Sneak Peak at Photoshop CS5

Sneak Peak at Photoshop CS5

Oct 15th in General by Jeffrey Way

Adobe is hard at work on the follow-up to their line of CS4 products. Just recently, they released a sneak-peak video of some of the experiments they're working on. Needless to say, it's incredible! It's almost time to start filling the coin jar.

Hi, I'm Jeff. I'm the editor of Nettuts+, and the Site Manager of Theme Forest. I spend too much time in front of the computer and find myself telling my fiance', "We'll go in 5 minutes!" far too often. I just can't go out to dinner while I'm still producing FireBug errors...drives me crazy. During my free time, I sporadically write articles for my own personal blog. If it will keep you in the good graces of the church, follow us on Twitter.

Though not specifically related to web development, the huge majority of us use Photoshop on a daily basis when designing - which makes this video more than applicable.

How Much Longer?

According to reports, the CS5 suite is expected to be released April 10, 2010.

I’m kinda annoyed by how fast adobe upgrades there products, don;t get me wrong, but they could let the consumer get to have some fun with the older version (old vs cs4?!?!).

Adobe always work on an 18-month product cycle.
Just because they are showing a few new featurs does not mean that CS5 is ready for release.

Budd, didn’t you hear? They’re most likely to release the darn thing next year April. Jerks! Leaving out features on purpose so they can cash in on our wallets.

      Nori Silverrage October 19th

Yeah me too. I bought CS3.3 and then they went and released CS4 a few months later. So that pissed me off.
Anyway, the 18month release cycle is too fast. They really don’t change too much in that time. I’d prefer a two or three year cycle where each release is more groundbreaking instead of one or two new tools each release. I mean they don’t even do much for updates on their products. CS3 when it was first released is the same as it is now, they have a couple of small bug fix patched but thats about it. Lets see a little more love for “old” versions.

It’s a double-edged sword Nori. I like a company that continues to improve their products, but wallet continues to say Ouch! (if it could). The one thing I’ve fallen victim to is I bought the CS3 Master Collection about six months before CS4 came out. Had I known this Adobe pattern for releases, I would have waited for CS4. What it did for me was cause problems taking classes at my college. I bought CS3 with the intent of taking about six classes. But the college went with the flow and changed their books and software the very next semester. So I’ve only taken two Photoshop classes and an Acrobat class.

The alternative is waiting on a company to put out a “good” updated product. It took Microsoft eight years to do that. I’m not bashing Microsoft – merely pointing out the obvious.

Me? I’m waiting for Windows 7 with SP1 to be around and then either wait or install CS5. It’s about time I reformatted my hard drive anyway – it’ll be more than two years when CS5 may come out next April.

        Good luck!

Is it just me or is Adobe just adding a few new features and relaunching a new version, charging hundreds in the process?

I realize that performance and a few other variables are in play that you don’t see in a program, but still. When it is that expensive…

(Yeah – you already know this :) ) But to use PS as a WYSIWYG Editor is kinda cool! It is good to give first impressions to your customers. And you can work on this css-rich html base to bring it into your cms real easy (You already know this too ;) )

New features are always welcome but I’m not spending another dime on an Adobe product until they really focus on the Mac version. Face it, what’s hurting Photoshop more: its lack of features, or its terrible performance and UI?

      Nori Silverrage October 19th

Terrible performance… I have a 2.5GB 3Ghz Dual Core processor and two dedicated hard drives and its still sluggish. Sure its not a super computer, but do I really need 8GBs of ram and a quad core processor with 10k drives? Until recently Photoshop didn’t even support 64bit OS so it couldn’t address more than 4GBs anyway.

I’ve been a photoshop user for a number of years, and while Adobe does continue to impress us with new features, I’m not sure this is worth the price of the upgrade. Realistically, how many times are you going to need to warp something as shown in the video? And the paint brushes… I’d never use them. My only reason to upgrade might be if I got a new O/S and my CS2 didn’t work anymore.

The new technology looks great. I’d especially like to try out the new brush tools with my Cintiq. It would be nice to see the cursor shape and size change on the fly based on what is actually being painted. Also, I hope they focus more on fixing the performance so it’s more like CS3. CS4 was a step backward in my opinion and I have nothing but problems with it.

Wow, cs4 has only been out 5 minutes, so is adobe expecting us to fork out hundreds of £/$ in upgrades or new software every year then???? if yes, then they need to review their pricing policy.

to be honest I would not mind paying a bit extra to get a new feature as addons/patches etc to an existing version, that way I could pick and choose whats useful to my workflow, but dishing out for a completely new piece of software for a handful of new features, is just smacking of profiteering by Adobe.

It is nothing really new to put a painting technology in it… BUT: It is wonderfull to use only one program and not switching from the slow Corel painter to PS and backwards.
There isnt any bad about the CS5 release. You dont have to buy it. But some people will welcome the new features.

I will buy it and you know what? I`m one of this person that would say: Dude this is awesome and easy. Then i will look on the price and will say: WOW!!! These are 10 products in one and if i would buy them instead of PS i would spend much more money on them.

I use PS as a texturizer for 3D Models, Photography, Matte Painting, scrabbles, web design, postworks etc. i can really use this 10 programs strong thing called Photoshop :) I`ve got CS2 and it was worth it. And this version would it be also…

I`m a designer and if i would use MSPaint – my customers would kick my bu** for the delayed outcome. But of course – why should i use a car if i could use a curricle :) It would be cheaper, better for the nature and i dont want to mention how individuell i would be.

It is decided! I will crash my equipment and use a greenscreen monitor with DOS. I`m a designer – so i dont have to use this fancy modern things :D Just me, my room-sized computer and my dot-matrix printer on my 56k modem. Hell yeah!

Is anyone curious how neither this video, it’s author’s Youtube profile, nor the website where it was published are actually connected with Adobe Systems? This is not the first video claiming CS5 features, nor the first created by fans that claim to be the next version of CS5.

From the “cs5.org” site where this was published:
“Blog devoted to the Adobe CS5 (Adobe Creative Suite 5). Provides a summary of the Adobe CS5 – related prerelease and experimental technologies
    Contact us: adobe2011(at)gmail.com”

Jeffrey, you state that “they released a sneak-peak video” but in fact, Adobe is in no way connected with this video, nor the others that have popped up claiming to expose new features of the future release. In order to maintain credibility at Nettuts+ I believe a small disclaimer is needed in the situation. Otherwise, your site simply falls into the category of other “hype-based” rumor sites, like those seen in the Apple community.

    Thoughts anyone?

Extreamly cool outcome though :) the new brush technique will help real life painters to switch to photoahop.

I always thought some features of After effects should included in photoshop. I think we got one here :) Nice worp tool.

i don’t like those brushes improvements, photoshop is for image editing not for painting. Painter has all those improvements right now, so thats not a new technology like they say. They must concentrate in what the program does (image editing) and don’t try to emulate another specialized programs that are far away in their capabilities just to gain some money with new version of the same shit. Like the inclusion of “3D”, lol thats crap, for 3d i use 3d max.

Just think about it, why they don’t try to include crappy things like “advanced” vector manipulation. Because they own a program that does exactly that (illustrator) and they know illustrator is much better doing what it was made for.

And yes that new stuff on image editing is amazing and useful. But they need to do like 10 more improvements like that to release a new version.

  73. Speaking from a training provider, it is hard to keep up with the names, not the technology as that does not change too much. But if we say we are teaching CS4 and everyone knows CS5 is out, we then look dated. This puts pressure on us to update for almost no reason than to say 5 instead of 4.

    Tough call.

I think you need a better picture, or maybe the guy who marks the football field needs more experience. this helps alot :)

Cool, but the updated brush engine probably still won’t come close to Corel Painter.

I’d like to see some simple additions that would make website mockups easier… like being able to change the radius of a rectangle. Or being able to add a line to separate sides of a rectangle, just like you can in CSS.

Sure, Adobe has Fireworks, and it has some awesome features for web mockups. But it still lacks in so many ways, that i always come back to Photoshop.

How many times does he say “TECHNOLOGY”? He’s like Steve Jobs and his “INCREDIBLE”.
    “Incredibly” irritating.

    Btw, CS5 seems very nice.

This seems insane. I’m worried that in the later days, there wouldn’t be any ‘real’ images anymore

Another “cash grab” by Adobe by offering some new features that look cool but in reality will make no difference to your working day. What about fixing all the errors in the current version of the software instead of slugging us for another release?

Stupid. All I care about is Adobe fixing bugs and making the Mac versions work correctly. Make it 64 bit. Ditch the ancient legacy code. Don’t really care about smearing paint.

“CS5″ looks too much like “CSS” in some fonts.

    Just sayin.

With everything Adobe puts out, they leave something broken that I used to use. It’s unfortunate that I rely on their products so much. I hate the arrogant company they have become.
