Sneak Peak at Photoshop CS5

Sneak Peak at Photoshop CS5

Adobe is hard at work on the follow-up to their line of CS4 products. Just recently, they released a sneak-peak video of some of the experiments they’re working on. Needless to say, it’s incredible! It’s almost time to start filling the coin jar.

Though not specifically related to web development, the huge majority of us use Photoshop on a daily basis when designing – which makes this video more than applicable.

How Much Longer?

According to reports, the CS5 suite is expected to be released April 10, 2010.

  1. Thanks for the update!

  2. Oh my god, if you thought they had put it all in in CS4, they still know to amaze us. I say good job Adobe.

  3. kevinsturf says:

OMG Freaking amazing features, thanks a lot Adobe.

    • I use PS as a texturizer for 3D Models, Photography, Matte Painting, scrabbles, web design, postworks etc. i can really use this 10 programs strong thing called Photoshop . I`ve got CS2 and it was worth it.

  4. I’m kinda annoyed by how fast adobe upgrades there products, don;t get me wrong, but they could let the consumer get to have some fun with the older version (old vs cs4?!?!).

    • DataMouse says:

Adobe always work on an 18-month product cycle.
Just because they are showing a few new featurs does not mean that CS5 is ready for release.

      • Subaru says:

Budd, didn’t you hear? They’re most likely to release the darn thing next year April. Jerks! Leaving out features on purpose so they can cash in on our wallets.

    • Nori Silverrage says:

Yeah me too. I bought CS3.3 and then they went and released CS4 a few months later. So that pissed me off.
Anyway, the 18month release cycle is too fast. They really don’t change too much in that time. I’d prefer a two or three year cycle where each release is more groundbreaking instead of one or two new tools each release. I mean they don’t even do much for updates on their products. CS3 when it was first released is the same as it is now, they have a couple of small bug fix patched but thats about it. Lets see a little more love for “old” versions.

      • Gil says:

It’s a double-edged sword Nori. I like a company that continues to improve their products, but wallet continues to say Ouch! (if it could). The one thing I’ve fallen victim to is I bought the CS3 Master Collection about six months before CS4 came out. Had I known this Adobe pattern for releases, I would have waited for CS4. What it did for me was cause problems taking classes at my college. I bought CS3 with the intent of taking about six classes. But the college went with the flow and changed their books and software the very next semester. So I’ve only taken two Photoshop classes and an Acrobat class.

The alternative is waiting on a company to put out a “good” updated product. It took Microsoft eight years to do that. I’m not bashing Microsoft – merely pointing out the obvious.

Me? I’m waiting for Windows 7 with SP1 to be around and then either wait or install CS5. It’s about time I reformatted my hard drive anyway – it’ll be more than two years when CS5 may come out next April.

        Good luck!

  5. Randy Cram says:

    I love it, looks amazing!

  6. Those are some cool features. They’re not exactly going to help me design web pages faster but they’re cool none the less.

  7. OH MY GOD… I did not even had the time to experiment CS4 and they are already getting CS5 out… Oh…. and I was thinking of starting to learn some other programs… yeah in my dreams :))

  8. sam says:

Nice. I believe a tool should not hinder a person’s creativity and Adobe are really pushing that..

  9. cssah says:

    Really amazing tools,Thx .

  10. Michele says:

    *eyes glaze over*
    Amazing. @__@

  11. Pretty cool, funny announcer voice sounds like an Knock-out Arena voice.

Is it just me or is Adobe just adding a few new features and relaunching a new version, charging hundreds in the process?

I realize that performance and a few other variables are in play that you don’t see in a program, but still. When it is that expensive…

    • Bretticus says:

I was thinking the same thing. This guy is a little over-dramatic.

      • Matt Hill says:

It’s Russell Brown! Famous PhotoShop guru and Senior Creative Director at Adobe. He’s the main man who for years has been bridging the gap between the users and PhotoShop developers and he does all PhotoShop’s preview videos. He’s famous for his “wacky” persona.

You don’t dis the Brown. ;-)

  12. w1sh says:

Thank God Adobe is finally coming out with “technology to enhance my performance”. And here I thought they were taking it away. Hey girls!

  13. UK Site Builder says:

Ahh I was wandering when they were going to incorporate the puppet tool from After Effects in PhotoShop

    Nice one!

  14. WOW, that warping tool is very cool!

  15. Devin says:

This looks really nice. I personally can’t wait to see what else they come up with.

    • Nori Silverrage says:

For CS5 I’m guessing this will be the extent of the new stuff. They don’t generally release a lot of new tools, usually just two or threeish and then some interface and backend changes.

  16. Viggo says:

I wish I could get excited about Corel painter functionality and the puppet tool that’s been in After Effects since CS3.

Adobe had best work up something new and significant .

  17. BroOf says:

It looks so amazing! I hope there will be also web additions :D

  18. Eric B. says:

Haha! At first, I thought that the title said “Photoshop CSS”. That would be very interesting if Photoshop generated your CSS for you!

    • Nio says:

      hehe I don’t want crappy generated CSS…

      • Stefan Frank says:

Oh there it is this software called sitegrinder that makes css from your PS works if you describe it how to use the layer. It didnt make sense for real pictures. (Yeah – you already know this :) ) But to use PS as a WYSIWYG Editor is kinda cool! It is good to give first impressions to your customers. And you can work on this css-rich html base to bring it into your cms real easy (You already know this too ;) )

  19. Tanish says:

Excellent as usual. Nothing can beat the Photoshop (yet).
I use both Gimp AND Photoshop these days.

I do wish Photoshop goes Opensource
    :P

  20. Louf Hawkner says:

I thought the Adobe team were hard at work threatening businesses with trademark notices years after they became aware of their existence, which is technically illegal

    • Nori Silverrage says:

Thats just the copyright infringement division which has 1000 employees. The developer division spends all their time developing with their 10 employees.

  21. Puja Puri says:

The voice-over was quite annoying with constant repetition of ‘this technology’… Tools look promising though…

  22. sacarias says:

it really would be nice to get program patches instead of having to purchase the whole new thing.

  23. Ben says:

Awesome! I love the new warping stuff. And for the painting.. i wish i’d have a graphic tablet. :(

  24. Nokadota says:

The guy speaking was so unbelievably corny but the new technology seems neat.

  25. paul says:

kinda impressed, but not really…that joker presenting spoiled it….

  26. Dan Philibin says:

New features are always welcome but I’m not spending another dime on an Adobe product until they really focus on the Mac version. Face it, what’s hurting Photoshop more: its lack of features, or its terrible performance and UI?

    • Nori Silverrage says:

Terrible performance… I have a 2.5GB 3Ghz Dual Core processor and two dedicated hard drives and its still sluggish. Sure its not a super computer, but do I really need 8GBs of ram and a quad core processor with 10k drives? Until recently Photoshop didn’t even support 64bit OS so it couldn’t address more than 4GBs anyway.

  27. Alan Monroig says:

Great, I can´t wait any more!!

  28. I’ve been a photoshop user for a number of years, and while Adobe does continue to impress us with new features, I’m not sure this is worth the price of the upgrade. Realistically, how many times are you going to need to warp something as shown in the video? And the paint brushes… I’d never use them. My only reason to upgrade might be if I got a new O/S and my CS2 didn’t work anymore.

  29. arnold says:

    CS5 is looking great!,
    how old is CS4? lol

  30. The new technology looks great. I’d especially like to try out the new brush tools with my Cintiq. It would be nice to see the cursor shape and size change on the fly based on what is actually being painted. Also, I hope they focus more on fixing the performance so it’s more like CS3. CS4 was a step backward in my opinion and I have nothing but problems with it.

  31. DaveK says:

Wow, cs4 has only been out 5 minutes, so is adobe expecting us to fork out hundreds of £/$ in upgrades or new software every year then???? if yes, then they need to review their pricing policy.

to be honest I would not mind paying a bit extra to get a new feature as addons/patches etc to an existing version, that way I could pick and choose whats useful to my workflow, but dishing out for a completely new piece of software for a handful of new features, is just smacking of profiteering by Adobe.

  32. Tanja says:

Argh! Damn you Adobe and your awesome software… I’m also kinda annoyed at how fast they’re developing the new versions. You get the feeling that you shouldn’t buy the new versions, because the next ones will be out a month after -.-
But hey, if it’s this great, why complain?

  33. “Don’t try to be original. Just try to be good” – Paul Rand… and Adobe products are neither. — As already mentioned, the puppet tool from After effects since CS2… and as far as a realistic painting tool, check out ‘Art Rage’ http://www.artrage.com , they’ve been doing this since 2004…

  34. Vishu says:

WOW!…these glimpses sure look promising, i hope there’s something related to aiding the web design as well in the upcoming CS5 suite…

  35. Nio says:

    Sorry but I disagree…

All these “new” stuff are making the Adobe Products just for everyone. Like chinese products, but with greater price.

The people will say, “wow it is so easy to make such things, why you want such price for something soooo easy?”

Just Adobe guys with their wish to make all the things so “technology advanced” are starting to create mediocre products.

I will stay with CS4. It is enough.

If you are designer, you will make it even with MS Paint.

  36. Stoian Kirov says:

    Unbelievable !!! :)
    I can’t wait… :>

  37. squareart says:

    Wow Cool!
I think the patches update idea is a good one, hint hint: )

  38. OMG! insane! PS5 very awesome

  39. Will the bugs from cs3 and cs4 be passed over to cs5 again?

  40. Aqib Mushtaq says:

    looks amazing, can’t wait!

  41. Goodies says:

    WOW.
the painting and Warping stuff looks like some crazy stuff.
    its just AMAZING

i can only hope they put that Warping Technology into flash. :D

  42. Gerard Cahill says:

Cool stuff but god where do they get these narrators? Feels like i’m at Disneyland. Also The word “technology” has lost all meaning.

  43. MrSuitUp says:

    That amazed!
Especially the warping feature, I have ideas of putting that to use… =))

  44. Hieronymus_N says:

Will it run in 64-bit on my Mac under Snow Leopard and not crash all the time like CS3. That’s all I care about. Paint shmaint.

  45. Marshall says:

These releases remind me of touring bands. They’ll release an album roughly 12-18 months at a time so they can supplement the expenses.

I could see Adobe coming out with the CS4.5 EP to support their next full length.

  46. Philo says:

    Looks Awesome! :)

  47. Tim says:

What tosh! I’m not made of money. Can’t see me upgrading for a few new features.

Anyway, I only upgrade when I visit the US due to the price variations around the world. Why should it be more expensive if I download it using a UK credit card? Is that a con or what?
