New from Rockable Press: Freelance Confidential

New from Rockable Press: Freelance Confidential

We’re very proud to announce the release of Freelance Confidential, Rockable Press’s newest book on freelancing. This book aims to provide the hard numbers on the biggest issues of freelancing and advice on how experienced freelancers can improve their business. More than just another single person’s view on freelancing, Freelance Confidential contains contributions from the Editor of FreelanceSwitch, Amanda Hackwith, a panel of 10 expert entrepreneurs, and 3,200 freelancers worldwide.

Last winter, we asked readers of FreelanceSwitch to contribute to a global survey on freelancing–over 3,200 responded! Get those statistics and you’ll learn the real numbers on the biggest questions which revealed some surprising new trends for the freelance industry. Did you know…?

  • Fewer freelancers live in large urban cities than did three years ago. What are the benefits?
  • New referrals from advertising and cold calling has dropped significantly. What’s the best new source?
  • Freelancers with former experience as an employee report the highest level of satisfaction and happiness. Why is that?

What’s Inside

More than just a stats book, Freelance Confidential compares survey numbers to the 2007 survey to see what’s changing. We’ve also interviewed ten amazing success stories like Ed Gandia of International Freelancer’s Academy, James Chartrand of Men with Pens, FreelanceSwitch’s own N.C. Winters, an exclusive interview with founder Collis Ta’eed, and many more.

You’ll learn the current trends and insights on big questions:

  • Where do you find new clients? You’ll be interested to see what source has grown over the past three years.
  • How much do you charge? Think hotshot consultants are able to charge the most? Think again.
  • How do you raise your rates? The numbers show it’s not a steady climb to retirement.
  • How do you stabilize your income month to month? Our experts were unanimous on two necessary steps for success: diversity and marketing. We’ll walk through the best advice for both.
  • Is social media really worth it? Forget the hype, get real and get focus.
  • How to make a successful start? Envato founder Collis Ta’eed talks about what he’d do if he had to start from scratch all over again.
  • And much more on clients, passive income, security and trends for the future!

Still undecided? Check out the Freelance Confidential launch page to download free sample pages and see what others have to say about the book.

I’m only subscribed to like Nettuts, Webdesigntuts, and PSDtuts (RSS and Twitter) and I’ve seen at least 15 advertisements about this one book (Twitter accounts, RSS feeds…) and I’m not even a fan of any of their Facebook pages. Like…this is getting ridiculous. Envato is getting to the point where it just releases a shit storm of SPAM from 30 different sources (again, Twitter accounts, RSS feeds and I’m sure their Facebook pages are lighting up) and shit we have to purchase with only a handful of free tutorials. There’s a lot of premium and a lot of just referring people to marketplace stuff (like tutorials).

Now Envato is making it so if you aren’t subscribed to their Facebook page that will spam your status wall, you get the tutorials that are already diminishing, a whole month later. I really don’t want to see my Socialite be spammed as well as my Facebook. We wouldn’t even be able to hide posts from you guys or anything because we’d then be missing out on the tutorials that come out early (which is the whole point of liking you on Facebook). So, we’d be forced to see status updates from like 5 different sections of Envato in the middle of all our friends updates that we actually care about.

I know Envato is a business, but come on… It’s like advertising and making money is Envato’s ONLY concern. I always thought this was the future of technology education, but it’s starting to be just another business.

PS: I just remembered… I’m even subscribed to the AppStorm RSS feeds and Twitter accounts. THOSE are even advertising Freelance Confidential… I guess that’s why it’s seemed like so much. I feel extremely sorry for people that are subscribed to even more than me. I’m sure I’m probably still missing some source that I’m subscribed to that’s added to this spam.

Now, in Envato fashion, whenever I see this copy pasta thrown in my face, I’m going to paste this comment.

    • Vinnie

I guess I’ll add some other things (I’m trying to provide quality feedback, not exactly kissing ass).

Envato might be under the impression that some people are only subscribed or read like ONE site and that’s it (though, I really hope not because your analytics team would be horrible). Most people that read Envato sites read like 5, probably even more (they were designed that way, of course). So, when you copy and paste the exact post to each network site, most people are getting at least 5 of the same exact RSS message. Then, (hopefully, from your perspective) those same people are also subscribed to those network site’s Twitter accounts, the see 5 more advertisements that are like the same thing. Sometimes you’ll even get a network site’s Twitter account retweeting another network site’s Twitter account so you get to see it again. Sometimes you get the network site’s editor’s personal opinion on the book so you get it again. Sometimes you even get a network site’s editor retweeting something that Collis already retweeted from someone else in an attempt to advertise. Then, if you’re a fan of the network site’s Facebook page (which again, you guys hope for), you get to see the same exact microblog posts.

I honestly was thinking about buying this book. I was one of the 3,200 people that filled out that form and I would have liked to read about all of the other freelancer’s strategies. But, I’m afraid if I do, it will only encourage Envato to keep this form of brute advertising, and I’ll end up seeing even more of this shit. I haven’t even read this post. When something is spammed so many times, people just tend to totally ignore the core content of it. For example, since you guys didn’t think of this: If anyone has ever played World of Warcraft (or another MMORPG for that matter), you are constantly getting spammed by gold sellers in both the mail and whispers. Can anyone even tell me the URL for one gold selling site (without Googling :D)? No, you can’t even though I guarantee you’ve been spammed by 30+ different gold selling sites. You can’t because right when you see the word gold or the message is structured the same way as previous messages, you completely just disregard the message. So, every time I’ve seen Freelance Confidential, I immediately, unconsciously, disregard the message. You know what? I think I actually do that for anything that says has Rockable, ninja, or rockstar in the title – most of which come from Envato. I’m serious, stop using the words “ninja” and “rockstar,” ESPECIALLY as titles. I’m not saying Rockable is a bad name, it’s just the same annoying advertising strategy is used for all of the books and they usually cost a pretty penny, so most of the time I’m not interested.

If the World of Warcraft analogy doesn’t make sense to anyone, I’d be willing to think of one that’s more related to web development because it’s a very important concept.
Most people that read Envato sites read like 5, probably even more
While I agree that the tuts+ network is great, I would have to really question the validity of that statement… I read the website, but mostly net-tuts, rarely do I venture over to the other sites. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

On a side note, do you really feel it’s wrong for them to advertise on their websites or promote their own products? Really? They gotta make money in order to justify keeping the majority of this content free for the readers… (it’s still better than TV commercials)

      • http://wpcanyon.com Boba

Damn Vinnie, you really got a lot of free time you don’t know what to do with.

Would you rather have all the Envato Tuts websites be all premium with a $1K or so yearly fee? I’m sure there will be no ads in that case.

Stop being an ass and say thank you to Envato for teaching you things your grandchildren will be learning in school.

      • http://wpcanyon.com Boba

Ohh yeah. …teaching you for FREE.

Ads are part of the internet. If you don’t want ads go to lynda.com. Tuts+ has helped me so much and the last thing I would do is complain because they are trying to generate revenue. Self promotion is part of business. Also, the ads, aren’t half as annoying as most ads on most websites.

      • Vinnie

Had you actually read my comments you would know I didn’t mention or refer to the ads on the website. Not even once. I did not mention the ads on the website because I think they are fine. I too agree, ads are part of the Internet web. But, sometimes it’s more of how you make the people that you reach feel, not how many people you can reach and certainly not how many times you can spam a person.

  • edwinhollen

Jeffery, man, your tutorials are great but these ads are not. I’m all-for buying your books, but shoving them in my face disguised as a tutorial is absurd.

Not sure how a post titled “New from Rockable Press” is disguised as a tutorial. These promos help to fuel the business — and allows us to provide you with more *free* content. You don’t have to click on these posts if you don’t want to.

  • Leandro

Seriously people, you complain about a bunch of ads when they pay people to give us free excellent tutorials and some awesomes premium tutorials?

Come on, we’re grown up people (I guess…)

  • Fez

Guys these few ads are buried amongst a tonne of awesome tutorials and screencasts. I am all in favor of these ads or whatever it takes to keep envato going. It is such a huge resource of knowledge, hell, I’d gladly donate from time to time!

By the way, it seems the ratings have been turned off throughout the site? Why’s that?

  • http://idrakimuhamad.tumblr.com idraki

It’s just ads, didn’t force and suck you in it to buy it for sure.

  • Matt

Not ‘just ads’ and NOT just a few… 20 ads on this page alone (including the “Article”). I like this site, but the eye pollution and greed are becoming too much.

Yes 20.. 1 leaderboard, 10 sidebar, membership ad, book ad, 2 codecayon, 2 tuts plus, freelance jobs / creatica / create a tutorial get hosed (I’ll combine into 1 to be nice), one at the bottom of the post, and once again – this “Article”.

And you ‘need’ book sales to do us a ‘favor’ with these free tutorials. Offensive – to those out there thinking about creating your own tutorial site – now is the time.

Or you can “Create a Tutorial, Get Hosed!”

Matt – if you don’t like our site, you don’t have to visit it. But, in order to pay our authors well enough, we need the ads. It’s as simple as that.

        Jeff,

I understand your frustration with viewers like Matt who demand things for free. However, you should also realize you can’t just say “if you don’t like it, go somewhere else” either.
