In Need of Tutorial Writers

$500 For Your Tutorial!

Hi, everyone. As most of you know, we recently launched our new Plus service — which supplies members with exclusive tutorials and screencasts each month. Due to the fact that these tutorials must be of a much higher quality and include a respective screencast, we offer our authors $300+ compensation, depending on the tutorial’s uniqueness and complexity. However, I’m willing to offer the authors of the next two accepted Plus tutorials $500 each!

What Do I Write About?

Unfortunately, we can’t post on a wide range of platforms for this service. If we did, very few tutorials would be relevant to our readers. Instead, we focus exclusively on HTML/CSS, PHP, and JavaScript/jQuery. As for the topic, we expect our authors to present ideas which will prove to be popular with our audience. It could be an in depth step-by-step style of tutorial, or even a series of screencasts (i.e. “WordPress: Beginner to Master”, or “CodeIgniter Essentials”). The two series referenced have already been posted/scheduled; however, you’re free to submit a series on a different subject! If you choose to do so, make sure that you divide the series into 5+ lessons so that the reader/watcher may easily choose the appropriate video.

What Files Should I Submit?

We require three things with each submission.

  1. Written tutorial plus plenty of images, formatted as HTML.
  2. Working demo, zipped.
  3. Screencast, recorded at 1024×768, saved as a .mov file. If you’ve never created a screencast before, don’t worry; it’s much easier than you’d think! Refer here for instructions.

Is the Competition too High?

Absolutely not. Always remember, everyone thinks that. As a result, very few people actually submit their finished tutorials. If you write and explain yourself well, your chances are very high!

        I review the majority of submissions once per week (usually Mondays). I have a bunch to go through today.

    I’ve been thinking on doing a screencast from one of the text tutorials (like the CodeIgniter File Sharing tut or something) but then again, I doubt that’d get accepted haha due to the fact that it’s already there as text.

    Jeff,

    If I write a series, let’s say 4 – 5 articles to create a CMS. Would that be considered 1 article or 4-5 articles?

      It really depends. If it’s for the Plus service, it would be considered one submission.

      Sure. A 45 minute screencast is perfect. Even 20-30 minutes is fine!

    Another question: is it possible to record in HDready resolution (1280×720)? Or is 1024×768 strict requrement. 1024×768 isn’t much space for work, even if I use Camtasia’s Studio dynamic zoom functions.

    Are you still only paying through Paypal? I submitted a tutorial a while back but had issues because Paypal doesn’t support sending money to users in South Africa.

    Was a bit disappointed with that – I’d definitely write more otherwise…

    Hi Jeff,

    I see that there is a big interest in creating screencasts.

    If you haven’t done so already, I really think you should create some kiind of convention or minimum requirements to people who plan to create screencasts.
    resolution?
    encoding?
    language?
    length?
    etc..

      For normal tutorials the payment is 150$. This “promotion” is just for plus tutorials.

    How about anti articles? I have written one one breaking CAPTCHA’s to show why I think they are not the answer to spam and why you shouldn’t roll your own because generally they can be cracked pretty easily.

    Have you thought of asking the user what would be of interest to them, for instance…I’d love intermediate PHP and how to do a CMS.
    A tip for those writing Tuts…dont just think out loud as you code add examples and analogies to the mix it usually helps, consider us, the Designers ;)

    Please make MoneyBooker available
    Paypal + Moneybooker = one payment system, because people in third world countries don’t have access to paypal and then may use illegal “Paypal”, something I don’t like and make me not very enthusiastic for writing. Moneybooker is the solution in that case.

    Moneybookers support credit cards, you can charge the account with your CC, it’s simple and easy, but hey you can’t “Charge Back”, thus you may pay later until you verified the article.

    Finally, adding MoneyBooker is a MUST!
