Language Wars: Sign Up

Hey, guys! I’m launching a new series on Nettuts+ soon, and I need your help! The series is called “Language Wars,” and will provide two developers — who have differing views on a particular subject — with a pedestal to speak their peace.

If this sounds like fun, and you’d like to make some extra money, sign up in the comments!

I Don’t Get It

Okay, for example, the first entry, “jQuery vs. MooTools” will feature a die-hard fan from each camp. They’ll then have the opportunity to answer a handful of questions, and illustrate why they prefer one library over the other. Future postings could spotlight “CodeIgniter vs. Kohana,” “PHP vs. Ruby,” etc.

How Do I Submit?

There are a handful of rules and requirements that must be met, in order to be selected to represent your “team.”

  1. This is all in good fun. We’re not looking for mean-spirited, heated debates. Respect is key.
  2. In exchange for your opinions, each participant (2 per entry) will receive $100. Your name and company will also be promoted on the posting, if you wish.
  3. You must be relatively well established in your field. This should come in the form of at least 5 years of real-word experience with that particular language or framework. Please don’t apply within the comments unless you genuinely feel that you have a high-level understanding of the concepts and reasoning behind your choice.
  4. No winner will be declared. This isn’t about that; it’s simply a fun way to discuss your opinion.

Upcoming Episodes

  • jQuery vs. Mootools
  • PHP vs. Ruby
  • CodeIgniter vs. Kohana
  • .NET vs. Any Popular PHP Framework
  • Chrome Developers Tools vs. Firebug
  • JavaScript Libraries vs. Vanilla JS
  • Myspace vs. Friendster (…kidding)

So that’s it! Who’s game? This should be fun and educational!

What about a PHP vs Javascript? Just the language, since they do compete now with Node JS.

  • http://www.shiftedwork.de/blog Daniel S

Great Idea! I think, the most powerful language is the language you are good at.

  • A reader

I wouldn’t mind performing as PHP its advocate.

  • Johan André

I’d love to see a battle between CodeIgniter Reactor and Fuel. Fuel is kindof new and still in beta but is awesome and is kindof inspired by CodeIgniter / Kohana…

  • http://hultner.se Alexander Hultner

As mentioned earlier the 5 year rule isn’t realistic for some subjects. Most frameworks in use today are less then 5 years old or just about to turn 5. Like CodeIgniter were released publicly first 28 February 2006 which is 5 years just a little more then 2 weeks from now and the stable release of jQuery came summer 2006, however the first versions of jQuery are probably just over 5 years old now. Same is probably true for a lot more frameworks.

    • http://hultner.se Alexander Hultner

Also I forgot to say that the only languages I have over 5 years of experience of is C and C++ and that weren’t web related in any way so I’m probably to young for this kind of article.

      • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

I’ve done some C/C++ stuff and successfully used it as CGI scripts in the past. It’s not the best way to create web applications, agreed, but it’s definitely not impossible either ;).

      • http://hultner.se Alexander Hultner

        I didn’t try to imply that you can’t use C/C++ for web-backend I just meant that I didn’t use it for that ;) .

      • Joe

Most of Facebook runs from C++

They code in Php then convert to C++ using HipHop so they can compile the code using g++

  • Edward Longman

I will quite happily serve as PHP and Codeigniter rep.

  • http://ashitvora.com Ashit Vora

    How about Python vs Ruby

    • ikame

Python and Ruby are friends. They’re both awesome and powerful languages.
Should be Python|Ruby vs PHP ^^

  • lamis

its now a language but rather a CMS, how about Joomla vs Drupal?

    • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

3 years of experience with Drupal under the belt, and only episodes with WordPress and Joomla!, so I’m not into being the one interrogated about why I like Drupal so much. But I second lamis’ suggestion. Drupal is a CMS and a framework – and note that Jeffrey mentioned “CodeIgniter vs. Kohana” (both are frameworks!) as a viable example.

Also, if I may suggest another framework: Zend. I’m relatively new to it (5 months), but I like it immensely and would like to see it contrasted with other PHP frameworks.

  • thomasfedb

I will quite happily fight for Ruby (on/off Rails) =P, Arrrgggg!

I would also battle for agile & eXtreme Programming practices if you like.

    • thomasfedb

      Jeff,

Seeing as you already have a Ruby rep, I’d love to battle it out for Rails.

I’d happily take out ( we hope =P ) Django or CakePHP, etc.

  • Mike Rosas

Wow, lost of PHP representatives, its kind of unfair to know that only one will talk for php, maybe there should be several pre-debates among a single language to pick the best representative of that particular language, that also can help overcome the 5-year-experience problem.

also, PHP vs ASP vs Perl sounds interesting.

what about mobile languages? iOS Dev vs RIAA Dev vs Android Dev maybe?

btw, im a hard coder and i use nothing but a text editor to develop websites, im still not conviced about using a framework to create websites, maybe there should be a debate about that, hard-coding vs framework usage.

also, another interesting debate could be “Dev for browser viewing on smartphones vs App Dev for Smartphones”

well, those are just some ideas.

    regards.

  • http://daneal.com Daniel Villarreal

    Ruby VS Python.

  • kuldeep

firebug Vs chrome developer tool? will be a good competition. hope you planing for it too

  • http://www.noithatonline.vn/ thiet ke noi that

I am working on php should still see a bit confusing

  • Colin

maybe a fight between the use of english and l33t

    or english and txtspk.

unfortunately i don’t see either being included.

  • Colin

I also have 10 years experience in programming PHP and ASP.NET. so maybe i could be paid to argue loudly and violently with myself?

    • John

that would be awesome +1 for that!!!

    • Dan F

Agreed, that’d be pretty funny to read

  • http://itsamit.com Amit

I’d like to advocate PHP. I can do ruby(but i am just 8 months old with it)…

  • Ed

I use both PHP and ColdFusion on a regular basis and prefer ColdFusion for a variety of reasons but I am also aware of reasons why PHP may be a better choice in different situations. I would be interested in participating as an advocate of ColdFusion.

    • John

+1 for the coldfusion guy, that is a language / framework that needs some reps. I know a lot of BIG fortune 500 companies use CF for internal, I would like to here some arguments for it.

  • http://www.cesmeci.com Selcuk

    IDE vs IDE ?
    like NetBeans vs Eclipse?

I would like to see some thoughts around IDEs

  • Evan Uebel

I’ve programmed in PHP for about 2 years now. I’d be interested in doing the PHP vs. Ruby.

  • http://infinity-plus.co.uk Sando

Why not create a battle Joomla vs Drupal it will amazing to see some pros and cons of both and could be useful for developers when choosing which one to go with on specific projects.

But anyway the idea is great and I am sure it’ll be educational for many developers.

How about the dreaded “WordPress CMS vs Everyone” ;)

  • http://www.lastrose.com LastRose

How ’bout the advantage of using tables for layout instead of css? (in a webpage)
When ever I see it done, it send shivers up my spine, but I see a large number of people out there still doing it, so there has to be an advantage. Anyone?

  • a77icu5

.net web references sucks ! one week trying to generate the proxy class to consume my webservice on smart device project and still not works, I love when php soap functions saves my day =D… if only could exist php tools to make mobile applications…

  • http://pirosb3.com Daniel Pyrathon

Awesome idea! hope to see them too!
One question, why isn’t Python (ex. Django) in the list?

    • ikame

      Agree…
Django and Python(definitely) should be in the list.

  • Roberto

I’m a senior asp.net MVC developer, with some php experience, would love to participate in .net vs php.

  • http://jaimievansanten.nl Jaimie van Santen

Would be cool to see some in-dept framework wars, such as:

Zend Framework vs ASP.NET MVC2 vs Django vs Ruby on Rails.

  • http://paninkognito.blogspot.com/ Inkognito

    Rails vs. Grails..hm?

  • Selorm Nelson

I’m much anticipating for the jquery vs mootools

It’s an excellent way to learn about other languages.

  • http://www.jeremyhutchings.com Jeremy Hutchings

    *Surely

Lets hope it’s a debate of the tech based on an example or case study, opposed to “what I say is better, because I say so” style of interaction.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Exactly. That’s why we’re only asking high level devs to participate.

    Hi,
I like PHP but spend a lot of time searching alternative for codeigniter for java based web apps and found Play Framework! My first impression is: AMAZING just like CI!!

Would loved to see some java based web app frameworks like the promising Play Framework, so Java vs PHP or ASP.

    regards

  • http://kaylaknight.com Kayla

I’d love to do anything with PHP/jQuery/Codeigniter. I have about 8 years experience with PHP, and a few years with jQuery & Codeigniter (since about they time they both became popular).

For a suggestion, perhaps a battle between the development side for two opposing CMS’s? It could discuss coding when it comes to themes, adding extensions/plugins, doing custom work, etc.

  • Nick

I think it would be great if you debate about, Cross Site Scripting vs. PHP Exploits???

  • garrafote

I’d love to see web2py and Django as part of this discussion *-*

It could be something like web2py and Django, pros and cons.

What happened with “Kohana vs CodeIgniter”? I wrote a little on this topic here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5693138/how-is-kohana-different-from-codeigniter/5695081#5695081 , would love to see that “war” finally

“Dev for browser viewing on smartphones vs App Dev for Smartphones”

well, those are just some ideas.

    regards.

  • RomanTsjupa

I would really love to be part of the Kohana vs Codeigniter as I really love Kohana. I would also try the .NET vs PHP framework (I’d try with http://phpixie.com) as I really hate .net =)
