In the year since we first announced ThemeForest right here on Nettuts+ the marketplace has grown like gangbusters. Even in the middle of the recession sales on the site have been racing along. In fact we’ve had one top selling author pulling in earnings of over $2,000 a week! Sure only a few very dedicated and talented people get up to that level, but hey it shows what’s possible!
Three weeks ago Jeffrey put together a brand new pair of categories to open up on ThemeForest to allow our community to sell PHP Scripts and Javascript Scripts. In the 20 days since we’ve seen some very strong sales in both categories, particularly PHP.
So today I’m writing to invite Nettuts+ PHP and Javascript devs with some spare time and some killer scripts to come on over and check out how sales have been going in the short time the categories have been up!
A Couple of Popular Items So Far
- ClientWorks – A Client Manager
- PHP Event Calendar
- PayPal Payment Terminal
- Quick and Easy File Hosting Script
- Invoicing System
- Smooth JS Calendar Component
- Killer Accordion Script
- And lots more PHP & JS ….
Meanwhiles … Seen Admin Skins Lately?
One of the most enduringly popular areas on ThemeForest, particularly for developers has been our Admin Skins category, these are generic themes for back end projects like CMS’s and admin interfaces. We’ve posted about this before on Nettuts+, but in case you haven’t seen the latest awesome work being added, take a look at these beauties:
And there are many more. So if you haven’t been to ThemeForest lately, stop by, check out some of the the awesome WordPress themes and HTML Templates as well as our new PHP Scripts and Javascript Components categories!

RoyalSlider – Touch-Enable ... only $12.00
hey , i had sent my Component to Jeff but i didn’t got the response.
there should be atleast a response that what things i should add more to my component or what is missing in my component .
please reply me atleast.
thanks
Did you submit the component via ThemeForest? … You can’t just email it; that’s not how ThemeForest works. :)
i emailed him when there was no option of submitting the component at themeforest .
and he respond me that he gold my component and when he will made decision , they will contact me.
lots of days passed.
i know there can be some problems but i will be happy if i get the response so i could make my component more professional.
@james i will submit my component again with Best Quality Practices in the mid of August.
thanks to post the article about Notes of PHP/JS Categories at themeforest.net
Just resubmit the component via ThemeForest, it takes 5 minutes.
Adnan – As I told you, there were many issues with that component.
Jeff – If there were issues , you should tell me so i could work on it.
isn’t it ?
I did tell you. You’ve sent me many, many emails regarding this subject.
Jeff, you’re an Envato ninja! It’s like you’re everywhere at once! :)
Thats great. I wonder if I can whip up anything for these categories
Is there anywhere people can suggest php or js scripts? So people know what to create.
A good place would probably be the ThemeForest forums.
Thank you for featuring Cleanity Collis =)
Cool stuff, but the prices on those php scripts or no where near the quality of what they should be, php scripts should be free, thats the point of open source.
A download counter for $3? Rating system for $5? Comment system for $5? Oh please.
You can download a full blown framework FOR FREE with code that will out perform anything that you would buy from these submissions.
I also bet 90% of these submissions are wrong, have security issues, or could be written a lot cleaner.
Just my two cents.
I have to agree.
As much as I love envato and nettuts I really don’t think there should be a marketplace for JS and PHP scripts.
Should my clients get their php scripts I implement in their web sites for free (that is, not to pay me for time spent doing so?) Can I forward you some of that work?
I just don’t understand why people think that Open Source should be free. Open source does not mean anything else than what the name suggests – it is open. If you want free, head for freeware.
“I also bet 90% of these submissions are wrong, have security issues, or could be written a lot cleaner.” – that is quite an arrogant thing to say. I don’t know how good you are with coding, but I am sure you don’t know how good those who submitted their code are neither. So your two cents are really not worth anything, since you are just assuming.
Well said.
I agree
Totally agree with you!! i really like the open source projects but it doesn’t mean that i’m going to build custom applications (using open source projects) for free.
I use RoR, Spring, hibernate, EJBs, etc… all of them are “open source”, but i charge my customers for my knowledge of those frameworks, my time, my effort, my code, etc…
Open source it is not free, it is open to everyone!!
I am quite proficient in PHP and have been writing it for 4+ years. I am not the best but I know good clean and structural code.
All I am saying is, why would you buy those scripts for those prices when you can easily find a tutorial or download a script exactly like it for free?
I understand when PHP scripts are sold like Invision Forums, or ActiveCollab because those are worth it, not the stuff they have listed currently.
All my scripts I have on my site are either intermediate to advanced stuff and I am giving it away for free. Envato should filter out anything that is a minor basic code snippet and leave in anything large like I mentioned that is actually worth the price.
Why should the software be free? Nothing in life is free. Even if php scripts are “sold” for free, someone bears the cost. In this case, you’re demanding the freelance developer to bear the cost since of his time, effort, hard work, and opportunity cost.
Who should get reimbursed/paid, the originator of the software or the people using it?
“…but the prices on those php scripts or no where near the quality of what they should be… A download counter for $3? Rating system for $5? Comment system for $5? ”
Download Counter – 50$
Rating system – 80$
Comment system – 100$
That’s how much i’m charging for making a custom script for my clients(and none of them said it’s too much). And you think 5$ is too much?
Open source means the source is available, it does not mean an author should not be reimbursed for their work. If you don’t feel it is worth the few dollars, don’t buy it and roll your own. But sometimes you need something good and you don’t have the time, then you can buy it and save yourself some time. I think these prices are a steal for what you are getting.
your two cents in cherish, but it does’n mean ure right. Read Palusikos comment.
Open Source doesn’t mean you haven’t pay for it. It only means that you can read, modify and maybe redistribute it, if the author allows it.
And: The price of the listed scripts on themeforest really can’t say you which quality they have. I’ve seen scripts, which are really expensive and were at the same time the worst scripts i’ve ever seen – and the opposite of this fact. Low cost, best quality. The price says nothing.
Frameworks? hah, if you want to have fully overblown features you really don’t need – than you’re right.
Are these admin themes for wordpress or any ‘content managements system’ in particular? Or completely bespoke?
By the way, I think the php and js categories are well valued and compliment the rest of themeforest.
No, you have to know php
Nope. They’re just HTML/CSS skins. That way, you can customize them for your own CMS.
Some great additions to ThemeForest. A few other categories that I want to start selling in. The network just keeps getting better!
I think the new php scripts are a great add on for theme forest,
to be fair some of the scripts can be found else where for free
but you dont get any support , or guarantee that its of a high quality
I just hope the nettuts quality dosent drop down now
as we never see much psd to html coding, due the templates on themeforest
Hey Collis!! is there a way that I can request any specific scripts?
Something like a wish-list would be awesome! where people can post what they are looking for and the developers can build scripts accordingly
Anyway this is a excellent section! not only to use for projects, but also I can learn lots about how to do things correctly!
oh! btw! are these scripts going through any QA cycle?
Great Idea. I know whenever I have downtime I try to think up a useful script, but it’s hard to come up with something. Definitely get a suggestions section!
We don’t have anything specific in place, but you can always create a new thread in the ThemeForest forum. :)
Nice to see that php and javascripts are for sale on themeforest, although some of the scripts I’ve seen offered for free elsewhere.
It will be one hell of an hard mission to find all the thieves who will eventually publish 3rd party scripts of all kinds.
Hopefully it won’t ruin Theme Forest’s reputation. It would be a true shame, wouldn’t it?
I have to say there are some awesome web templates there (I’m looking at the admin ones), rather cheap and awesome! – I’m convinced to get one!
Now if only there was a tutorial on tuts plus that took one of those excellent admin skins and created a CMS with PHP/MySQL and made it all work. Hey Jeff, make it happen!
Great stuff all around.
