Nettuts+ Quiz #9: The Absolute Basics of PHP

Nettuts+ Quiz #9: The Absolute Basics of PHP

This entry is part 9 of 12 in the The Official Nettuts+ Quizzes Session
« PreviousNext »

In 2012, we plan to take our quizzes to a whole new level with ones aimed at all languages and catering to all competencies and tastes. But what better language to start off the new year than PHP, the darling of the masses?

In this test, aimed at beginners, your knowledge of the absolute basics of PHP will be tested. Yes, we know PHP is a bit old school but it still powers a massive portion of the web and is a force to be reckoned with. And don’t get complacent with the difficulty level of this test either! More difficult ones are on the way — we just like to take it nice and slow. Or maybe we like lulling you into a false sense of security…

    Slight confusion on Q#2. If ‘regular HTML code’ means the file’s extension is .html (or equivalent) then the answer would be different.

    $221BakerStreet is no good apparently? Can’t start a variable with numbers – is that what it is?

    • Gastón

      Yes, it is. It happen with almost all programming languages.

      • uvegla

        If I am correct, you cant do it syntactically. But check this piece of code:

        $name = ’221BakerStreet’;

        ${$name} = ‘It works!’;

        var_dump(${$name});

        echo ‘&ltpre&gt’;
        print_r(get_defined_vars());
        echo ‘&lt/pre&gt’;

  • http://redhat.al kal

    100% great quiz!

  • [rb]

    I would have got 100% except for “Are PHP short tags considered good, standard practice?” which I new your quiz would consider false but this is a stupid question as it is a matter of preference and environment.

    Short tags are considered bad on archaic environments but that for the most part has been surpassed.
    I have never used an environment that didn’t support short tags and its easy enough to turn on.

    This question is entirely preferential and can neither be true or false.

    • http://www.dreu.info Robert-Jan de Dreu

      Yep I failed on this one question too. PHP short tags to a valid way to open PHP AFAIK. PHP even decided against removing them from PHP so I don’t understand why people think that it is bad practice.

  • http://www.developnew.com Bali

    88.4%….cool questions..

  • Valentin

    Never programmed at all :)) 52.94%

  • Nico

    That second Question is so missleading :( Depends on Serverconfiguration. And is regulat HTML Code a html file or just Hthml Code in a php file?^^

    Else i got 100%

  • logudotcom

    I scored 88.24 .. Great

  • http://drewsymo.com Drew

    Question 2 is a little undefined, you can’t embed PHP into a .html document, only a .php.

  • http://kwiius.com Jamie McC

    Seems strange to me to have two questions about case-sensitive variables… I nearly got the second one wrong (other than that, 100%!)

  • http://www.iam420.in vivek
