We Need an Awesome Staff Writer

We Need an Awesome Staff Writer

It’s that time again; we’re in need of a kick-ass – and consistent – author to help out on Nettuts+ once per week. You’ll be expected to submit one article each week and you’re free to choose your topics, as long as they’ll appeal to our audience. This is a paid gig, so read on!

Update: If you’ve already contacted us, please forward your email to net[at]tutsplus.com. Thanks, and sorry for the confusion!

What We’re Looking For

  • Rock solid knowledge: Nettuts+ is a highly respected source of information and we expect the same high quality from you.
  • Excellent writing skills: You must be comfortable with the English language. We can proof your content but we can’t rewrite everything for you. To put it simply, if you struggle when deciding whether to write its or it’s, this might not be the gig for you.
  • Consistency: Professionalism is key here. We expect you to keep the schedule we’ve agreed upon.

What’s the Pay?

  • $150 per tutorial for the first month.
  • $200 per from the second month onwards, with a pay review after a year.
  • Option to submit to our premium Plus program which pays significantly more.

So, assuming you submit an article a week, and one Premium tut/screencast per month, you can expect to make between $1100 – $1400 each month.

Excellent! Where do I Sign Up?

We’ll need the following information from you:

  • Name.
  • A few sentences about yourselves.
  • A single link to an article that you’ve written, helped with or like.
  • Two ideas for tutorials you’d like to write for us.
  • Emails with an optional tutorial as attachment will get more attention from us since this means you’re serious about the gig.
  • Preferential treatment (and higher pay) given to those who can record professional quality screencasts.

Please email this information to net[at]tutsplus.com. If you’ve already emailed us about this position, please forward it to the above address, just to be sure. The previously listed one is having a few issues. Our apologies!

We get a ton of single line emails. Don’t be that person. Emails without the requisite information will be discarded.

If you can’t manage a weekly schedule and instead would like to submit every other week, that’s good with us too. Get in touch so we can work something out!

Get cracking, ladies and gents!

  • kyktommy

I am interesting on it, but i am a newbie.
i think i can write some basix tut what i have learn …. haha

  • Matt

Working around three days for $150 (and if you like work – $200) doesn’t seem worth it at all. Mainly considering the level of expertise it takes to write these tutorials. “Thanks for spending years learning to program… now here’s minimum wage.” Thanks but no thanks nettuts.

    • Sonia

Definitely agree, the pay is too little considered to the experience required

    • http://www.ssiddharth.com Siddharth
      Author

I’m pretty sure you’re looking at this the wrong way. Why would you need three full days to write a tutorial? For someone who knows what they’re doing, it shouldn’t take more than 2-3 hours — 4 at most. The hardest part is deciding what to write about, for most people. Once you have that, the other part *should* be a cake walk.

      Thanks for your interest! :)

      • Ahmed

Agree, and for me 200 is a big money in my country(Syria), it’s about three weeks of work here in Syria(a regular employ takes 300$ a month, and that’s why must Syrian works more than a one job(two at least))
i would be happy to make lessons for Nettuts but i am a newbie and steel at high school(school sucks) and i have my own concerns so i don’t have time for anything :(

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

Yeah – three days? Maybe for a Premium tut. My tutorials generally take a maximum of about 3 hours to prepare.

        Agreed

  • http://imkwaa.com Olle

Sounds awesome, incredibly well payed considering the work. I’d love it, I have the knowledge, but I doubt I’d be able to write one article per week. I think I might submit a tutorial soon regardless.

Hopefully whoever gets the gig has some ruby knowledge to lay upon us.

  • Jeff

What a ripoff. Exploitation at best.

You have thousands of people paying for premium… The low end should be 500~, the upper for great tutorials probably near 5000.

150 for a tutorial where you get all the benefits, and the deal is done? So I create the #1 tutorial that brings you hundreds of new users that signup… You’ve paid me 150 and I have to continue to submit more to receive any money?

    What a joke.

Talk about bottom feeding the top.. really.

I hope nobody takes ‘advantage’ of you taking advantage of others.

    Good luck, all the best…
Keep your stick on the ice.
    Jeff.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

      $5000 for one tutorial? haha – okay….

We’d go out of business in a month if we did that.

And who said that you have to continue submitting more articles to receive any money? If you want to up your pay scale, sure, but if you only ever submit one tut — then you’re paid the standard rate, accordingly.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

Look — if you know your stuff, you can write an article in a few hours. This amounts to about $70 per hour, for sitting at home in front of the couch, and writing about what you love.

If you require days and days to prepare an article, then you’re not ready.

    • Josue

      I smell envy hate

    • http://thedanielrichard.com Daniel

Considering that one doesn’t necessarily write exclusively (can’t write for anyone else) for Nettuts+ it’s pretty worth the time and effort writing.

  • http://www.ferdychristant.com Ferdy

I find this pay to be very low as well. I do not agree that a well-researched, well-written article not covered somewhere else already only takes 2 or 3 hours, more like a full day at least. I guess it depends on the kind of tutorials you expect, but if they are really good, unique, pioneering work, this is far below minimum wage.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

How so? Let’s say that it somehow took you 8 solid hours to write. That’s *still* $25 an hour.

To be frank, if it takes a person 24 solid hours to write a tutorial for us, we’re probably not the best fit. We’re looking for people who already have the knowledge. We just want them to put it on paper….resulting in about $66 – $100 per hour.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

And, certainly, for massive tuts, we can make special arrangements.

    • http://www.keithbluhm.com Keith

Agreed. A lot of the PHP tutorials I see on here are very poorly written as far as the logic goes, so I do actually believe they take 2-3 hours, at most. I read a lot of them and think to myself “someone got paid for this?”.

I’d love to be able to contribute, but all I have is knowledge… no previous article writing experience, etc.

  • http://www.phyowaiwin.com Phyo Wai Win

    Nice… I might give it a try. :)

  • http://www.chimply.net Dieter Bogaert

I don’t think the money is bad. 150 each week is a nice extra to have. Especially for something you like doing.
I have good knowledge of PHP, javascript & jquery, css3, … but I think the most difficult part would be to come up with a good idea each week to write about.
If the author was given a topic the week beforehand I would consider applying for the job but not like this.
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to create a form for visitors to submit topics for articles they like to know more about? Or for people to just write an article and send it to tutsplus and if it’s good enough to publish they get paid for this one article?

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

Remember – it’s $150 for the first month. Then, $200 per.

A tutorial per week? Any examples of tutorial sizes which would be accepted? Because a quick tip or a full featured article article is a huge difference.

      • A reader

So, in theory, I would be allowed to solely deliver quick tips?

  • lamis

This is a very interesting offer honestly and I would love to be part of the nettuts+ team.

Sadly I have a full time job plus uni so my time is very tight, can you accept one tutorial a month? If thats possible I will send the required information by tomorrow. thanks!

  • Dals

Nice, very nice. As someone told above, not too much money to pay for article. But it means not regular price “for work”. It’s just extra-money for hobby.
At least for me. Think I can write a series of articles about one popular PHP framework. Something like “Build your simple message board from scratch with framework”.
But I have a question: is non-american writers are allowed to be involved? I’m Ukrainian citizen and developer. So, may I write articles & receive a payments from you? Thanks.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

Yes — but our main issue is that the English has to be pitch perfect.

  • http://www.johanh.com johanH

Unnecessary to be pessimistic. $ 150 – 200 for at most 2-3 hours of work a week is not wrong. However, I think the biggest problem is that high quality ideas run out very quickly with such a high range of posts.

Nevertheless, I think it deserves a chance.

  • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way

Hey everyone — massive apologies, but, if you’ve already emailed us about this position, please forward your email to me, at net[at]tutsplus.com. The original listed email was a mistake. Sorry for the trouble!

$150 for 2-5 hours is a justifiable amount. The most difficult part—as mentioned—is thinking of what to write about! But, of course, this is why they pay $150 per tutorial!

  • http://www.codygacek.com Cody Gacek

Being a Staff Writer for Nettuts+ would be awesome. To those who say the pay is too low, you may not be realizing the other benefits beyond the money. I see it as an opportunity to inspire and educate thousands of people with each published tutorial, while also building credibility as a professional within the community.

  • tarek

Why i send my thoughts .. It’s what I have
    Perhaps this is what matters

  • Amel Almgdmi

thank you for the offer, till when it will be on ?

  • Jeff

    Jeffrey Way,

I complained earlier about the pricing being so low. You say it’s about 70 dollars an hour.

Why not incorporate an affiliate program. If someone writes a tutorial, it gets really popular and you end up getting 66 signups a day, why not pay that person a fair commission? What’s a fair % for quality writers going for these days?

Some see it as an opportunity for themselves… Well, they forget that for years to come you will be getting traffic for those tutorials (Granted, they must be quality).

And for “I smell envy hate” from Josue; I would speak to your employer like this if you were getting stiffed on your wages. As a Canadian, it’s my duty to speak up for people… You’re young, you feel invincible. One day you will realize that it’s not a bad thing to speak up for others. Look back at your ‘self’ today and realize how sad you were in life.

I will not be doing a tutorial for nettuts, but for those that are, they should be paid *fair*.

We’re talking about what is fair…

A tutorial that could possibly bring in 500+ new members is what I’m talking about. Not someone talking about “hi, this is putty tray… it works like this, i do this, oh it’s down in the bottom right corner”.

All the best Jeffrey Way, you’ve got a successful operation on your hands.. be fair to people is all i’m asking.

    • http://viruta.com.ve Argenis Ferrer

Well, I guess everybody’s got an opinion. But seriously, like so many things in life, you just have to ask yourself how much your time is worth?

It’s quite a reasonable offer for most of us, who believe it’s a fair deal for doing what we like, and getting a compensation on the side of our daily jobs.

Clearly from the comments, it’s not everyone’s cup of tee, but rarely any gig is :)

    • Craig

For myself, this gig wouldn’t be about the money though. Not many people can honestly say that, but at this point in my career I really just want to do something on the side that will allow me to creatively express myself to an audience that already exists.

For some people, like myself, that is enough. The money may be an important thing to some, but this isn’t exactly a new career opportunity for most people.

  • Tom

Do you still get paid as much for just submitting a tutorial. Not actually becoming a weekly writer?

  • w1sh

Hey Jay Way, I’d be part of the staff because I know some stuff and I’m not some greedy freak and I like learning and all that jazz, but I think I’m too rude and you hate me because I’m not smart at being good to people or talk rights. :D

  • arnold

just curious, is the pay only in paypal?

..anyway, guys I see this also a good opportunity for you to build credibilty just like Cody said.

    • http://www.ssiddharth.com Siddharth

We’re more interested in frequent writers but yes, once a month is quite ok.

  • Craig

This is a very interesting opportunity. I’ve been wanting to start my own CodeIgniter / PHP / What I Learned Today blog for a long time, but don’t have the time for regular content.

I could probably squeeze out a tutorial a week though.

Hmm.. If not though, give me a shout if you ever need an editor / proofreader for articles.

  • http://www.educsis.com/cv Edwin Orellana

Ok, I read Nettuts every time a new article comes up, I’ve been reading it for years, when it was still in diapers. Everytime I see an opportunity like this come up, I get all excited and think “one of these days I’ll be writing for them, thanks in great part to them!”. I believe nettuts is one of the greatest blogs out there, of course there are other great blogs, but nettuts has variety, has quality, etc. I hardly ever read comments, today I decided to read the comments, and honestly, I was dissapointed. I felt like asking “would you like some cheese with all that whine?”, maaan, what is wrong with you people? seriously? I don’t care how much this kind of money is in your country or mine, I don’t care if it takes you 10 minutes to write an article or tutorial, or if it takes you three days. I think that most people who wrote a comment here are so full of themselves, did you happen to come accross the article by pure chance? most of you are here because you read nettuts frequently, I think most of you are a bunch of….. let me take my breath……hypocrites, arrogants……..ignorants……divas…..who think they’re better than everyone else, who in fact have no real knowledge of things, who have no path which to follow, and worse, have no passion about what you do… that, my dear whiners, is just SAD! if you want to do something and you can only measure how much you are worth or how much you can share with others based on money, then you are not really living your life. To Nettuts, I say thank you, thank you for all these years. I don’t care if the rest of you one cell brain commenters criticize me, I always accept criticism just as long as it’s not based on ignorance or prejudice. Again nettuts, thanks. And of course I’m going to submit my article, of course I’m going to try to become a writer for Nettuts, and of course I didn’t proof read this, so this doesn’t count as my article.

    • kyktommy

      I totally agree with you.
Sharing the knowledge is the main point.

    • indidkid

Edwin Orellana that was one master comment! I’d sure count that as an article though a short one – on life!

  • SAAS

I read almost all the comments, so I agree with Edwin Orellana. I am almost a daily visitor of this blog. I have learnt lot of things from this blog, I am one of those guys who give back what he has gain from others. So I would love to be Staff Writer for net tuts. But as they are looking for Awesome Staff Writer, I guess I am not the one. I agree with few people that if a person spent time writing articles/tutorial or screecasts, he/she must get paid well. But its not only about money, you should look at the other part that lot of developers like me needs your contributions, which helps me produce quality work. Thanks NET TUTS+.

  • http://bibikova.com ben

It would help if Tuts employed an editor. That way the writer would only concentrate on putting together a tutorial and have the editor do the grammatical corrections and restructuring of sentence if need be.

    • http://support.envato.com Drew

      Hi Ben,

Jeffrey is the editor of Nettuts+ and each Tuts+ site has at least one if not more full time editors employed :)

  • Amel Almgdmi

i think, this is a job offer if you like it apply,if u don’t go on your way
why you should talk outside the road , this place is respected and always will be

    • http://bdt466.deviantart.com BDT466

      Totally agree with you Amel!

now, quick question, what is the age requirement? Because many of the users are from across the world, there are different laws for minimum age for working. So is it based upon where the person lives or where Nettuts+ is based, presumably it would be the latter for legal reasons. This is just an assumption though, could someone kindly clear it up? I personally can’t do the job, unfortunately I have no idea about css or any of that sort of stuff, but it sounds like a great opportunity for someone to take up. Cheers :D

  • http://www.bootcamp4me.com Lonnie

I love the fact that Jeff is offering this on here and not some monster.com board, but actually wanting to hire his own visitors.

The people who are complaining about “only getting $1000+” a month are usually bad employees who whine about how much they are overworked and undervalued. Even though they work “at will” and are free to leave anytime they want. Or worse.. knew the compensation factor and still took the job.. but then cry because they heard they can make X elsewhere.
Great employees (like mine) are excited about our field.. to them, its not even a job.

I have a strong feeling that some of my employees, if they could, would work for free… because we believe in our mission and impact on others.

The same for this site. Its about education… helping others with creativity and art. The tut about “create warm inviting web page” is for free! …any first time site visitor can stop by.. download the tut and never come back… Jeff and his crew understand the value in helping and teaching others. They have bills to pay.. and are certainly entitled to earn a profit, but look at the value they put out there to help the web design community..

As Tony Dungy said “Its not about me, its not about you.. its about the team”

If i had a clue as to what im doing when it comes to building a dynamic website or something worth showing … i would be all over this. But thats what class starting the 18th will help me with.

    • http://www.educsis.com Edwin

Well said Lonnie, that’s exactly what I wanted to say, but you said it with ellegance, well said. I totally agree.

  • ChrisA

For those of you complaining that this is cheap labor – it’s not. It all depends if you can do the job fast and produce excellent quality. Very few people are capable of doing this. Here is an example which may relate to a lot of you. A contractor hires you to create a simple 2 page website. You told the contractor that it will cost them $400 because you estimated that it will take 4 hours to complete the job at $100/hour. However you are able to complete the job in 1 hour so now your pay jumped up to $400/hour. The “perfectionists” or amateurs out there will work on the project for 40 hours and have their pay dwindle to $10/hour. There’s nothing wrong being a perfectionist but if you look at it from a business stand point of view, you’ve killed your profits to slave labor.

If it takes 3 hours to write a tutorial @ $150 that equates to: $50/hour. When your pay goes up to $200/tutorial and it takes you 3 hours to write a tutorial that equates to: $66.67/hour. Slave labor? Definitely not – unless they pay you in pesos.

  • Ali Khan

I think a lot of people are looking at this the wrong way. Everyones looking at $$ / Hours Spent = Reward Ratio…I disagree.

I will most probably enter this though time is a constraint at times. However lets assume I get paid $150 a week and perhaps another $200 if I did Premium..At Minimum I make $600 at the upperlevel about $1400.

Now thats base. No one here is looking at the reputational gain. If you are featured as an author and put that on your resume its priceless. That opens your doors to significant jobs. It shows communication abiilty (A must in management), professional expertises (senior level requirement), community out reach, active knowledge gain and tangible reference.

If I did this I would have it high on my resume and make it a factor in negotiations of benefits, salary and so forth. Any company who didn’t think highly of an Employee ranked on a high end tech blog is not a company I’d want to work with. Those that did understand the significance would give appropriate pay.

Don’t be greedy. Don’t think short term.

Any one here claiming to be a proper Architect, Developer or Engineer and whine about short term gain would be someone I’d have serious concern of. If you can’t think long term on this how could you on any large scale project with a long life span?
