Introducing “Regular Expressions: Up and Running”

Tutorial Details

Regular expressions are easily one of the (initially) scariest aspects of programming. Particularly at the beginning, when you haven’t learned a single symbol, a large regular expression chunk can serve to be an incredibly intimidating force.

However, once you dig in and learn a handful of the symbols and sequences, you’ll quickly find that it’s not so bad. Truly learning regular expressions was one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made in my development career. I’d like to pass this learning on to you in my brand new Tuts+ Premium course, Regular Expressions: Up and Running.”

Overview

As always, we start at the beginning, and slowly work our way up to more advanced regular expression patterns and techniques. So, if they currently look like Egyptian hieroglyphs to you, no worries, they did for me too! When you’re finished with this course, though, you’ll have a solid grasp of the language, and a fantastic new tool to use in your projects.

Tuts+ Premium

The recently re-launched Tuts+ Premium is a service that provides top-tier training in a variety of creative fields. Whether you prefer books, visual training, or in depth tutorials, we have you covered. While we unfortunately can’t afford to provide the service for free, it’s only $19 a month – less than you’d spend on dinner.

I hope you’ll consider checking it out! In addition to learning a huge variety of new skills, it’s also a fantastic way to say thank you to Nettuts+.

Nice one, just in time. I have on college whole course about regular expressions and this will come in handy since I didn’t catch some things there. As always you make my day Jeffrey! Great work.

fantastic! i’ve been meaning to learn RegEx for a while.
Jeffrey, for tuts+ premium members, is there an option to download all videos for the cours, or do I have to download one by one?

nice blog. Happy new year to everyone from Italy!

  • Avelansh

I’ll check this course out for the sake of Jeffrey being the author(cos I like the way he teaches) although that I’ve already gone through the one published on lynda.com presented by Kevin Skoglund wich was really good course too.

Wish they weren’t $19/mo. How about I give you a nickel and you just give me a subtle smirk?!?! /inlivingcolor

Seriously though, I wish Tuts Premium was broken up into $5/Tuts site. For instance, I’d pay $5/mo for Nettuts, but I have absolutely no reason to ever want ActiveTuts or PhotoTuts, so why should I have to pay $14/mo for things I’ll never ever use?

I know for the “price of a pizza” and blah blah blah, but some of us are ridiculously poor – like… ridiculously poor… We’re not all ThemeForest millionaires and scoff at a $19/mo bill.

Anyway, like I said, I’d gladly pay $5/mo for NetTut’s Premium content, but until someone at Envato decides that’s a good way to evolve (which I doubt will ever happen) I’ll just do without.

Looks great though. Let me know if it comes out on the Marketplace for a reasonable price.

For everyone who can’t afford Premium but wants to learn regex from the master himself, here’s a 5-part series on regex: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/php/regular-expressions-for-dummies-screencast-series/

And here’s a great tool to test out your regex from the comfort of your browser: http://gskinner.com/RegExr/

I didn’t realize there were so many free “sample” screencasts in these courses. Niiiice. :)

  • Mexx

I recognize JEFFRAY-WAY-ARTICLE from the headline in Google reader. No one formulates them so appealing. Its incredible.

  • Matanya

Great tut! You made it so simple to understand.
Please note that the last video of chapter 5 (“Callback Functions for a RegEx”) isn’t the right one (it repeats one of the earlier screencasts). Would be great if you could replace it.

    could be useful

Great post, Jeffrey! Speaking as a (semi) new developer myself, I’ve definitely had a hard time wrapping my head around regular expressions.

I used to go all ‘WTF???’ at sighting a piece of code containing regex when I knew nothing about regular expressions.
Now thankfully I have some command over them,
    thanks for this tutorial

If you can’t afford to pay $19/mo for Tuts+ Premium, then you need to buy a Tuts Premium membership even that much more.

A step-by-step RegEx tutorial by someone who has become an excellent screencast teacher… to me this alone is worth $19.00.

Do you know how many times over the last year I have said to myself “I really need to dig in and learn these damn regular expressions better”? Realistically, probably 150 times. In one night I probably quadrupled my knowledge, and the next time I have a moment to sit down and flesh out some code, I’ll probably solidify a pretty solid practical understanding of Regular Expressions.

This is the perfect kind of tutorial. Take a subject that really isn’t very difficult, but is mired in confusion due to its scary-looking syntax and a paucity of plainly-spoken translations across the web, pass it to Jeffery Way, and you have yourself a gem.

Very little idea acquire from this.

This tempts me even more to become a ‘Premium Member’ !
    same also to me

Along the lines of what Brian mentioned…Has Envato put any thought or discussion into selling courses individually? I convinced our small agency to spring for the Tuts+ Premium account before the upgrade and anticipate it being a harder sell with the new monthly rate, but some of these courses would be really helpful to purchase for the team… just my two cents. Thanks for everything!

Hey Nick – Currently, we’re sticking with the monthly plan. That said, there’s nothing keeping you from signing up, downloading each course lesson, and then canceling. Not recommending it — but is an option. :)
