Winner Announced! Record a Screencast, Make $1,000

The regulars on Nettuts+ will be well aware of our popular weekly video tutorials, which provide the visual learners among us with a more hands-on approach to coding. I’d like to find a new talented developer and educator to help us out on Nettuts+ each week or so! And to jumpstart this search, I’ve got a thousand dollars to hand out!

Update: Winner Announced!

Congratulations to Christopher Roach for winning the competition, thanks to his excellent introduction to Node.js. Not only was his pacing pitch perfect, but both the quality and subject matter were a perfect fit for Nettuts+. Watch the video here.

But – there were a surprising number of excellent submissions to the competition. If authors are interested, I can purchase many of these off of you guys, and post them here on Nettuts+. I’ll be in touch soon to discuss, if yours was chosen for purchasing. Thanks again to all who entered, and amazing jobs — this was a tough decision!

How’s it Work?

The process is simple enough for you, John Q reader. Simply record a video tutorial on any subject that we cover on Nettuts+. That includes, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, and HTML.

You’ll enter this competition if:

  1. You enjoy teaching, and more importantly, have the heart of a teacher.
  2. You can form a complete sentence without throwing two “umms” into the mix!
  3. You’d like to have a larger presence on Nettuts+ as a paid author. In doing so, you’ll be helping to educate hundreds of thousands of readers.

But I’ve Never Recorded a Screencast Before…

Well that’s okay; that part is pretty easy, once you learn how to use the tools. I recommend using Camtasia Studio (PC and Mac) or Screenflow (Mac only) to record your video. While there are free screencasting tools available around the web, you tend to get what you pay for.

Learn how I personally create screencasts.

Screencasting Params

Try to adhere as closely as possible to the following recording parameters:

  • Resize the resolution of your monitor to around 1280×720 before recording.
  • Export at these exact dimensions.
  • Your video must be a minimum of 15 minutes long.
  • Audio quality is important; there shouldn’t be any hiss or pops. Consider using a condenser USB microphone, if you have one. If not, I highly recommend investing in an $80 Blue Snowball. If you have plans to submit tutorials and videos to Nettuts+, the cost is worth the effort, and might possibly be reimbursable from us! Regardless of whether you win, if the final product of your submission is well done, we’ll cover the cost!
  • It’s okay if you make occasional mistakes when recording your screencasts. People enjoy watching your debugging process. That said, use your best judgment, and try not to waste the viewer’s time.

Choosing the Winner

While only one person will win the $1,000 prize, that doesn’t mean that you won’t profit from your submission! If your screencast is usable on Nettuts+, we’ll pay you the standard author rate!

You’re probably thinking that the competition will be too high. Not true! I’ll guarantee you right now that we’ll receive less than 15 legitimate submissions to this competition! If you speak well, you have an amazing chance of winning!

Even better, if you are chosen as the winner, you’ll be invited to become a Staff Author on Nettuts+!

Ready…Set…

You have between now and March 22nd, EST, to submit your item. Please note that existing and past authors are not eligible to participate in this competition. Submissions can be sent to jeffrey[at]envato.com.

Get recording, and feel free to ask any questions that you might have in the comments. Good luck!

Note: Want to add some source code? Type <pre><code> before it and </code></pre> after it. Find out more
  • Kyle

I’d love to become more involved in the Nettuts community (and winning wouldn’t be too bad either =P), but I’m a bit strapped for ideas.

Re-inventing the wheel by recording another cookie cutter video tutorial about something that everyone and his mom has already watched isn’t going to do anyone much good.

Any ideas / topic suggestions for a good javascript / PHP tutorial? I’ll gladly put forth the effort to do some research and produce a quality screencast if anyone has a decent suggestion.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Yeah – this would be a great spot for readers to make requests for potential authors.

      • http://www.wesbos.com Wes Bos

        More NodeJS tuts!

      • srigi

May I ask? For PHP tutorials, there are two choices:
        - raw PHP
        - web framework

I’m wondering about the latter choice – what to use? I think, it is not good idea to program in something completly new to NT+ readers. Here on NT+ you got CodeIgniter serie, but what in case I don’t like this framework (CI is sooo simple, I’m not comfortable using it in realworld apps)?

  • http://interacciondigital.net/ Ariel

I would love to participate if the “Spanish Nettuts video contest” exists, I understand, read and write well in English, but there are plenty of “umms” when I speak it.
    Good luck to everyone!

    • http://www.danharper.me Dan Harper

You could always edit out any “umms” or extended pauses :)

  • Johnny Freeman

Very enticing! I just may enter… is it ok if my three toddlers are screaming in the background during the screencast? ;)

  • http://www.marioplanet.com Zach

I agree with Kyle, but I’m very excited about this competition!

  • Ryan Melnikas

Well if you want ideas how about converting any webpage into Joomla, WordPress or any other CMS.
And maybe at the start talking about which one to use for which project or client depending on their technology skills.

    • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

I was always craving for Drupal knowledge on Nettuts+. Seeing none, I offered to prepare screencasts about it, but my offer was rejected. Maybe you have better luck ;)

    • http://nutrifit.ph Armando E. Lopez

I agree with this. Converting the “Already made webpage” into a CMS is “BENEFICIAL” to the community.

  • http://fire-studios.com Jonathan Wolfe

Too bad about previous writers not being eligible. Knocks me out of contention.

  • http://nikkobautista.com Nikko Bautista

Can we discuss any topic? (Assuming the topic falls under the Nettuts+ topic umbrella, e.g. PHP, HTML etc)

    • http://nikkobautista.com Nikko Bautista

Just saw Jonathan’s comment. That knocks me out of the competition as well. Oh well.

  • Manos

This is amazing… !!! nice way of extending your Knowledge library guys… the most productive and efficient way on the web … keep it up guys… Me and my mates admire you…!! Peace From Greece… Euxaristw

  • http://thatryan.com Ryan

Yeah so does this mean anyone who has been published here before can not submit? Kind of a bummer :(
What if we want a chance to be a staff author! :)

  • Shiro

How about project management tool / tip,

How to build a test case for a team in PHP environment (windows development). -phpundercontrol? How to setup, sample, step by step.

Would like to know more about this.

    • Chintan

A Project management tool hey? What features would you want, I might just give this a go :)

      • Shiro

First, is how to setup and configure that is a definitely a need when u want to kick start.
        2. Do a simple test case in a framework environment (eg CodeIgniter). How to automatic run the test case before deploy the project on stage / live.

This can give an idea how to start and how to expand in future.

  • Gareth

I am pretty keen to make some video tutorials for nettuts. Would Drupal related tutorials like theming, site building and module development be excepted?

    • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

Dunno about the NetTuts+ staff, but I’d love to see more resources on that. Especially if it’s Drupal 7, as resources about it are still pretty scarce, considering that it was released two months ago. I’ve already built a few websites with Drupal 7 and feel more or less comfortable with its enhanced templating, but I definitely don’t feel up to doing a screencast about this.

I already recorded a different one though and am about to submit it ;)

  • Justin

Would you consider a tutorial on Python, say, working with the Django web framework? It’s not in your list of subjects, but definitely Nettuts+ relevant material.

    • http://www.themesteam.com Robert

Not connected to NetTuts+ in any way personally, however I would really love to see that even if it does not win and if you, Justin, produce a good cast I am certainly going to root for you. By the way, I think I can remember one or two posts on Django and Python on NetTuts in any case a simple search of the terms you mentioned would reveal whether that is true or not.

    • http://www.joakimkejser.dk Joakim Kejser

A getting started with Python and Django tutorial would be awesome!

      • John

+1 on these. Python 3+ and CherryPy or Build your Own Framework would be cool too.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Sure – Python tutorials will do just fine.

  • http://www.rpgrafik.com Rasmus P.

I would loooove to se an EXTENSIVE review of Coda.. From the basic editor to how you can speed up workflow and stuff like that!

  • Gaurav Mehta

    Hi Jeff,

Can we also talk about jquery?

    Thanks and Regards,
    Gaurav Mehta

  • http://www.webimpulse.co.uk Oliur

Great! But don’t you think the time is a bit too tight? Less than a week for someone who hasn’t recorded a single screencast yet or don’t have the right tool. Should have allowed atleast 2 weeks, but well lets see how much can i do.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

You might be right. If that’s the case, I’ll extend the deadline by a week.

  • André Freitas

Where do we send our submissions?

  • http://imkwaa.com Olle

Wow, I’m so incredibly excited about this! I’ve got the best idea for a screencast ever, and I think I’m able to do it pretty well. But, what’s the catch? Write weekly articles, “or else!”?

You’ll hear from me soon, Jeffrey!

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Certainly not — but I would like the winner to submit to Nettuts+ more often.

      • http://imkwaa.com Olle

        That sounds very reasonable :)

  • http://www.devtuts.com.br/wp Rafael Angeline

    Wow! That’s nice =D

A question: more than one submission?

    Thanks!

  • http://joshriser.com Josh

Now if I can only find a microphone..

    • http://joshriser.com Josh

Also, where do we submit the videos to?

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

        jeffrey[at]envato.com

      • http://joshriser.com Josh

Got it. And do quick tips count, or does it have to be a full tutorial?

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

I doubt a quick tip has a shot at winning.

      • http://joshriser.com Josh

        Alright, thanks!

      • http://www.JeremyCarlsten.com Jeremy Carlsten

Maybe I just can’t think right now but do you mean an email address jeffery@envato.com or a personal message through envato?

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

        Email is fine. jeffrey[at]envato.com

      • http://www.JeremyCarlsten.com Jeremy Carlsten

So the video is too large for gmail’s maximum attachment size, would you prefer if i uploaded it on my site for download or upload it to youtube( or something along that line )

      • Prajjwal Singh

Umm, I have the same problem right now, the video is too big for email. Should I just send you a link to my video instead?

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

A DropBox or YouTube link will work as well.

  • Borinschi Ivan

    Good

  • JeremyTiki

Of course you have to put this up right over mid-term too >->

  • http://educsis.com Edwin Orellana

Can this be a Codeigiter Tutorial?

I have been pondering on doing screencasts for months as my writing isn’t exactly great (but working on it)…but having a strong southern english accent is what really puts me off!

If everyone can handle that, then i am in! :o)

    • DJK

You’ll appeal to the British audience, that’s for sure.
Maybe even the American audience (I’ve heard they like our British accents but who knows). ;D

      • neil pearce

Yeah, it’s not as bad as i make out but i do get the mickey taken out of me at work. Anyway, i will give it a shot either now or later?

  • http://andrius.miasnikovas.lt/ Andrius Miasnikovas

What about a screencast on some aspect of Java? I’ve always wondered why there are no Java related tutorials/screencasts on Nettuts+

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Ehh – we don’t have a huge Java base on Nettuts+. Probably better to choose something else.

  • Farzad

    Hi

    I’m personally a good web developer/designer (I’m not saying I’m too good)!

Over the last few month I was thinking to enhance Blogspot/Blogger to something that nobody ever seen before!

Well, nowadays everybody tend to use WordPress for their blog, even you guys use WordPress over here! But what if somebody say a student couldn’t afford to pay for web hosting, then what! What should they do!!!

Well, this is what I’m planning to bring over here to Nettuts+ Network!

So by doing such screencasting, not only I get paid but also students and people with limited/low budget can have an amazing blog running over Blogspot/Blogger for absolutely FREE!

So what do you think? Doesn’t it sounds good!

My plan is to enhance Blogger/Blogspot by designing completely a new them + a lot of hacks that you guys will look into!

Let me know ASAP as I want to this over weekend!

Cheers and good luck to all the Tuts+ community!

    Farzad, London :)

    • neil pearce

But wordpress offers a free hosting service…..wordpress.com?

      • Farzad

        Certainly!

        But…
        What about the design?
What about custom domain! Which must be paid for! About £17/Year

        But with Blogspot/Blogger

Design is entirely up to you! FREE (As long as you have a professional theme/template)
Custom domain name! Absolutely for FREE!

        What else!

        Thanks for participating!

    • http://nutrifit.ph Armando E. Lopez

I will root for this. Please let this be one of the next screencast/tutorial here at nettuts

  • http://sevenlayersdesign.com/ Andy Hutchins

Very exciting. I have been planning on starting to do some screencasts for quite some time now. I have a condensor mic, but I still need a Phantom powered XLR -> USB adapter. This just may be the push I need to start doing some. I had done some back in college for certain courses, but none professionally. As others have pointed out though, I am struggling to think up a good topic for one.

Sounds like a fun contest though. Good luck to all.

    Andy

  • http://rainofstars.com Chatwin

Thank you for the great opportunity. Count on me.

  • Eastern Block

What about ASP.NET tutorials? I know you didn’t specifically state those, but just checking to see if they will work as well.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

I can use .NET videos — but I already have Jeremy who does those for us.

      • Ali Koubeissi

        Hello Jeffery,

Is there an interest in a series to cover all aspects and details of ASP.NET MVC3? I understand that there is someone doing .NET, however, .NET is a very a massive subject and I believe there should be more then one person covering this subject (or any other subject). Different people = different approaches = different way of thinking.

    Is there an age requirement?

Also, is there a maximum time alotted?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      Preferably 18 and up.

      • http://www.cyberstream.us Eli Mitchell

        Preferably? Yes or no?

If I entered and mine was chosen, then I wouldn’t mind passing up the money if credit cards are the issue.

  • http://www.cyberstream.us Eli Mitchell

The best free screencast recorder that I’ve found is CamStudio (http://camstudio.org).

  • http://devtuts.com.br/wp Rafael Angeline

Jeff, we can submit more than once tutorial?

    Thanks.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      Yes

  • http://markus-schlegel.com Markus

Is it possible to join the competition from outside the US? I am asking because a lot of sites allow participating in these kind of contests only from within the same jurisdiction.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      Yes – world wide.

  • Csongor Kiss

Is there an age limit? I would like to try it but I’m afraid I’m too young…

  • Jack Franklin

Is the best way to submit to upload it to Youtube and send you the URL?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Any method will do just fine. Dropbox link, YouTube, Blip, whatever.

  • http://jacobdubail.com Jacob

Love this idea. I’ve wanted an excuse to submit a screencast for months. What a great motivator… and I already have an idea.

  • moosc

    Suggestions: screencast about sinatra/padrino !

    More ruby stuff!!

  • http://www.amazing-themes.com David

Cool, i’d love someone to do a screencast on how to build a simple app/website with Ruby on Rails…

  • http://www.iamiivo.com Iivo

Not participating, but throwing an idea for tutorial: something about working with the Facebook API.

  • Damon Sharp

    Jeff-

Are you looking for something polished with intros, etc., or just the raw (somewhat edited) footage? Thanks, great contest. Now I need to get a mic! Might be pushing the deadline if I don’t buy soon though.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

I’m looking for a finished product.

      • Damon Sharp

        Jeff-

Thanks for the reply. That’s what I’m shooting for! My mic is ordered! Now to buy Camtasia (been meaning to anyway).

  • Douglas Dlutz

I have an excellent idea, but I think it will come up a few mins short (somewhere along 10 – 12 mins total). Would that get me disqualified automatically since it is less than 15 or would the overall quality of the video count stronger than that?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Not if you make up for the shortened time with quality. :)

  • http://www.deminoodle.be Sam

Could a Sencha tutorial become handy ? Sencha is used for making mobile applications..

  • Sean

This is a great, but the 15th of March is just around the corner. I would love to do one, but I’m not sure it’s possible to put something together of great quality in 6 days, especially because it’s the first time we’ll all be creating a screen cast. Could we all get an extension on that date please?

  • http://www.nouveller.com/ Benjamin Reid

I think I’ll give this a go. Time to dig out my microphone.

  • http://evansofts.com evanxg

it would be great if the deadline could be extended.

  • Andreas Madsen

I will give it the best i got. But the subject I want to cover is pretty big (many about 2-3 hours) if I have to go in deep.

Is it fine to split it up and send more articles?

    • Andreas Madsen

Sorry a typo: (maybe about 2-3 hours)

  • http://dagrevis.lv/ daGrevis

I possibly could try, but English isn’t my native language. And my speaking skills aren’t good enought. Damn! (

  • Taha Hesham

    Is WordPress tut acceptable?

  • Bruno

the language can be in portuguese?

    • Luis

Sure! or Chinese.. all of us speak both..
      No offense ;) just kidding.

  • Michael

As most others have said, this is great. I really want to make a video and submit it, but I Have no MIC, and ordering one now would mean I still won’t have one for a few days. Extending the deadline by a week would be fantastic!
