Decoding HTML5: My New Book

Decoding HTML5: My New Book

Hey guys! I have a few fun things to announce. After months of work, my new book, Decoding HTML5, is finally available. Even better, though, I’ve managed to work out a special arrangement with Rockable Press to offer much, much more.

The Book - $19

Decoding HTML5

Toying with new JavaScript APIs is like Christmas for me!

Toying with new JavaScript APIs is like Christmas for me! So when I set out to write this book, I had one goal in mind: decipher that incredibly confusing spec into something that any John Q. designer or developer can understand. It’s what I wish I had in the beginning.

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “I wish there was somebody who could sit next to me and make me understand this code…because I don’t!” I’ve been in that position countless times.

Well, if you can relate, I think this book just might do the trick. Rather than using high level jargon that no beginner could possibly understand, I’ve done my best to break these complicated concepts into chunks that everyone can grasp.

I cover everything from the new semantic elements, to form enhancements, to a variety of the new JavaScript APIs, such as web workers, web storage, and geolocation.

Now Available: $19

HTML5 Fundamentals

In addition to the book, I’ve also released my latest Tuts+ Premium course, called “HTML5 Fundamentals.

HTML5 Fundamentals Screencast Course

Split into two chunks, this first course – geared specifically for those of you who prefer visual training – will get you up and running with HTML5 in no time. It’s the perfect companion to Decoding HTML5. The follow-up, “Advanced HTML5,” is scheduled for May-June.

A Special Arrangement

I’m very excited to announce that I was able to work out a special arrangement with Rockable Press.

Beginning today, Decoding HTML5 has already been added to the Tuts+ Premium library.

For those unfamiliar, Tuts+ Premium provides top-notch education in the creative fields. You might be familiar with the massively popular (and free) “30 Days To Learn jQuery“? That was part of Tuts+ Premium, and there are countless more courses and ebooks on the site just like it. A monthly membership to the site is $19.

So what this means is that you have two choices, if you’d like to pick this book up:

Overall, I really hope you enjoy the book!

Though a couple reference to Leroy Jenkins, Clueless, and Total Recall might make an appearance. I’m not really at liberty to discuss that though.

      Greate job Jeffrey!

Not so much a Book as an actual eBook. I quite it quite annoying that there’s no mention of the fact it’s not an actual printed book in this post.

I believe you should update your promotion to reflect it’s an eBook not a book. The definition of ‘book’ is that it’s of written or printed work on pages glued or sewn together.

Pretty sure there will be a written version available through Amazon soon.

If you find something like that annoying…I worry. Maybe take an aspirin. The world is rapidly moving toward digital books.

      • Annonymous

Will keep my eyes peeling on Amazon. It’s not so much the fact it’s not available as a book, it’s more I got all excited after seeing the tweet only to find out it’s an eBook when trying to buy it.

Personally I hate eBooks, and I’ve tried and tried to read them, but it just doesn’t work on me. I have learning difficulties which especially affects my reading so sadly no matter how much I want to read it, I simply can’t

      • dj

Jeff… I think you misunderstood “anonymous”. What I saw that he was annoyed with (and in my opinion doesn’t at all need an aspirin) wasn’t that it was an ebook; but, that nowhere in your promo did you mention that what Envato was selling currently (the one for which you were asking $19) was an eBook as opposed to print edition. It may have merely been an oversight but it’s what internet buyers have learned to expect from ads and I can see why he pointed it out to you and would think you’d be grateful not worried.

I can see that you answered another commenter who had a similar question with a link to sample pages; and from them I see that your book has about 350 pages in 16 chapters and a smattering of color diagrams and code – all additional things to point out in promo paragraphs. (Not a single Beiber reference that I could see in the sample pages, and a full color photo of the author to boot).

And, I agree that you can say eBooks are much more prevalent in number now; however, don’t believe you can assume that people are actually preferring them over “print” for “how to” books like yours. I personally find eBooks impractical to use when you are trying to follow along with examples by programming on your computer (I don’t have fancy two screens). So while we all in our house use our Nooks to read novels and stories; we prefer to buy actual print for these kind of things – and the only aspirin we take is what they recommend for “healthy heart” issues. What will be the “real” print cost vs the eBook?

Read this article yesterday, thinking now would be a great time to get a premium membership.
Just woke up today, after a night out, reading the article again.
Comparing where I got most of my moneys worth: Lots of great tutorials, articles and eBooks, for less than $20, or a headache for about 3 times the amount.

It suddenly became very clear to me: I’m getting a Tuts+ Premium membership!

Thanks for all the great content, and keep up the good work!

  • Artur Rychlewicz

Hi, Jeffrey, I have one question. I saw it in “30 Days to Learn HTML and CSS” course. When you use Sublime Text and, for example, you write and you want write href inside a tag you have a tip with href and other attributes. I have ST for my notebook with Windows (and yes, I wanna Macbook) i haven’t that tips. It is anywhere in settings? Thanks.
