Winner Announced! Record a Screencast, Make $1,000

The regulars on Nettuts+ will be well aware of our popular weekly video tutorials, which provide the visual learners among us with a more hands-on approach to coding. I’d like to find a new talented developer and educator to help us out on Nettuts+ each week or so! And to jumpstart this search, I’ve got a thousand dollars to hand out!

Update: Winner Announced!

Congratulations to Christopher Roach for winning the competition, thanks to his excellent introduction to Node.js. Not only was his pacing pitch perfect, but both the quality and subject matter were a perfect fit for Nettuts+. Watch the video here.

But – there were a surprising number of excellent submissions to the competition. If authors are interested, I can purchase many of these off of you guys, and post them here on Nettuts+. I’ll be in touch soon to discuss, if yours was chosen for purchasing. Thanks again to all who entered, and amazing jobs — this was a tough decision!

How’s it Work?

The process is simple enough for you, John Q reader. Simply record a video tutorial on any subject that we cover on Nettuts+. That includes, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, and HTML.

You’ll enter this competition if:

  1. You enjoy teaching, and more importantly, have the heart of a teacher.
  2. You can form a complete sentence without throwing two “umms” into the mix!
  3. You’d like to have a larger presence on Nettuts+ as a paid author. In doing so, you’ll be helping to educate hundreds of thousands of readers.

But I’ve Never Recorded a Screencast Before…

Well that’s okay; that part is pretty easy, once you learn how to use the tools. I recommend using Camtasia Studio (PC and Mac) or Screenflow (Mac only) to record your video. While there are free screencasting tools available around the web, you tend to get what you pay for.

Learn how I personally create screencasts.

Screencasting Params

Try to adhere as closely as possible to the following recording parameters:

  • Resize the resolution of your monitor to around 1280×720 before recording.
  • Export at these exact dimensions.
  • Your video must be a minimum of 15 minutes long.
  • Audio quality is important; there shouldn’t be any hiss or pops. Consider using a condenser USB microphone, if you have one. If not, I highly recommend investing in an $80 Blue Snowball. If you have plans to submit tutorials and videos to Nettuts+, the cost is worth the effort, and might possibly be reimbursable from us! Regardless of whether you win, if the final product of your submission is well done, we’ll cover the cost!
  • It’s okay if you make occasional mistakes when recording your screencasts. People enjoy watching your debugging process. That said, use your best judgment, and try not to waste the viewer’s time.

Choosing the Winner

While only one person will win the $1,000 prize, that doesn’t mean that you won’t profit from your submission! If your screencast is usable on Nettuts+, we’ll pay you the standard author rate!

You’re probably thinking that the competition will be too high. Not true! I’ll guarantee you right now that we’ll receive less than 15 legitimate submissions to this competition! If you speak well, you have an amazing chance of winning!

Even better, if you are chosen as the winner, you’ll be invited to become a Staff Author on Nettuts+!

Ready…Set…

You have between now and March 22nd, EST, to submit your item. Please note that existing and past authors are not eligible to participate in this competition. Submissions can be sent to jeffrey[at]envato.com.

Get recording, and feel free to ask any questions that you might have in the comments. Good luck!

I have a few questions for those who have made screencasts in the past.

What makes a screencast really good and memorable? What types of things should be avoided?

  • http://philohermans.com Philo

To bad that previous authors can’t join the competition :(

  • Kenth

    Hello!
A tip for other mac users who can’t set the monitor resolution to 1280×720. It is possible to crop the video to the right dimensions after recording.

    • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

If you use Camtasia, you can choose the size of the recorded area and tuck your windows to fit it too. I did this with my submission: set the screen resolution to 1280×800, set the recording area to 1280×720 and resized my windows (3 in total) to fit that. Other trick I’ve been using very often was recording a virtual machine. Check this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRs38riiZw8 – I recorded it from Windows 7. Launched VBox, resized the guest OS to 1280×720 (VBox allows to use any resolution, even if not available on your host machine) and set Camtasia to record the contents of the VBox window.

    • http://www.mateuszwijas.com Mat

How can you crop the video? I’m using Screen Flow and I exported to .mov but don’t see any option for cropping.

I get the feeling that this isn’t a huge issue though since Jeff said “around” 1280×720.

      • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

He said to set the resolution to around 1280×720 BEFORE recording, but export at these EXACT dimensions. This is the standard resolution for online HD videos, for instance, YouTube favours videos exported at 1920×1080 or 1280×720 (they experience the least quality degradation during the conversion process).

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

The reason for doing this is because the quality suffers when you resize the video during export. For maximum clarity, export at the exact dimensions that you record at.

      • Kenth

Look at the bottom left, above your recordings. There’s a button that say “Resize the canvas” area if you hover it, it has a crop icon also. Click it and you can crop your recorded video, i’m using version 2.1.7 btw. I don’t think that doing this within screenflow actually degrades quality, because of the way ScreenFlow is working. Or am I wrong here?

  • Gareth

Hi Jeffrey, I have been working on a pretty cool video but am having serious doubts about completing this on time. Is there any change of a few more days? Otherwise I will use a fall back idea but isn’t nearly as cool.

    • Matias

Have you noticed that the time has already been extended by a week? The deadline is 22nd March.

Yep – you guys were right. I extended it by a week.

      Please do. :)

  • Tom

Guys, you are rich, or you made this image of you :DD But what about audio quality? If I won $1000, first thing that I would do, would be buying microphone! It’s difficult to beat with somebody who have great mic and your are making just noisy ‘chrrrr … dum dum dum … chrrrrr’

    • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

A good microphone needn’t cost you a fortune. While a condenser is definitely a good idea (I myself use 80€ Behringer B1 mics, a fair compromise between price and quality), you can get away even with a dynamic one, if you know what to choose. For 20€ you could easily get a Behringer XM8500. Or the whole recording kit for 80€: http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/PODCASTUDIO-USB.aspx – I started off with this one, and my first musical recordings were made with this tiny set (and hey, it worked OK!). I also did screencasts with it, with rather good audio quality (maybe not perfect, but then again, my condenser mics pick up the computer fan’s hum anyway). Like I said, it’s not a fortune.

  • http://makesence.nl Alex

Hi Jeffrey! Question: I have two ideas, I might make a screencast about (I have been studying them for myself) wp-config.php hacking and floats in html, both subjects have been touched before on nettuts, although not recently. Either of them a good idea, or same-old-same-old?

    thanks!

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Sure – both sound like great ideas.

  • http://blacklabel.lt Matt

Could you please tell us what screencasts are already submitted? It would be a waste of time if everyone submitted some kind of CSS3 and HTML5 screencast. I have tons of ideas for what would be an awesome tutorial, but I have no idea if it has been already been posted :)

  • Kyle Doherty

    Hi Jeffrey,

I was wondering if you had a maximum time limit you were looking for. I have a screen cast I’m working on that is a rather large project (building an entire application from the ground up) and while I’m condensing it as much as possible it’s still kind of a long one. I’ve split it into two parts and each are around an hour. Is that going to be a problem?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      No max limit.

  • http://sevenlayersdesign.com/ Andy Hutchins

    Hey Jeff,

Would a screencast that goes in depth of how to use a certain jQuery plugin qualify? I have been working with a plugin lately that has helped me a lot and I could certainly fill at least 15 minutes with all the ways to one could use it. What do ya think?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      Sure.

  • http://aoberoi.me Ankur

What is the judging criteria for the winning screencast? not sure how a 15-20 tutorial can compete with a 2 hr+ series if those are being considered for the same prize.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

We’ll be focusing on sound quality, pace, subject matter, how well the author “teaches” the concepts, etc.

  • Miro

Jeffrey, do we have till midnight on March 22nd? or is the deadline midnight the 21st? the full day on the 22nd would be a huge help.

  • Scott

Is the deadline Midnight Tuesday the 22nd Eastern Time?

  • Marcos

Hi, do we have until today (monday) 23:59 or tommorrow 23:59?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

Competition ends in 9 hours from the time of this writing. So the 22nd 12:00 AM is the cut-off point.

      • http://aoberoi.me Ankur

oh man! i thought i had til tomorrow evening. i’ll try my best to get it done tonight.

  • Mike

    Jeffrey,

Will we get confirmation that you have received our submissions?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

No – but we did receive it. We’ll list all the entries after the competition concludes. :)

  • Gaurav Narula

Finally done with the screencast and submitted it :D Was confused about the deadline being 00:00 March 22 or 23:59 March 22. Played safe submitted it today itself ^_^

  • http://sevenlayersdesign.com/ Andy Hutchins

Time to get down to business. Ive got the prep down now I just need to actually record it.

  • http://ideainator.com Eric Steele

I submitted mine yesterday. Jeff, would calm my nerves and let me know you received it? I’d feel horrible if I put this much time in and sent my submission to the wrong address.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

      Received. :)

      • http://ideainator.com Eric Steele

Woot. Did you also receive the bribe? I don’t want that half-eaten kit-kat to fall into the wrong hands.

  • Prajjwal Singh

Did you get mine? My email bounced thrice, so I used a different email account, never got confirmation…..

Did you send it to jeffrey[at]envato.com?

      • Prajjwal Singh

I did, must have been a typo somewhere, the last one went through just fine. :-). Did you get it?

  • http://www.lastrose.com LastRose

Trying to send it but running into size issues,
Is there another way to submit it?

    • http://www.lastrose.com LastRose

nevermind, saw a previous comment about dropbox or youtube.

  • http://jacobdubail.com Jacob

Submitted… via dropbox. Looking forward to seeing the winning video!

    Hello Jeff,

I love all the content here on net.tutsplus, and think it’s a great model for education networks. I’m also very interested in submitting articles to the site, as I’m a little shaky with on-the-spot video demonstrations and work much better taking a little more time to craft comprehensive tutorials.

Do you think there’s a possibility of a similar contest in the future regarding articles as opposed to screencasts?

    Thanks,

    Graham

  • http://www.devtuts.com.br/wp Rafael Angeline

    Wow! Having some problems here…

    More one day? Please…

    Thanks

    • Damon Sharp

I second that. I really thought we had until midnight tomorrow night. I am exporting out mine from Camtasia right now, but it will not be completed in time for upload by midnight.

  • Damon Sharp

Now that I actually re-read the rules, it doesn’t really clarify a time, just a date. I would think any time on the 22nd would be fine. March 22 @ 23:59 is still the 22nd.

This export is taking forever btw.

I think I’m going to FTP this to my server and email in a link. I was going to dropbox it, but I think that will definitely take too long.

Hopefully I can get this in on time!

EIther way, looking forward to seeing the entries. Thanks!

    • http://www.gauravmali.com Gaurav Mali

Definitely! Make it till the end of 22nd

    • http://www.devtuts.com.br/wp Rafael Angeline

Hmm.. then if we send before midnight of today (22) we are in Jeffrey?

      Thanks!

  • Damon Sharp

Camtasia still exporting. Looks like I missed the deadline.

  • Damon Sharp

Somy video finally exported only to find out that Camtasia was set at 50% full screen capture. So my 48 min tutorial is not at the correct resolution. Just great!!!!

  • Gareth

    Hello Jeffrey,

I sent my 2 tutorials in via email a couple of hours ago. Can you please confirm that you received them.

    Thank you

  • WyattRiddle

Hey Jeffrey! Just wanted to make sure you got my submission yesterday! Thanks!

  • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

I see there are quite a few submissions. That’s cool! I’m impatient to watch all of them! Jeffrey, are there less than 15 legitimate submissions, as you had predicted? I sure hope there’s more :P

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      There’s about 30 this time.

      • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

30 submissions, nice! You’ve quite some work ahead of you then analysing them all, that’s a lot of material to go through. Hope you have fun doing it :)

  • http://angelmedrano.com Angel Medrano

When in is the winner going to be announced?

    • http://www.umbraprojekt.com mingos

With 100 entries, you’d need time to come up with a fair verdict too :D

      • Gaurav Narula

I’m yet to see a download (other than mine) from the mediafire link I mailed you Jeffrey. Can you confirm that you have received the tutorial?

  • http://www.jgvisual.com Jonathan Goldford

Does anyone know where we can see the video they chose? I’m sure all these videos were awesome.

    • http://angelmedrano.com Angel Medrano

      I don’t think they’ve announced?

      • http://www.jeremycarlsten.com Jeremy Carlsten

I second that statement. Although, he did mention monday, I think he underestimated the time it was going to take.

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

Yeah – sorry guys. I’m still going over all the submissions. Each one is about a 20-30 minute video, so it’s taking longer than expected. :)

      • http://www.umbraprojekt.pl mingos

Hey, no need to be sorry, Jeffrey, this does look like a rather big task, and I think everyone will agree that it’s worth taking some extra time to do a good job instead of making it on time, but not polishing things properly. Plus, look at what all the best restaurants do: they make you wait more than really necessary because it increases your appetite :).

      • http://www.jeremycarlsten.com Jeremy Carlsten

haha I kinda wish this was facebook, I’d ‘like’ that last comment….
