Which Tuts+ Site Should We Launch Next?

Which Tuts+ Site Should We Launch Next?

We’re planning our next few Tuts+ sites, and would love your opinion and advice on which topics you think we should cover next! We’d be really grateful if you could take a minute to answer our quick poll and share your thoughts…

Have Your Say

We’ve been considering lots of different ideas for our next Tuts+ sites over the past few weeks, and wanted to also ask the opinion of our awesome community!

A selection of different concepts are included in the poll to the right, along with the option for you to submit your own ideas as well.

The important thing to note is that these are just ideas. Some of these are close to making our final cut, and others aren’t… We’d love to hear what you think, to help guide our decision.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your suggestion — I can’t wait to see what you have to say!

Win a 6-Month Tuts+ Premium Membership

Our poll will be running for the next couple of weeks, and we’ll be choosing one respondent at random to receive a six-month Tuts+ Premium membership!

To be entered into the giveaway, just leave a comment on this post to go into a bit more detail about your site suggestion. We’ll choose one comment at random to win the Tuts+ Premium membership when the poll ends.

Best of luck!

Computer Science Tuts – Learning to develop for the web, mobile devices, apps, etc is great and can lead to an awesome career, but not all developers have a CS degree which is sometimes necessary. This tuts site would be great to fill in those gaps for those looking for a career in programming and may not have the time or money to go back to college and get the degree. Help fill in that gap!

  • oemran

    Yiiframework tuts

  • Darshana

    AndroidDevTuts

  • Elena

Would like some advice for business and productivity to make the most of our time and skillls. What should one charge based on experience and geographical area. The game dev tuts page would be great too.
Thank you for all the great tutorials!

  • kankaro

Hopefully it would be a gamedevtuts+… how i wish also you can lunch a linuxtuts+

  • Ariunbold

How about CreativityTuts+? I voted for the CraftTuts+

  • Richard

I would like to see something like frameworkstuts+ to cover all types of frameworks out there but also I like to get more into specific language tuts such as PythonTuts+ or PerlTuts+.

  • http://blaxus.net David D’hont

From a logical point of view. I think the best bet is GameDevTuts+

Think about it. Game Engines, 3d Software, Video and Photo editing software, and it gives great potential for variety, computers and technology are always evolving. So that keeps the ball rolling.

And I have to disagree with people saying things like “FrameworkTuts+” and “SEOTuts+”. What nonsense is this? They all fit within the category of NetTuts+.

All Envato needs to do is find people to dedicate making content for it. I mean, Javascript and jQuery are a world on it’s own as well, but they are also just Web Development and that’s exactly why they are all on NetTuts+

My vote went to GameDevTuts+, and ultimately, I couldn’t care what you guys produce. As long as it’s useful I’ll continue to come reading it. Just don’t go narrow like “FrameworkTuts+”. They not worthy enough for their own network. You still have categories within NetTuts+ where they fit right in.

The same goes for WordPressTuts+. Why only WordPress? This could easily be expanded to multiple Content Management Systems, and they could easily be sub categorized.

Not to mention, why give Scale & Caching, or WP 101 it’s own categories. These are Course or Series worthy. Why do you create an entire category for these?

It seems there are some people in the network that don’t really know what they are doing. I know It sounds rude, but I’m merely giving feedback. Take it in, and improve. No one gets things right the first time. Just learn from the mistakes that were made.

    • Michael Reid

      David,

What you’re saying is true to a degree, but I have to disagree with you on a few key points…

“… things like FrameworkTuts+ and SEOTuts+. What nonsense is this? They all fit within the category of NetTuts+.”

Strictly speaking, so does WPTuts+, but that didn’t stop them from launching that last year. The same thing happened when StackOverflow started branching off and creating several SE sites, many of which had a lot of overlap. It all boils down to the fact that while a catch-all generic site like Nettuts+ is great for having everything you need under one roof, sometimes it helps to build a smaller and more isolated community which has the ability to focus on one particular subject.

As far as the actual poll is concerned, I agree that GameDevTuts+ makes the most sense as far as being on topic for this site.

FreelanceTuts+ doesn’t make too much sense, unless they were considering rolling it into FreelanceSwitch. Otherwise, it seems like it would be too much duplicate content.

I personally voted for HealthTuts+, because I am very passionate about health and fitness. For those who think it has no relation to the Envato network, consider that as people who make our living sitting at a computer all day (not to mention tv/games afterward) it is very relevant for us to also learn how to stay fit and healthy. Not to mention the fact that being active and working out can boost your energy and productivity. Yeah, it’s a stretch to justify it, but the fact that HealthTuts+ is even on the list means there’s at least one other person (heck, maybe even two) that agrees with me.

      • http://blaxus.net David

In regard to HealthTuts+ I have nothing against it. I lost a lot of weight and ever since been living more healthy, so I am very aware of how this is a valuable asset. But that does not take away from the fact that these are not tutorials.

They are more so editorials and Blog Posts such as Freelanceswitch. Which it would probably be a better idea to keep these blogs separate. After all, they are all part of Envato anyway.

It’s just that from my point of view, I don’t really need that anymore. I might be interested in writing for them, but in regard to reading, they have nothing to offer me that I do not already know. That’s why I chose GameDevTuts+ but that is simply a personal choice.

      • Michael Reid

It’s an interesting take, but I’d argue that Healthtuts+ would indeed have tutorials, and not just editorials like you suggested.

Tutorials are simply the conveyance of information from the author to the reader; that information could be instructions to perform a task (how to create a web form) or it could teach a topic (how javascript closures work), or it could teach a much more abstract topic (how to structure an OOP program). No matter what, though, it all boils down to teaching the reader something.

Health is a science, and as a result it most certainly has the capacity for being taught it in the strictly tutorial sense. Just like programming, Healthtuts+ could have instructions (how to accurately calculate your basal metabolic rate), topics (how hypertrophy works), and abstract topics (how to structure a diet plan). Additionally, as you said it could also have editorial style articles, but this is no different than any other Envato site. Nettuts+ covers a new JS framework and compares its pros/cons to existing ones; Healthtuts+ covers a strength training program and compares its pros/cons to existing ones.

Anyways, that’s just my two cents. The very fact that they’re expanding Envato in the first place makes me happy; happening to chose a site that I will use would just be icing on the cake XD.

Thanks for your feedback, David. I agree that we could certainly do a better job of organising and categorising content. The next version of the site will make huge improvements in this area!

      • http://blaxus.net/ David D’hont

You don’t have anything to apologize for. And definitively nothing to prove. The Envato is by far the most passionate company providing the best learning platforms I have seen in the last few years.

And I think it’s great you guys want to expand into more areas.
I just wanted to give some feedback wherever I can.

  • http://shawnbeelman.com Shawn

Would like to see tuts on freelancing — best practices, pitfalls, legal issues, etc…

  • Kaniadona

    Gamedevtuts+, Frameworktuts+, Linuxtuts+, Opensourcetuts+

  • http://www.mediabeast.co.nz Myles

    Mactuts+ !!!!

This would be very helpful especially with all the hype around Apple at the moment!

I would love to see stuff like teaching theses old windows web developers who give mac’s sh#t when really there missing out.

My fingers are crossed for this one!

  • Edi Schlechtinger

I would also like to see frameworktuts+ with focusing on realtime web frameworks. This will be the future of the web.

  • http://designerves.com Hisman

    Vote for gamedevtuts+ !!

  • david

GameDevTuts would be extremely empowering to bring my front end development know how to the gaming world. Thanks!

  • eric

I wrote in admintuts+. Lets start sharing the tutsplus love for the Servern, network Administrators and DBA’s

  • http://twitter.com/guidt Guilherme Barbosa

Gamestuts+. Games are a whole different world. With this site we could leave Activetuts+ for browser apps, Mobiletuts+ only for mobile apps and Gamestuts+ to teach Unity, UDK and so on.
    This would be great!

  • http://noobcode.blogspot.in Idrish

gametuts+ ofcourse. Gaming is one industry which will always grow, and building games for smartphones, desktops and gaming console will be fun.

  • Kundan

    Productivitytuts+ would be my choice.
I would like to learn how we can be more productive by changing the way we do our work, managing things and extracting some time for ourselves as we need that.

Hopefully any new tuts+ would be as good as current tuts+ series.

    cheers :)

  • Albert

I choose mathtuts because it would be fun to see math tutorials envato style, but for more our industry related I’d like to see a drupaltuts as there is already one for wordpress and I disagree with a framework tuts, I don’t see the point as there are plenty tuts on here and on webdesigntuts, no need for a separate site dedicated to it.

  • http://www.educsis.com Edwin

    Dev games def. ;)

  • Kris

    It should be fireworkstuts+ !

  • Wade Du Preez

I reckon something along the lines of programming.tutsplus.com. You have web design tuts, nettuts which is development for the web, what about other programming languages used for web/desktop Perl/Python/Objective-C/Java etc

  • IJas

Frameworktuts+ !!! Before going beyond web development, Please fulfill this one :). Also I recommend ecommercetuts+ .. and errortuts+ for general errors we make during development.

    • john

Those are quite possibly the worst suggestions in the entire thread

  • OliverG

I’d like to see a Programmingtuts+ for the reason that programming basics and its other concepts go hand to hand with web development. I’d like to learn how to code for example: Java, C++, Python and other languages like that.

  • Akos

What about Websectuts+ !!! A site about comprehensive web security and best pratices.

  • Nirav Gandhi

    NodeTutsPlus !
A tutsplus site dedicated entirely to Node.js and its framework.
There have been a few mediums such as howtonode and others. But, they are diveresely scattered.
Integrating everything on a single board in a logical fashion would be awesome!

  • http://www.finansaldenklem.com Umur

    Financetuts could be awesome !!

  • http://www.e-solns.com Abdulaziz

I recomend freelancetuts+ , something to cover all there is to cover about freelancing, like how to start out as a freelancer, how to become a successfull freelancer, getting paid and all the other stuff . :-)

  • Jonny

Health Tuts would be great. I’m 25 and already considering a a career that involves less sitting.

  • Michael

Most of these already exist in some form or shape in the envato group.

I think gamedev would be a logical choice because you could tie together all sorts of technologies already available in the tuts range of sites. It could use from and contribute to the existing tuts sites.

On the other hand, a side step like sience or math would open doors to a new side of the development process and still fit wtih the rest of the tuts sites.

    Or maybe guitartutsplus :)

  • http://www.ryanmelnikas.co.cc Ryan

We must look at this from a business point of view. What topic is broad enough to allow great diversity of content as well as targeting a specific type of reader that will keep the reader returning to the site.

I believe something such as Businesstuts+ would be a great edition to the envato family as all areas thus far can be incorporated into any business, it would allow for specific business style tutorials to become available and would allow for envato to open the door and target other potential readers on the web to read quality business tutorials. While consequently displaying other sites to these new readers that may peak their interest.
This may in turn lead to a marketplace addition to target businesses and the resources they need directly such as Invoice or Letterhead templates and so on.

  • http://www.PintarKomputer.net kade

i prefer Techtuts+. We need to know lates technology and how it can help our works.

  • http://www.danieldiazsuarez.com Daniel

GameDevTuts+ without a doubt!, Indie games are becoming extremely popular, and indie developing is getting easier with a lot of new tools to develop new games, but it’s getting harder and harder to learn all the new frameworks and tools that keep appearing, so a new Tuts+ about Game Developing could be awesome!

  • http://rajeshpillai.tekacademy.com Rajesh Pillai

My order of preference MathTuts+, gamedevtuts+.

  • sandro abuel

I would like to see productivitytuts like what Jeffrey way does on quick tuts this, tuts should have those tips and tricks on how to be more productive, the fastest way to do things,

    Mathtuts would also be good

  • Ben

I would maybe look at sites such as stack exchange and see what there most popular site is and then use their stats to make a decision.

Personally I feel you don’t need a new tuts+ site, you are doing a splendid job as is and you seem to have covered everything which is useful to be honest. You don’t want to go ahead creating tons of sites if their is no following for them.

I would look into doing something such as; providing a mobile alternative for the tuts+ sites or the tuts+ premium sites. Or gamifying the tuts premium site. I bloody love my tuts+ premium account and I feel the content contained is the best on the web, but I use it far more often on my Iphone and I get frustrated downloading the full desktop version.

  • Michael Kimathi

I think the next interest goes to cloud computing therefore grid computing tuts, cloud computing tuts and networktuts would be great.

  • http://luc.at luc

i’d like to see more freelancer stories.

  • Tomer

I offerred APITuts+, there are so many webservices API’s out there that I think it deserves a site of it’s own which will show how to use it in real life cases.

  • Adam Turner

I would like to see a mactuts type site added. It could show you the latest tips and tricks for all the latest software.

In many of the Mac magazines this is a very large section and thus, if it’s already popular in the magazines why not bring it to the web? I know it’s been done, but I still believe it will be the most popular in a growing Mac market.

We have to look at this from a monetary point of view, let’s say compared to a GameDevTuts site.

There will always be more people wanting to know “how do I use all the latest mountain lion features?” than “SDL event handling?”.

  • Carlos

Gamestuts+. I would like to see something like Cross-OS platforms development Crossplatformtuts+

  • Alex

    I would like to see Freelancetuts+ :)

    Congratulations for the site!

    Cheers!

  • Andrei

Businesstuts+ will be great because there are technicians running their own mini-business. Professional advices in business are always welcome.

  • http://www.ashclarke.com Ash Clarke

Voted for game dev tuts. The mobile app business is booming and this is a clear way to go. HTML5 games are also on the rise.

  • http://strom-im-zoo.de Thomas Apfelbacher

    I prefer productivitytuts.

  • Barsum

I would like to see a tuts-size dedicated to the making of video – in Premiere, Ulead Videostudio etc.

  • Isabel

It would be interesting to have more information about freelancer’s job

  • John

What Envato needs to do is create a new payment scheme.

The web DESIGN tutorials are rarely above mediocre. Top quality professionals just aren’t willing to do it for the rate that Envato pay. It’s like $200 or something.

That’s why we have all these “snippet-y” web design tutorial. Bits and pieces that don’t join together at all. You can’t design like that. It’s all gimmicky. Buttons here. Nav there. People need tutorials on the principles and foundations of good design. Not just the finishing touches.

    My 2c

  • Ven

    Voted for Businesstuts+

  • EPI el Anónimo

I actually voted for Gamedevtuts+. I always wanted to learn how to produce my own videogames and there aren’t any good tutorals on the internet.
