Tutorial Details

As Tuts+ Premium continues to sky-rocket, our ability to post better, more frequent, content has improved dramatically as well. This week, we have a variety of fun new things available to members!

Course – How To Be A Terminal Pro

In this fifteen-episode course, you’ll learn how to take advantage of that scary app you never touch: Terminal! We’ll begin with the obligatory “hello world” command, and work our way up to advanced usage.

Course – JavaScript Testing With Jasmine

Admit it: you say that you test your JavaScript, but, in reality, you…don’t. That’s okay; the idea of testing JavaScript is a relatively new thing. And unfortunately, there aren’t too many “hold your hand” resources for getting up and running. Well, that all changes with this course. We start from scratch, and slowly work our way up the testing chain.

Along the way, we’ll take advantage of the fantastic Jasmine BDD (Behavior-Driven Development) framework to make our tests as readable as possible. Upon completion of the course, you’ll not only have a robust test suite at your fingertips, but your tests will also make for fantastic documentation!

eBook - Client Centric Web Design

Other than Internet Explorer, what is the most challenging part of your job? Did you answer clients? If so, this eBook, by Paul Boag, is for you. Discover how to keep your clients happy, maintain your own sanity and produce the most effective websites you have ever built, resulting in happier clients, better websites, and improved job satisfaction.

What do you think about the frequency and Quality of the content for regular readers.?

    Things aren’t same now…

Regular readers? You mean on Nettuts+? What sort of content would you like?

      • http://laranzjoe.blogspot.com lawrence77

Web development tutorials, from beginner to advanced | Nettuts+

        Where is asp.net??

The last tutorial was on Jul 13th 2011, soon we will celebrate anniversary :D :(

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

Yeah, we don’t have a huge .NET readership, but I’d definitely like to get more content on the site soon. :)

      • http://laranz.in Lawrence77

You can easily built audience, like you built for codeigniter and sublime and tuts+ etc., If ‘you’ make .net tuts :)

Like this, and this guy’s comment

Thanks for the comment, expect more content ;)

      • mark

Yeah have to agree the content on nettuts+ has taken a real dive in quality and publishing seems sporadic at best. The only content we get now is trying to sell us something in the premium range or one of the envato market places, not much quality content coming any more, it has definitely changed from the great tut power house it used to be.

There are some tuts which focus on some more obscure library’s or software which are good but the real ‘bread and butter’ mainstream stuff doesn’t seem to be around any more.

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

Sporadic? The same posting schedule for the last few years. Mark, what type of content do you consider to be “bread and butter”?

  • http://www.cleantags.com sergio

Why not have a TDD course in PHP?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

We will! I believe that one begins recording in June – using PHPUnit. :)

      • http://www.cleantags.com sergio

Aaa great :) I am really looking forward for that one. Also I think a good course would be OOP + Design Patterns

  • http://www.xhtml.ai Damjan

Since I got a Mac I started using Sublime Text 2. But the poblem is that I don’t have the time to figure it all out. And some things are really pissing me off.

Sublime Text 2 advanced settings and features ASAP please :)

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Yep – I start working on that course soon. :)

    • http://www.amitavroy.com/justread Amitav Roy

Yes, I agree… I like the editor but there are a few advanced options which I find difficult to understand and would really like to see an article on the advanced settings.

  • Jaysone

Hi Jeff. I’d like to see a course on getting started with asp.net with c#.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      On the way this summer!

      • notta

I also would love to see more dot net tuts.

    • http://net.tutsplus.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Thanks, guys; we’ll make it happen!

  • samir

    thank you jeffrey way
i am sure that your coming tutorials will be a great success mainly because the next one will treat the most used language in the web and you’re the one who will do it.
but in near futur i hope to see an advanced tutorial about php i’am not any more a beginer but i have a lot of problems understanding the MVC system and i hope you’ll do that in the futur (with PDO may be) and may also you’ll make something (chapter about debuging in php technics “for our AHOW Moment became AHA Moment” sometime even if i fix it i didn’t know waht’s gone wrong ( i mean when we see a message error what the most commun mean and where to see to fix them)

thank you jeffrey way stay the best

  • zay

Hi Jeff, I’d like to see step-by-step tutorial on MySQL replication.

  • Rob

What I would like is a course about developing JavaScript for an entire site.

Most tutorials about developing JavaScript are about 1 page sites. But how about multiple page sites. Where you have JavaScript doing multiple things, smaller and bigger, use some frameworks, etc.

What patterns to use, how to order the files, how to include them conditionally etc.

  • avisek

I had used tutsplus premium for 1 year. Learnt a lot. Like to reduce the charges a lot for premium account.
Also need clear tutorial on coding responsive web layouts.

  • Brian

Nice to see TDD Rails, but disappointed that a “30 days to learn Rails” course has yet to enter the pipeline. I was thinking it would be right around the corner by now.

I get why people want PHP. Huge market, and tons of frameworks, tools, and support. But as a language PHP is absolute junk. Even though market demand is currently high for PHP, the cutting edge fun stuff ( and the money) is going to continue migrating to other languages and technologies.

I realize you need to please the masses, but I can think of a ton of topics more interesting than PHP. Here are a few in no particular order:

    * Ruby, Rails
    * Python, Django
    * ASP.NET, C# (already have this one), MVC 4, VS
    * EXTJS, Ember, Backbone ( Enjoyed the recent Backbone series )
    * jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch, jQ Mobi, Phone Gap, Rhodes / Rhomobile
    * Arduino :P
    * CoffeeScript

Anyways, I love Nettuts+ and Premium, but I guess I’m just jonesing for more :-D

    • http://net.tutsplus.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Hey Brian – 30 Days to Learn Ruby is definitely happening (though it may have a different name). It was really important for me to find the right instructor to do that course, but I think I’ve found him. :) Hopefully, that course will be available this summer.

  • Brian

BTW, all courses and books you mentioned look to be solid additions for sure. Definitely looking forward to Jasmine and taking my terminal skills to the next level.

  • Ningjing

Backbone.js Fundamentals, longing for this for a long time!! Finally!! But I didn’t see it on the sidebar, when will it be released?

  • Seed

Would be great to see some Symfony 2 tutorials, http://symfony.com/

    • samir

      no way body
we’re looking to learn the best here
jeffrey is gonna make a tutorial about zend the best and the fastest and the most secure php framework
      just kidding

  • Ali Baba

I would like to see more Codeigniter tutorials and more indepth integration with caching systems, ORM, PDO

    • http://net.tutsplus.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

An up-to-date CodeIgniter course is in the works right now, actually. :)

      • samir

there was a serie about codeignihter why don’t try zend framework never see a serie about it
        thanks jeffrey way

  • Supers789

i am looking for a course on writing custom jQuery widgets. The jQuery course was gr8. But it didn’t cover writing your own widgets.

  • http://gsrjv.blogspot.com Geser

Yee. Waiting For Sublime Text 2 Guide. And If U guys do Python Fundamentals or Django it will be great!

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Python Essentials is in the works!

  • Twig

Chuffed you’ve released a CoffeeScript Tut. Required to master this ASAP for my new job – promptly added to the reading list. Gracias!

    • Brian

If you are good with JavaScript you should be able to pick up CoffeeScript in no time. There are a couple tuts ( either here or on Premium, or both, I can’t recall). It’s plenty to get you started. I became proficient with CoffeeScript in about a week of use and I can’t imagine going back. Regular JS syntax seems so tedious now!

  • http://www.pc-proz.com Chuck

    Jeffrey;

I hope that when you do the Sublime 2 that you also cover the PC side. A couple of the Sublime bits that you released sounded great but only work on the Mac (bummed).

Anyway I love your style of teaching. Very easy to follow along.

Building a CMS from scratch with a Login would be nice. I’ve found a few on Codecanyon, but would prefer to learn to build one of my own.

As far as wanting some input on what “Tuts” site to create… I would really love to see a good C# tuts+ site. I don’t know about everyone else, but once I start trying to work with OOP, my brain turns to mush. I’m obviously missing some simple piece that keeps me from “getting” it so I figure the more I beat myself over the head with as many tuts as I can find, eventually the “light” will come on.

Anyway, keep up the GREAT work.

    Chuck

  • vonKristoff

Hey Jeff > great real world tuts as ever…

I’d love to see some javascript ‘scope’ overviews.. When I use JS and jQuery in my projects (say on a php page) and im loading in different js librairies, as well as my own scripts – everything tends to break because of the scope, and functions/vars arent being defined etc ..

It seems stupid – but my biggest problem moving onto javascript from AS3 has been loading the damn code into the DOM.!

  • mohit yadav

Hey jeffery thanks for your valueable tutorials,Hats off men for your good work
please tell me about html 5 tutorials

  • Fritz Lekschas

You guys have a lot of new stuff in work! Thanks :)

  • longhorn

    Hi Jeff

Any CakePHP tutorials @ work perhaps?

    Great work though

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

We have CodeIgniter and Fuel courses on the way. After that, we can definitely consider CakePHP!

      • Tim

Awesome FuelPHP Course. Can’t wait for that.

  • Francesco

Hi Jeff, from what i see a lots of more tutorials and courses are coming up, i really like the contents of nett+ premium, as i am learning(not working yet in the industry) i found easy to understand your courses but then i usually forget very, fast what i learn. I would like to see a challenging tutorial at the end of every course as i believe this is the only true way to learn.

I am sure this can kick the learning power of your courses to the moon
    .

    • Francesco

Sorry i meant i challenging assignment not tutorial… embarrassing!! :-)

  • Felix

Hey Jeffrey, do you prefer php or ror?

just asking, because i have read a post that makes me struggle to go deeper into php.
here is a link to the post: http://me.veekun.com/blog/2012/04/09/php-a-fractal-of-bad-design/

btw, thank you very very much for your great tuts here on nettuts.

  • creativeguy

please i request you to make more and more wordpress and php tutorials such as custom theme development with wordpress which completes each and every details of how to make a custom theme from wordpress starting from scratch.

may be a psd to wordpress premium tutorial series can rock.

a custom wordpress theme from scratch can be made as a premium tutorial.

under php i would really like to see object oriented PHP concept and more and more of CAKE PHP and CodeIgniter framework along with the modern php conceptual approaches.

but wordpress should be the first priority as nowday’s the web only works on PHP and wordpress.

ASP.net is useless as it’s outdated and not good to use.

why not make a PHP and wordpress Premium tutorial series which can cover how to make a really great e-commerce website, real estate websites as well as community forum websites, etc.

it would be a great idea. even if the cost of premium tutorial is high i won’t mind at all.

    • Tim

I am a PHP Developer but saying that “nowday’s the web only works on PHP and wordpress” is just WRONG in so many ways.
And also saying that “ASP.net is useless as it’s outdated and not good to use” is just WRONG.

I suggest you to read and learn new stuff as much as you can and don’t be ignorant because I assure you there is a LOT MORE than just PHP and wordpress.

      • mourhaf

I agree with Tim. one main difference we seldom experience is that asp.net is not open source. i.e. more self-taught sessions ;-). Believe me you learn a lot outta the difference between languages. I should know because i started out in Delphi and now I’m in PHP.

  • http://www.pc-proz.com Chuck

Another idea for a Tuts+ course.

How to design/develop professional web site templates so that we could sell them like the (pros) do.

Always wondered how they did it!

    Anyone else interested?

    Chuck

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

Nice! I’ll see what we can do. :)

  • http://www.cgvector.com cgvector

waiting php fundamentals i have learn a lot on JavaScript fundamentals but now i am waiting PHP fundamentals.

  • http://www.fleet-management-solutions.net/ Callie Walls

Nice PHP tutorials need in my website

  • mourhaf

1- thank you very much for your great tutorials. I’m sure they are time consuming.
2- I would like to suggest courses on these topics:
    A) PDO OOP
    B) Building PHP OOP from the ground up with jquery-ajax.
    C) More coverage of PHP frameworks.
3- I like your personal website… it’s the definition of the word “personal”.
