Once that’s done they can then re-download their new version of the book.

If you don’t have a copy of the eBook yet don’t worry! Rockable is also offering a $10 Discount Voucher for all those who don’t have the book yet!

    Cool, thx for the update!

But… I clicked on the link, but no new email?

    • http://www.twitter.com/anttti Antti

Me too… I bought the book when it was first released, now clicked the link in my order confirmation mail (where I initially downloaded the book), but nothing happened. More details please?

  • Antony

Yeah, thanks for the update, but experiencing the same problem as ThaClown.

Clicked on the link provided in my first email back in Jan 2009 (when I first purchased the book), taken to http://www.fatfreecart.com and given a Transaction ID etc. and assured an email would be sent to my address, but no email yet to let me download the revised version.

    What now?

Clicked on the original link in my email and takes me to a new page saying:

An email will be sent to you with a link to your purchases. But I don’t see any reactivate link. Need help. E-mail id that the ebook was sent to is sonaliaagrawal@yahoo.com

  • David

Dont have my original email.. what should I do?

  • http://www.zallaza.com Razil

    Cool!

Envato, I think you need to check the email link to the page, one of the link is broken. It linked me to a page not found.

But I’ve waited for quite sometime for the updates. Oh, and thanks for the discount given to us who have bought the previous edition.

  • http://troychaplin.com Troy

I also do not have the original email, and I don’t see any information about this on the Rockable Press site… What do individuals like myself do to get our updated copy??

  • http://michaelkral.com Michael Kral

I’ve been wanting to buy this book but hesitating due to the new 3.0 release. Just bought the book, can’t wait to learn WordPress theming.

Thanks Envato team for the discount code!

Same problem here – has anyone heard any kind of followup about this?

  • http://www.lonelyschnozz.com Tyron

I’m having the same problem as everyone else. Clicked on the link in my original purchase email and was given a reference number, but no promised follow up email was send to me:(

Perhaps this announcement was a bit premature?

  • Wouter

I purchased the book like a week ago, glad to see the update is for free, almost kicked myself.

    Keep up the good work!

This is definitely something I could use, but any chance this will be available in the paperback version?

Hey Guys … Is there any problem with my comment .. Why it is still awaiting moderation.

  • Marcin

I was not surprised when it turned out I had the same problem as everyone else – I clicked the original link, but I’ve received no new email with a new download link so far.

Remembering the issues with some of your last releases (when it was not possible to download the screencast accompanying a Jeff’s book on web development), maybe you should put some more attention to details?

  • theD

Same as everyone else. Sent an email to their support team. Hopefully they respond unlike in the comments here.

  • Antony

Well finally got the issue resolved by emailing info@rockablepress.com. They sent me a special Discount Code to get the updated book for free. Got my revised edition.

Still I don’t know why Rockable Press (Envato) didn’t send me a courtesy email as a previous customer notifying me of the revised edition of the book with the necessary link to the revised book download. I mean if I had not come across this post on nettuts.com I might have missed the fact that a revised edition was out there.

I mean Chris Coyier and Jeff Starr have sent me emails notifying me of the updates to their book (Digging into WordPress), with the appropriate link to the download. I didn’t have to visit their site to learn that their was a revised edition.

Anyway just something you folks may want to consider.

    • Marcin

I was surprised by the lack of email notification too. I am sure a number of people will miss this update. And still, no response from the RP team to the questions asked in this thread (how to actually get the update).

  • http://www.dharmakelleher.com Dharma Kelleher

I got the current version and was surprised by how many out-of-date references in the text there are, such as referring to WP 2.7 as the latest version or referring to IE6 and 7 as major browsers with no mention of Chrome. How thoroughly did the authors go through the manuscript to reflect the changes to WordPress from 2.7 and MU to 3.0?

  • http://www.dharmakelleher.com Dharma Kelleher

Also, I was disappointed by the lack of bookmarks. It’s a 300+ page PDF. How hard is it to put in bookmarks for chapters? Unfortunately, due to the DRM protections, I can’t add my own bookmarks to make navigating easier.

    • http://www.infrasoundkids.com L1

I noticed this as well, It’s annoying. And the references are out of date. It’s also a bit annoying when it says “place this code in” but doesn’t say where to place it.

  • http://www.twitter.com/anttti Antti

I finally received my copy too, but only after sending an email to info@rockablepress.com (as Anthony pointed earlier). Got the discount coupon, now have the new edition.

    Cheers!

Having the same issue, the link doesn’t work for me. Sent an email to Envato and the support person asked me for the PayPal transaction ID which I no longer have access to. Said they can’t do anything if I don’t know the PP transaction ID. That doesn’t really make sense to me since I gave them the email address I used for the purchase, I still have the original email with the link, etc. What do I need to do to get the updated copy without paying twice? I offered to forward them my original email as proof of purchase but haven’t heard back. Any ideas Drew?

  • Spartacus

    Hi there,

I’m skimming through the update just now, I don’t have the original PDF here in work but I’m seeing numerous references to 2.7 and then on page 138 it talks about the default Kubrick theme instead of TwentyTen.

I still think this is a great title and the template files are great to have as well. It just has a feeling of having been rushed out for 3.0.

An additional chapter with info on hosting and theming multiple WP sites or something would have made this a really worthwhile purchase.

    Cheers.

    • http://www.dharmakelleher.com Dharma Kelleher

My thoughts exactly. Aside from the section on custom menus, I don’t see anything about the innovations in WP 3.0. Certainly nothing on how WP3.0 is now using HTML5. Both the writers and editors were asleep at the wheel on this “not so revised” edition of the book. Time to wake up and smell the Javascript, folks.

  • http://www.cwtchd.com/ Cwtchd

Paid for the book yesterday; received the first email claiming that I would receive a second with a link “shortly”, 24 hours later – no second email. I have raised tickets, I have emailed, I have mentioned on Twitter, yet no response.

I have my PayPal receipts, I have supplied that information in my email and tickets.

In the past, I have purchased other books and downloads online from other companies without any delay.

As a first time customer I can’t say that I am impressed by this massive delay and lack of response; actually, I am beginning to suspect that I have been ripped off and wondering if I need to contact PayPal to get my money back.

Pity, as I was really looking forward to reading the book and perhaps buying Premium membership, but I can’t say I trust a company that ignores support requests and doesn’t supply what I pay for!

    • http://www.cwtchd.com/ Cwtchd

Although it took far too long for it to be resolved, this issue has thankfully been dealt with now.

  • http://www.ulrichdesign.ca Travis Ulrich

Purchased. I took the PDF to a printshop to make a nice booklet for myself to work with. Can’t wait to get started! :)

  • http://www.milomade.co.uk Evie Milo

I’m a bit p***ed off that I got the newsletter from Envato today [28th] saying I could head over to NetTuts+ to get a discount code to find that it expired two days ago on the 26th! Why send outdated infromation in a newsletter – that’s pretty lame.

I was thinking of buying the book but after reading some of the comments here, I’m now in the ‘thinking about it’ mode and may stay there for a while.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

That was probably just a mistake. I’m sure they’ll fix that.

  • Lisa

The Envato email arrived this morning (July 28). I would like to purchase the ebook and would also like to take advantage of the 10% discount. Unfortunately the discount expired July 26. What’s up with that?

    • http://williamsmarketingdesign.com/ Emily

      Ditto! :-(

  • Rosemary

I noticed in the sample pdf and also in comments here that the book has not been fully revised to 3.0 (references to 2.7, no reference to twenty-ten, etc.)

Is it possible to know if the book will be revised again in the near future?

I didn’t buy the previous version. I received an email today 7/28 that contains a link to a $10 discount coupon which expired on 7/26! Doesn’t give me much confidence in the organization that produced it…

    Thank you.

  • Damian

Nearly paid full whack for it but after reading the latest comments – I’ll think I’ll sit on the fence for a bit.

I’m a WordPress amateur but was after something that explained what’s in 3.0.

  • http://www.lonelyschnozz.com Tyron

Hey, to all the peeps apprehensive about purchasing this book, I’d highly recommend it. This is the book that taught me most of what I know about designing for WP and it’s very well written.

If you are having any problems like a lot of people have experienced with this update, I suggest emailing Rockable, they are very helpful.

  • Jeff

I have purchased the first ebook and have been going through some of the tutorials but I have noticed a few typos and a few things that are not very clear and I had to “bridge the gap” myself.

Overall, I am happy but I also feel that this may have been rushed a little too soon and should have been proofread a few more times to make sure it is clear and the code structure is solid. It is not too much of an issue if you have some experience with themes but it you don’t…….oops!

  • http://organic-web.net David

I got this so called “revised version” too but the code is so diffrent from WP version 3 that i think they should not be labeling this as a wordpress 3 book this they need to revise this again. it’s a shame as i was looking forward to getting to grips with wp 3 theming. in the mean time could anybody recomend a book that is actully about themeing in wp 3.

    p.s. i like this site ..

    • http://organic-web.net David

just noticed i cant spell today Sorry :(

  • David

has any body tried to follow the code and get it working in wordpress 3 ???

    • http://N/A Surya Osborne

Hello, I have tried to follow the instructions. I’ve managed to get to chapter 5. Then it all goes wrong because of the vagaries of the writing. I’m unsure which functions.php file to change. This is because they say use the creatif site files, but when you open them up they already have the tutorial code included.

I’m stuck and trying to use other tutorials on the internet to solve the problems, but the problems seem to be specific to the tasks in hand, plus I lack the knowledge to adapt tutorials, so it’s less how to be a rockstar, more how to be a popstar wordpress breaker. I can now break any theme you give me, and in record time….

I want to love WordPress I really do……….

  • Nebbercracker

Has the book been updated to remove the typos and correct the errors yet?

  • http://www.justsomediahouse.co.uk Surya Osborne

Bought the book, turns out some of the code doesn’t work, there are spelling and grammar mistakes throughout. I am having particular problems following the wp_nav_menus section in chapter 4/5. It just doesn’t work.

I’ve seen a comment which states that the book shouldn’t be called WordPress 3.0. I’m new to this and the book, far from making me love WordPress, is making me hate it. Also I have tried to send Collis Ta’eed and friends but no reply.

Bit of a let down really, since Rockable has such a strong brand.

  • http://wordpress-tech.info/ Wordpress Tut

    Many people lost the email.
    Me too.
What can we do in this matter?

    We need this book.

    Any idea?

  • http://n/a Travis

I agree with Surya Osborne. I have same exact problems as him. I made it to chapter 5 and the examples either do not work or are unclear on where exactly to edit/change stuff. The wp_nav_menus section just does not work for me either. Ive given up trying to guess stuff with this book. Please rewrite the book with easy to follow instructions and not have to do any guess work. Ive given up on this book any one else recommend any good books to get started where the instructions don’t make you guess what to do?

  • Amie

Hell, I haven’t been able to get past Chapter3 on the HTML part because of lack of clarity! I have the 2010 revised version.

What I don’t like about the book is that when the author wrote the code for each part of the tutorial he did not clarify exactly where to place the code, and at the end of the HTML part the author should have reinstated the ENTIRE code in a few pages just so that it is easier to recheck in case something was missed, instead of making the reader have to go through page by page back into the entire chapter.

I also found many errors on the 2010 revised edition (thus far on Chapter3). Sometimes, the author’s code will not match the subsequent pages. Example: He declared a div for the mini portfolio section named:

on page 75, but changed the name to on page 88.

This can get confusing. I understand that it is not an HTML book for beginners and I am not a beginner. I am revisiting HTML after not touching it for an entire year.

I did not find the HTML sample file helpful because the code did not match the PDF book at all!

  • Al

I’ve a tendency to agree with a lot of the above posts in that elements of the tutorials are confusing and appear to either skip stages or instruct the reader to do something and then go and test the result when the tutorial instructions haven’t set up the necessary steps/parameters for the ‘result’ to work.

An example of the above appears to be in the wp_nav_menus section in chapter 4/5, where we are told to put code into the header.php file, add some pages etc and then view our new menu in all its glory…..
However, at this stage in the tutorial, we’re dealing with an index.php that has had all the code inside it replaced with the original index.html code and no call has been made to include header.php – so obviously no wp_nav_menu is going to show up! Maybe I’ve missed something here, but I don’t think so.

Also disappointed to set up the Recent Posts section (I just skipped the wp_nav_menu bit) which comes complete with instructions to include an if statement that checks that any posts matching the ID of the Featured Post don’t show up in Recent Posts. However, after completing the steps, there appears to be errors in the code because not only does the Featured Post show up in Recent Posts, there’s also this bit of stray code on the previewed WP page above all the Recent Posts (ID != $featured_ID) { ?> ). Because I was convinced I was doing something wrong, I installed the ‘finished’ theme that ships with the book to double check, however the exact same error is present in that theme!

Don’t like to moan, but in a re-revised issue of a book written by a company like Envato….well….it’s a bit sloppy. I’m sure I’ll learn some good tips and and techniques by continuing reading, but I kind of doubt that I’ll be a Rockstar WordPress Theme Designer by the end of it. Maybe a Busking one…… :P

    • Joshua Richards

Same problems as the guy above. The errors are persistent throughout. Is someone going to fix this? I want to be a Rockstar WordPress designer!

      Thanks!

      Solved it:

instead of <? if ($posts… etc., and

      replace with

      <?php if ($posts… etc., and

For the nav, menu section, the author implied he created a functions.php which was never created. This update was poorly put together, to “fix” that:

    1. create a functions.php file
    2. paste the following

    3. save
    4. go to Appearance > Menu
    5. Create a new menu and save
    6. The select menu for this theme will show up
