Which Tuts+ Site Should We Launch Next?

We’re planning our next few Tuts+ sites, and would love your opinion and advice on which topics you think we should cover next! We’d be really grateful if you could take a minute to answer our quick poll and share your thoughts…

Have Your Say

We’ve been considering lots of different ideas for our next Tuts+ sites over the past few weeks, and wanted to also ask the opinion of our awesome community!

A selection of different concepts are included in the poll to the right, along with the option for you to submit your own ideas as well.

The important thing to note is that these are just ideas. Some of these are close to making our final cut, and others aren’t… We’d love to hear what you think, to help guide our decision.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your suggestion — I can’t wait to see what you have to say!

Win a 6-Month Tuts+ Premium Membership

Our poll will be running for the next couple of weeks, and we’ll be choosing one respondent at random to receive a six-month Tuts+ Premium membership!

To be entered into the giveaway, just leave a comment on this post to go into a bit more detail about your site suggestion. We’ll choose one comment at random to win the Tuts+ Premium membership when the poll ends.

Best of luck!

I chose, finance because I get confused when people are talking about things related to stock exchanges, ipos, debt ratio etc. So knowledge of how to invest your money for retirement would be great.

  • Memo

I’m all for gamedevtuts+, with the emergence of Web technologies, game development can be a cool way to learn new stuff and having fun at the same time. I’m not talking about crazy AAA title or MMORPGs a was thinking more 2d, isometric or platform stuff.

    thanks.

  • http://www.umarjadoon.com Umar

I would go with Mathtuts+, that would be incredibly useful for a lot of people!

  • Marc Brigham

I chose video game development because I think more people would like to know how to make games than almost anything else on that list. Video game development is very popular and would help out the video game industry if more people knew how to develop games.

I am interested in Writingtuts+. There are a very few writing tutorial site’s and having a tuts+ writingsite should be really nice.

You should talk there about how to write a good article, how people read articles, how you get the focus of your readers, how people rember your article, ect.

But some typography tips are also needed. What’s the optimal line-height, font-size, ect. You can please it there I think.

    • http://wouterj.nl Wouter J

EDIT: I filled in a wrong email address, this is the right one.

    • http://grinfish.com/blog sean

      I also vote for typographytuts+

      :)

  • Jermaine

Techtuts+ becuase I can never keep up with the changes, and when I do find out about something im a few months late

  • Hein Zaw Htet

I vote for Writingtuts+. In this site, you should write about Tutorials written, article written and so on…

  • http://tommybrunn.com Tommy Brunn

I’d love to see a Gamedevtuts+, because there’s very little GOOD writing on the subject. There’s plenty of material out there, but none as well written and formatted as the content that you can find on the tuts+ network. I’d love to see more theoretical articles as well. So, for example, instead of explaining how you get a ball to bounce in Unity3d, I’d like to see articles about how you (mathematically) detect a collision between a sphere and a pyramid, or how you calculate if a point is in view of a sensor – separately from any specific toolkit or language (although you could of course demonstrate it in Javascript, Python or whatever).

  • mike

I think freelance tuts+ because of all the opportunities it provides. You could definitely do something with contracts for a tutorial, pricing, where to find jobs, making a reoccurring income with freelancing and probably lots of other topics that can be covered as well.

    • Hein Zaw Htet

I think Envato doesn’t need site for Freelance. Because they have FreelanceSwitch for it.

    • http://wouterj.nl Wouter J

I agree with Hein Zaw Htet and in my opinion a tuts+ site needs to be a blog and not a ‘get jobs’ website. It needs to tell you something you want to know.

    • Marcel Shields

+1 for freelancetuts. Topics like how to start an LLC, or on self employment tax, or techniques on getting new clients would be good.

  • Tiago Duarte

I voted for Crafttuts+, as it would be pretty nice having something else other than the “usual work-related stuff”.

DYI articles would be pretty useful and fun!

    PS: Why freelancetuts+? There’s already http://freelanceswitch.com/

  • Sergey

I would love to see Envato expanding on Agile software development content (productivitytuts+ or maybe agiledevtuts+ ? )
There are so many potential subjects to learn and to teach:

Version Control & all related to that
Pair Programming & all related to that
    Automation
    TDD & BDD
    Continuous integration & Continuous delivery
    Time management
How to keep “Truck number” as high as possible
Managing the team and techniques to keep team in shape
    etc. etc. etc.

  • Kris

Businesstuts would be great, because most of us are working freelance and it would help a lot.

  • http://charliehield.com Charlie Hield

I would love to see ArduinoTuts+. I’ve been getting into some fun Arduino projects at work, and would love to keep learning more.

  • http://www.sivocha.com David

I want to see finance tuts or Freelance tuts.
A lot of the folks that come here are either freelancers or interested in a career in it. And I know you have a lot of stuff covered with Freelance switch, but some in depth tutorials would be really nice, on how to set up stuff, deal with Tax etc

  • http://realita.org Martin

gamedev tuts i hope, cant wait :)

  • http://bradself.com Brad

How about Drupaltuts? I’m mainly a WordPress developer and WPtuts has been amazing for me since it launched. I know there are a lot of die hard Drupal fans out there and I’ve had a few Drupal projects come in lately so having some quality tuts that focus on specific issues would be great.

If not Drupal than Game Dev seems like it’d be a great idea as well. Can I have two votes?

    • Matt

Drupal is the worst thing on the planet. There… I said it! Does that make me a bad person?

  • http://tahaasadullah.com Taha M. Asadullah

    Hi,
There are many google technologies such as appengine, android, chrome etc. It would be great if you can create a dedicated section for that. Google Technology User Group (GTUG) members could be invited to write about them and share their expertise.
    Best wishes,

  • http://www.techjot.com TechJot

My vote is for BusinessTuts+ and the reason for my vote is that there are ton of business/startup information around the web but it’s mostly sporadic and there is not a consolidated site that covers everything from the vision, inspiration to seeding, funding to $$$$$$ in revenues…all in a nicely blended way the Tuts+ sites are pretty familiar in presenting. Could be a one-stop site for everything related to startups and business intricacies.

  • Nathan Pointer

Id love to see Envato branch out into some new territory – sciencetuts plz!

  • Jinxed

I vote for gamedev tuts (I might even contribute :). I’m also a regular reader on nettuts, but what I’m really missing is more advanced theory and concepts or programming techniques (that are followed by real life applications), than just bunch of : “Essentials of this javascript library”, “Basics of that javascript library”, “beginners this and that”, “meet this library”, “let’s customise terminal”.

To be frank, recent articles are being more like “quick tips” than the real deal, something like creating an animated bar graph really requires imagination to build, such thing won’t help those people with no imagination, neither it’ll help to those who have imagination.

Sorry about this little runt, I didn’t mean to offend anyone (in case someone is feeling offended) I just wanted to give my opinion since this is a poll like post.

  • http://whiteboard.is Jonathan Cutrell

I’d love to see DIYTuts. The DIY community is a group of devoted and intelligent people with their hands in a lot of different projects and ideas. From crafts and handmade products to things like Arduino and smart-home, there’s plenty of subject matter and not many good tutorial-based sites (other than something like Instructables). It’d be nice to see high-quality content in this arena in a centralized location.

  • Jesus Bejarano

Writingtuts+ would the best choice, since as we developers who came to this site and you asking us our opinion , i would say that some of the skills that i developers often lack and need is a good writing material and in the present i believe that being a good writer is a well preise skill as a developer.

Haha you see what i mean (how bad a writer i am). I NEED WRITINGTUTS+!!!!XD

  • madhes

I love to see a joomla tutsplus and drupal tutsplus.

Hey Everyone — Thank you for your comments and thoughts so far. We’re taking them all on board!

  • http://www.dineshthedesigner.com dinesh kumar

I would Techtuts+, since there is no mark of general technology things in Tuts+. So we would have that covered if we start one :)

  • tom

how about a devtuts+ a site where you learn to write code for non webpages or phones. python, java,c++
or servertuts+ for learning windows 2008 or apache
or storetuts+ running building an on line store through different cms
    or opensourcetuts+
or fontstuts+ creation and use of fonts – might be useful now with @font-face
or hardwaretuts+ how to build your own computer
    or networkingtuts+
    sqltuts+

  • http://sdbwebsolutions.com Serg

    Hi there!

As potential web developers, watching how fast MVC frameworks and renewed programming languages travel the highways these days, so I’m thinking about these sites:

    data.tutplus.com

    &

    opensource.tutplus.com

We all could benefit from discussing & putting in practice “real working projects” to definitively take these fields from development to production stages.

    Thank you!

  • Paul Theunis

    Definately GameTuts.

It’s such a hard topic to get into.
i mean there is programming and there is game programming.
Even though gameprogramming would require alot of mathTuts.

GameTuts would be a nice way to make the step into that world a little easier.

  • jose D

I suggested indesigntuts+. With the new version out, I’m sure there’s many hidden features.

  • Justin Goltermann

Gamedev tuts would be perfect for me, covering not so much specific problems or solutions in particular languages but rather game development and game design problems and solutions, algorithms, etc.

  • Nemo

    FreelanceTuts+, definetly!
A place where freelancers can find interesting advices about how to start that kind of job, how and when charge more or less.
    That would be useful!

  • http://benjaminbrandt.com/ Ben Brandt

Writingtuts+!!! We spend a lot of time talking about how to create sites and blogs, but don’t spend enough time learning how to create the content that goes on them!

Would love to learn more about the craft of writing!

  • John H

    Techtuts+!

  • Anonymous

    frleelancer+ and android+
    dats two i needed

  • http://czent.com/ Deb

Tutstuts+ – focusing on how to make tuts sites in 2012 :D

Although I voted for productivitytuts I would like to see most of the options on the polldaddy list, they all sound good.

    • http://davidappleyard.net David Appleyard

      Great idea :-)

  • verpixelt

I voted for Mactuts coz i remember how long it took to know windows rly well. So maybe Softwaretips, OSX based configurations, articles and tuts about setting up, hidden gems, etc. I think u could easily
fill a site with such content.

    bet regards

  • Preston

I voted ‘Other’ for Ecommerce Tuts.

The industry has been exploding, and as I’ve been working in web dev/design in the ecommerce world for awhile now, it’s become increasingly apparent that there are many devs/designers that don’t take into account the fact that these sites are meant to one thing… sell stuff.

I see too many designs that aren’t centered around this fact and there are a ton of specifics to ecommerce that don’t happen in other areas of web design/dev.

In my daily job, I don’t just write code and make things. I have to learn fundamentals of shipping, tax rules, payment processors, third-party order manager APIs, social networking tactics, etc. These subjects are reliant on logistics more than development, so it makes sense to me to have a specific section covering these topics.

  • https://github.com/js-coder Florian

    Gamedevtuts+ would be epic. :)
It’d be interesting to see the results of the survey.

  • David M

I think an APItuts+ would be a great option. Helping individuals to get a better understanding of the various api’s that are available and how to use them could be beneficial. (i.e. facebook, twitter, foursquare, dropbox, pintrest etc…)

  • http://twitter.com/anttti Antti

    Gamedevtuts of course!

  • Sreejith K

No doubt Its Gamedevtuts.. and its pointing to online web gaming..

  • http://www.cssjunction.com Shekhar

    SEOTut+,

SEO, after all this is what makes you stand in the market, after your skills. Nobody knows whether you’re there or not. SEO helps us to be in the fore front.

I haven’t found any website that provides SEO learning as Tuts+ sites does in any other field. Like PSDTuts+ one of the best in world to learn/master in Photoshop. Similarly I would suggest to start SEOTuts+.

  • http://arekmytych.com Arek

Of course it should be Crafttuts+, internet is overloaded with all the rest of your propositions. Also there is noticeable tendency for people to become craftsmen, to produce real, tangible things, not digital.

  • Eric Windham

GameDev for sure. Not enough information out there on how to get started. Or I’m looking in the wrong places. Either way, a tuts site on the subject would be easy to find and a great resource for premium subscribers.

  • http://andrewburgess.ca Andrew Burgess

Pretty sure I’ll be the only vote for Mathtuts+ :)

  • howldev

I give my vote to Writingtuts+! I think the web has changed the rules of writing, so this section would become very interesting. There’s a lot of people that don’t even realize that a text is more understandable if broken up into more “learning” units.. With the ecosystem of bloggers, microbloggers, tutorial-writer this site would be surely appreciated

  • http://laranzjoe.blogspot.com lawrence77

    i voted ‘others’

dotnettuts+ which cover every bit of the dotnet framework, sqlserver, ado.net, wcf, wpf, silverlight, etc., becaz nettuts is just becomes jstuts+ nowadays ;)

cmstuts+ which cover every cms from wordpress, drupal, joomla, dotnetblogengine, dotnetnuke etc., :D

where is Herbtuts+ in options :D

  • Ryan

I would love to see WritingTuts+. Us techies put a lot of effort into keeping up with recent developments in our field, but many of us haven’t taken the time to develop skills that might not necessarily be considered “in our wheelhouse.” Getting better at your craft means taking a good look at all aspects of what you do and frankly I think writing is one area that gets overlooked fairly often. WritingTuts+ would definitely help people, especially those of us that want to share what we’ve learned as tutorials, on our blog, etc.

  • http://alicia.wilkersons.us Alicia

Writingtuts+ is my choice. I think that this even if it’s focusing on blog writing or writing in general can help everyone who currently views your tuts pages plus pull in the not so tech oriented people who might purchase more of your other tuts things because they are things they’ve always wanted to learn but never actually had the time to do.

We see writing everywhere, it’s going to stay everywhere unless we all learn to communicate telepathically, but imagine how noisy that would be hehe.

  • Joe

I choose writing, cause those are abilities that almost everyone of us needs for their work
