Why I’m So Excited About the New Tuts+ Premium

Hey, guys! For the last several months, I’ve had the pleasure of helping out, top-secret, on the relaunch of Tuts+ Premium. After months of work, it’s out in the wild! If you have a second, let me know show you what’s new.

Massive Redesign

We’ll be the first to admit that the old layout was in huge need of revision. That’s why we hired the incredibly talented Orman Clark to work on a new, updated layout. I think it turned out wonderfully.

Courses!

I’m a huge fan of taking a skill, and breaking it down as much as possible into bits and pieces that can easily be consumed. Ten minutes a day, and, at the end of the month, you’ve learned a new technology. That’s what our new courses are for!

We’ve launched with five massively in depth courses, and will continue adding more at a rate of around three per month. Here’s a few that will appeal specifically to you guys:

  • CSS3 Essentials – In this course, we’ll cover the essentials of what you absolutely must know about CSS3. This means we’ll review the basics, like border-radius and box-shadow; but, we’ll also work our way up to more advanced techniques, such as using animations to add flair to your designs.
  • 30 Days to Your First Website Design – Ready to design your first website but not sure how to start? Ian Yates, Editor of Webdesigntuts+ and veteran web designer, walks you through every step of getting your first web design up and running. From the planning stages up until the pages go live, you’ll get expert guidance on how to make sure your first design gets done… and done right.
  • 30 Days to Learn HTML and CSS – Even if your goal is not to become a web designer, learning HTML and CSS can be an amazing tool to have in your skill-set – both in the workplace, and at home. If this has been on your to-do list for some time, why don’t you take thirty days and join me? Give me around ten minutes every day, and I’ll teach you the essentials of HTML and CSS. And don’t worry…we start at the beginning!
  • Create Killer Build Scripts with Phing – In this 12-part Premium screencast course, I’m going to teach you exactly how to work with the popular build script tool, Phing. Phing allows us to automate so many of the things we do manually for each project, such as compressing and concatenating code, FTPing files, and pushing projects to GitHub. When you’re ready to dig in, just push play!

Also in the queue are courses on HTML5, WordPress Plugin Development, Professional Screencasting, and much more!

…And, if you have a question about a lesson in a particular course, just head over to the Tuts+ Premium forums to discuss it with your fellow members and the course instructor.

eBooks

We’ve worked with Rockable Press and Smashing Magazine to provide their respective catalogs of eBooks free to all Premium members. That’s hundreds upon hundreds of dollars worth of eBooks for $19 a month. Here’s a handful that you might enjoy:

Over 700 Exclusive Tutorials

In addition to the newly added courses and eBooks, we still have our insanely huge library of exclusive Premium tutorials. At the time of this writing, Tuts+ Premium contains over 700, including these:

  • Next Generation JavaScript with AMD and RequireJS – I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for better ways to organize my JavaScript. Recently (only a week or so ago), I’ve discovered what seems to be the best pattern yet. In this tutorial, I’ll introduce you to AMD: Asynchronous Module Definition and RequireJS. Hang on tight; it’ll be a wild ride!
  • The Magic of WordPress Custom Post Types – In this in depth video tutorial, I’ll teach you how to use custom post types, taxonomies, and meta boxes to extend your WordPress application into CMS-like territory.
  • A Massive Guide to Custom Theming jQuery UI Widgets – jQuery UI is an open source library of interface components that features interactions, animation effects and ready-to-use widgets. jQuery UI is based on the jQuery JavaScript library and is themeable, which makes integrating jQuery UI easy for developers of any skill level to integrate into their web pages and applications.
  • Build your Own JavaScript Library – Over the course of the past few years, the JavaScript community has exploded exponentially. It it’s safe to assume that libraries are the primary reason we’ve seen such astonishing growth. Thanks to these libraries, the differences between the popular browsers are minimized, making cross-browser development much easier than it used to be.
  • How to Build a Custom S3 Uploader – Ever wondered how to create a form that can upload multiple files directly to your desired S3 bucket? While tools like S3Fox and Transmit certainly get the job done quite well, sometimes we need a simpler, one-click interface for our clients. We’ll build one today!

    For $19 – It’s Worth It

After listening to all of the input from our users, we think we’ve produced an exceptional Version Two of Tuts+ Premium. I hope you agree! If you sign up, come say hi in our forums!

Please Peter, don’t give them ideas to raise their price. I’m thankful that their are still people who are generous enough to keep their prices at affordable levels.

      I’m so excited too!
Design is great, courses are perfect simple & easy to follow :-)

I was surprised when I saw the new amazing design and new features and even still I can’t belive that this is running on wordpress :-o !!!

Thanks for your hard work :-)
I’m so grateful to be here.

      • http://skelliewag.org Skellie

We often can’t believe it’s running on WordPress either… our WP dev Derek Herman is crazy talented! I just need to convince him to make a course :).

        • http://valendesigns.com Derek Herman

It was the most challenging build I ever done with WP, totally unique functionality compared to all the other sites Collis has me code up, a lot of fun! I’m still surprised I was able to get all the functionality requested into a WP theme. Had to do some creative coding, to say the least.

A course on advanced WP development would be awesome. However, I’m a terrible teacher and half the time I have no idea how I do some of the things I do. LMAO!

    • Spreng

But now it’s not the price of a pizza! ;)

      • Ivor

Yeah but it’s still 50¢ per day I think is crazy cheap. It definitely worth every penny! :D

Where I live, a specialty pizza goes for $19.99. :)

        • http://printreliable.webs.com Oliver

Just as I was going to get a premium account, back when it was $9.00 or so, you guys had the registration page down for maintenance (new layout). I used to like how you could choose which areas to become a premium member on. Although it is great content (tutorials, screen casts, e-books), not everyone decides to study all different areas in which you guys have tutorials available. I’m a poor student who wants to get into web development and although I don’t have time nor can afford it yet, I hope to become a premium member in the future.

          wat kind of pizzaa!!!!?:D

    • Vinicius Dallacqua

It definitely worth the money invested. I’ve got to say, I have been a tuts plus member for over an year now and I’m definitely upgrading to get the extra advantages of the new plans. Congratulations guys and keep up the good work.

    • Mario

      Excellent!

One question though. Are you guys going to have free premium tutorials every now and then like you did with the “30 Days to Learn HTML and CSS” tutorial?

Or was that a one time only/marketing strategy? :P (Cause if it was, then good work, I’m already looking for coins under my sofa cushions)

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

I don’t expect us to release more free courses (they’re rather expensive to organize). But each course will always have a handful of free lessons.

    • Rich

As for the looks it looks a lot better and I would have subscribed again but not with the new pricing structure and price hike.

What happened to the $9 Monthly, $22 Quarterly and $79 Yearly?

      Now it’s $19 Monthly or $180 Yearly :(

We decided that it was worth the bump if we could also offer a catalog of ebooks and courses.

        • http://greg-j.com Greg Johnson

          Sadly, I disagree.

More power to you guys for all the money you’re making off of other peoples work. I only wish I had thought of it…

    • David

I’m still going to HS for some years and enjoy web development and design very much. What about making a lower price for HS students?
I think education is very important and would like to buy a premium membership, but 180$ are just too much for something that’s just a big hobby right now.

    • Mohamed

Congrats! Any plans to have mobile development courses with Corona SDK and more tutorials on Drupal?

    • http://www.maiconweb.com Maicon Sobczak

Very beautiful and well made project. Success for you guys.

    • http://philohermans.com Philo

The new design looks awesome! I don’t think you can get high quality education like this anywhere else for just $19!

    • http://www.seven27creative.com Brian Jones

Fantastic job guys, and the price is very well worth it. Not only with the premium content – but adding the E Books into the mix is definitely an added incentive. Keep up the great job, and I am happy to say as being self taught, Envato has made my progression possible!

    • Daniel Israel

Great design! However, I did like the old front page where I could see the latest entries on *ALL* the tuts sites. Hopefully something like that is in the works! ;)

    • James Gorman

I disagree with the price increase. Don’t bite my head off (Jeffrey), because I am not implying that it is not worth $19, but the ten dollar increase takes it from an impulse buy to something a person needs to budget. Nine dollars was a great price point. It really stood out among competitors such as ThinkVitamin(treehouse) and Lynda. Now it is too close to Lynda, which I believe is more robust (Lynda’s entire library vs Tuts+ premium).

I love the content here at Tuts+ and have been an off and on premium member. As a consumer, however, I obviously dislike price increases and believe you’ll see a Netflix-esq response. If somebody wants the books let him or her buy the books, otherwise keep the price at $9 and give people more value for their money. Hopefully there will be opportunities and special offers to lock in a discounted rate. Regardless, best of luck (seriously) and keep up the good work!

      • John

I couldn’t agree more! I was considering it until I saw the price increase. Wish you guys luck though!

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

I think it boils down to the idea that we *wanted* to offer courses and ebook. There’s no way to do that without increasing the price a smidge.

Considering that some single courses around the web sell for $50+, getting our entire catalog for $19 is a good deal in my opinion.

        It’s not like we’re not asking $1000 for a two-day online conference. Just $19.

        • James Gorman

          Jeffrey, from the horses mouth…
          ————
“With pricing on this level, though, you can be assured that you’ve successfully priced yourself beyond the mass market. If that’s your choice, then excellent. You’ll certainly have corporate buyers…and, of course, the buyers who don’t know any better. But ask yourself this – and this is an important one: would you rather sell 20 licenses of a $200 theme, or 200 of a $20 theme? Your ultimate compensation is identical in both situations. All else being equal, who wouldn’t prefer to reach 200 people instead of 20?

          180, 180, 180
That’s 180 more referrals. 180 more chances for repeat buyers. 180 more happy customers…potentially happy customers! So perhaps the only downside might be increased support time, but if you handle your theme’s documentation appropriately, you can mitigate your support time significantly, and we’ll talk about that more shortly.” http://goo.gl/sCEAY
          ————-
And this reasoning is why I believe the marketplace is so great. Why have Tuts+ go in a different direction? Sure, $19 is less than $50 and $1000 courses, but these are overpriced and typically paid for with corporate budgets. Your audience (and you’d know better than me) I would assume is mostly students and young professionals paying out of their own pocket who simply cannot add $19 to their monthly budget. $9 to $19 is a 111% price increase. Are we truly getting 111% more than we were getting for $9?

        • http://www.wdwfans.com Rick

I have to agree that the $9 price point worked as an “impulse” option, now its not such of a great deal, just a deal.

Surely if TutsPlus is to branch out it would be better off following its own marketplace style approach by allowing individual item purchases?

Or maybe even a tiered system (e.g Plus Standard, Plus Silver and Plus Gold) each at different prices, with different offerings.

        • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
          Author

James – That article compared a $20 theme vs. a $200 one. This is $9 vs. $19 (which is still cheaper than our competitors, I’ll add).

All existing Premium members can remain at the $9 price point (just without the new courses and ebooks).

        • oliver

          Occupy Tutsplus!

    • http://jamiepates.co.uk Jamie Pates

I was planning on getting premium until I saw the price tag, all in all I like it, in fact it looks amazing but I don’t think I’d use it enough to go that much over budget.

    • Rich

As some others have said it’s simply not a viable option for some anymore with the 100%+ increase when for a few $ more you can get subscriptions at other big places with a large library ,hopefully when you see the amount of subscriptions drop you’ll reconsider these drastic and unwarranted price hikes.

As James Gorman said if members want to buy books let them buy them separately on Tuts+ Marketplace where they already are for sale instead of trying to justify the price hike on adding the books for free here.

    • Russell

My question is, are the courses interactive? I.e. do they have browser-based activities? I like the videos on here, but you need to get the viewer active if they´re to learn anything.

    • http://ferus.info Maciej

Last few days i wanted to buy a premium again, but the new price stopped me :(
I really liked this premium content, but for me – here in Poland, 19$ a month is a big price for student…

    • Greg Stiffler

There’s no way I could justify signing up for Tuts+ again at that price. $9/month was kind of pushing it, but $19/month is just not an option.

    • Matt

I signed up a couple days ago for the first time. I assumed it always looked like this and had all of this content. Paying 19 bucks per month (well, 14 euros per month for me) is a no brainer.

    • wvz

Why we arent excited about this…

Price is simply to much for what you offer tbh..

its a nice site and 10 or 12 dollars would be fine but 19 is going overboard sorry

      • http://develpr.com Kevin

I just want to give my 2 cents, 10 or 12 is also not OK, at least not for me. I wouldn’t be able to justify the extra cost. It may only be a few more dollars, but there is so much great content for learning web development “stuff” on the web, and I mainly like nettuts because it makes the whole process easy and enjoyable. There is a real mental barrier for me between 9 and 10.

    • Wbx

I can pay 25$ for lynda.com , I pay 9$ for premium account on tutsplus, but 19$ for redesign and some books added is to much. 10 dollor will be ok for this, maybe 12 is the top. I defenitive will buy lynda.com account for 25$ than this one for 19$…

    • http://www.vision-ps.de irfan

New design is very good but the price is on high side. we student can not afford $180. it will be appreciated if price decrease.i thinks books are not important for us because we are tired of books

    • bpr

      Hey,

just wanted to say that I got that premium membership today. I must admit, my intention was more like. Ok lets get that, download some stuff and ask for the money back garuantee. – I know very evil. But I read through the Facebook book learned quite a lot of new things and started to get a client into that stuff, and now I am going to do his facebook page. I suppose I will earn a little bit more than the 19$ : ) So if there is a nice and fancy book coming up soon I might just stay with the premium membership as it is already totally worth it. Without the 19$ invested I would not earn that specific money for the facebook project. Also it got me more into facebook app stuff. So overall… great and thanks for that! Keep it up.

    • Vishal

Hey Jeffrey, I explored the Tuts+ premium and really liked it wanted to take a monthly membership but then thought to confirm something first : I am up to learning SharePoint these days, not much sure that we have courses for that on the Tuts+ Premium,

Please putt some light on it.

    • http://www.giulianoliker.com Giuliano

I like redesign and new content offered, looks sweet, but as already mentioned I’m not sure about doubling the price. In my case, and might be someone else too, I have subscription to many services like Basecamp, Lynda, few mobile apps, etc. They all add up and every month I pay bulk price. Now, that might work for me since in addition to freelancing I also have full time job, but I think this might be strain for those who don’t have guarantied monthly income. I wonder what would happened if all services I subscribe too double their price justifying with more content. To me it would be more logical if you have offered two subscription services, existing for $9 and additional content for $9 more and then both for let’s say $15. Forcing everyone to new pricing model is little bit harsh.
I’m mostly interested in front-end development articles, I would just glance over other articles if I find title appealing, so it’s hard for me to justify 100% price increase since I’m not reading all articles in Premium. This is why I’m not sure if I will renew my personal subscription. Instead I will use my company’s subscription from now on although I’m don’t know what to say to my boss if he ask me why is he’s cc charged more.
Having said all this I think TutsPlus is one of the best places on the net to learn, and still has good value for the money.

    • http://www.windkr89.nl Erik

I’m also Premium Member, but I’m not going to upgrade to a plan which doubled the monthly fee. About 10 dollar is a good price for the content offered, but 19 /mo is just too much. I never asked for books from Rockable, the ones I wanted I already bought.

So, the redesign is good (still missing the quick links for jumping to the different subsites (wp, net, psd, vector, etc) in the normal tutplus subsites, or am I missing something?), but the new price is just too high.

    • http://web.tursos.com Josue Ochoa

I will sub when this course “Professional Screencasting” is released :)

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

I’m working on that one in December. So it should be released around January.

    • Ian

I don’t get the complaints about price vs content. While I am dissapointed at having to upgrade my $9 account, I can’t complain. I finished college which took about 40,000 in student loans and have learned more from these tuts than I could have learned in college. I didn’t personally take the web dev route but I am way beyond what several of my web dev fellow students were thanks to sites like this.

Of course I would like to see intermediate and advanced video series to follow up the beginner ones. (css3, html5, codeigniter, jquery). I know it’s probably more difficult to come up with more advanced lessons but it seems as I look around the Internet for more knowledge all I can find are different versions of beginner tuts or tuts that spend 75% of content on the beginner stuff and then barely touch on more advanced topics at the very end.

As for lynda.com I may be missing something but a few tuts from there that I borrowed from a friend were very disappointing to me. They were like lets talk about theory and make bad jokes for 10 minutes and then show you how to do something that takes 30 seconds and then do it all over again for the next thing.

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

We have lots of advanced courses in the pipeline. :)

        • Abramo Franceschini

Very good Jeffrey, i really hope to see those advanced video courses soon.
I think they could be something that let you make the leap…. I mean, it’s ok to remake the fifth course on CSS and HTML essentials, new basic web design tutorials and so on, but if you really want to lead the site on another dimension, in my opinion you should work more on pro advanced detailed contents.
I’m a webdesigner and developer from Italy and I follow your networks since a while, considered that in my country we don’t have any cool, organized resources of this kind.

Thank you for your job and continue to improve the contents in the direction i tried to explain.
In that case those 19 bucks would be a very competitive price. I’m sure that a pro would be definitely inclined to pay also 29$ or 39$/month for a service that concretely add value to his skills (you could also provide different kinds of subscriptions if you want to cover a range which goes from the student who approach webdesign as an hobby to the quite experienced developer)….

    • http://www.hvs.on.ca Chris Lillis

When I originally came to this site and starting poking around to my amazement I found all this wonderful free content and hungered for more, I quickly took note of the premium section of the site and in short order I had signed up. With a price in the single digit range I barely had to think about pulling out my credit card.

19 Bucks, that’s a whole different matter, it really makes you pause and think alot more and as many others have mentioned its puts you up there with alot of the other competition. Your new Premium Section of the site must scale proportionally with the price increase in terms of increased content output. My biggest worry is the initial offering of courses, with a couple in their that are rehashed from the original Premium Program.

Ive been an on and off member for a long time now but from my understanding if I drop my membership and want to come back I will lose the ability to once again get the “Basic Membership”?

I hope that’s not the case but if it is I can only hope that the promise for a steady stream of new courses might convince me to bite the 19.99 dollar bullet!

With that all being said I really do appreciate the excellent teachers and the wealth of free content on offer, I would just hate to see it all go bad because of a loss of new signups and renewals.

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

        That may be true —

But what if we said, “You can get every single Rockable book, and a bunch of Smashing Magazine book for $19.” That would be an amazing deal . …It’s the same thing.

        • http://www.hvs.on.ca Chris Lillis

          Jeffery,

Indeed the books are a very good deal but not what I primarily come here for, the first thing I do when I come to the site is check if there is another Jeffery Way Screencast posted. I thoroughly enjoy your teaching style which makes even the more mundane stuff fun to learn. I have the utmost respect for your vast know how and the skill at which you pass that knowledge onto others.

Being a visual learner the Screencasts provide the perfect medium, with you and the other excellent Authors at the helm I’m always learning great new things. I would be very happy to see the basic membership opened up and offered as its stands now or maybe even have a basic membership where you only get premium content from one or maybe two ;) sites

    • Tony

I have to say that this is a bit of shock, I can’t seem to save video’s anymore ( even though it says to download a video) I don’t have Quick Time Plus, is there something I am missing ?

Compared to the competition the price is lower take the new treehouse site, things are tight and until I can download videos and watch them when I am not connected to the net will be the deciding factor if I dish out the loot

    • Steven

The quality and quantity of stuff the site delivers is certainly not in question. Fact is that I have no use for ALL the content, I am only visiting 2 to 3 of the sites frequently and cannot afford such a price increase. Great site but I will unfortunately have to draw back from purchasing a new subscription. A seperate subscription option would be ideal so you can choose between the 2.

    • arnold

wow its like the same scenario on your article…
      http://net.tutsplus.com/articles/editorials/is-conference-pricing-out-of-control/

the price is tight …. i know i know.. ^_^

    • http://develpr.com Kevin

Just want to say, I’m a long time subscriber to tuts+ premium (or whatever it was called), and a huge fan of Jeffrey and his tutorial, but I just want to say that I sadly will not be able to justify the $19 a month. As many pointed out, now that I have a job I was able to justify the $9 as something of 1) an impulse purchase, useful for the occasional premium tutorial I really wanted and 2) a small way to give back to a wonderful resource that helped me to learn a lot about web development.

$19 on the other hand moves it from “impulse, it’s a lot of money @~120 bucks a year but just don’t think about it” to “more then I spend on any given meal, half of what I spend on my cell phone bill and enough to allow me to purchase an iphone if I wanted, and twice what then I’m willing to spend on xbox live, netflix, etc”

I will certainly continue to use nettuts as a resource, and I will certainly still recommend the site to friends, but 9 bucks a month for a “basic” membership just doesn’t sit well with me. Add to that the fact that in recent months I have had issues on and off accessing premium content I have paid for (XML responses), the fact that I can’t figure out how to login to view a premium tutorial without leaving the page I’m on, etc… I wish you guys the best of luck, am sure you will be successful, but do hope that you find it in your interest to bring the price back down to the $9 level.

    • Marius

hehe! This always happens when something new or a design changes. Its a lot of complaining in the beginning, and people ease in to it after some time. I have redesign a couple of websites for free..( its charity and i got experiences from it) , and some users always always complaining, and the users that are happy don’t say much.

So i just want to say: God work people!

We saying in my family: “Old people don’t like changes, young people embrace changes.”

When i saw what that they offered for $19, i just had to buy it. I have been a user a good time now, and i like the path this is going :)

Actually its tuts+ fault that I’m felt in love with design, and are now a studying design, and you know what? i love it :)

First off, I want to compliment you for all the effort and service you brought to the community! This is an honest thank you, the quality on tuts+ is absolutely great.

Yet I won’t purchase a premium account. Let me tell you why.

As Premium was $9, I didn’t buy it in quite a while – premium tuts seemed great, but I didn’t know if I’d had time to read/watch them. After some tuts came along that catched my attention, and specially after I had to notice that most non-premium tuts are of little use to an intermediate, I decided to buy.

Yet it was the exact time your premium option was disabled, so I waited. When it came back on, price had doubled. And now I’m stuck with an extended version of my former problem:

      - Premium tuts look promising
      - But only few of them look really interesting if you’re working in the field
      - Courses and Books consume too much of my time, and contain a lot of stuff I already know
      - 180$/year is too much for the 1-2 tuts I’d like to watch once in a while.

If you had retained the 9$ option excluding books & courses, I’d be on.

Same as above, i have been following tutsplus for some time now, and few days ago i decided to buy 9$ premium content then i saw i cant register till new redesign is on…i was so happy once i got email that new premium has started… went to my bank to put 10$ as i am student :) then once i tried to register i saw that 19$ price….. damn :(

19$ is a bit to much for me, i am not interested in books, only videos but 19$ is a bit to much for a student so i really hope that you will introduce some other low cost plan without books, or maybe for specific tutorials as for now i think it lacks a content to be 19$….

you guys are great at building web sites, but maybe not so good in business… on the other hand, time will tell ;)

    • Eric

I think in the sentence “If you have a second, let me know show you what’s new.” you meant to say “If you have a second, let me now show you what’s new.”

    • http://webrent.lv LessthenQQ

I can`t understand about courses. There are some courses wich i can watch without Premium and other videos i can watch after i buy my premium account – is that true?
Or just that videos isn`t finished yet?

      Sorry for my bad english.
      Best, John.

P.S. Somewhere isn`t or will be some scholarships for this or something? :(

jeff can you people introduce student package because $19 is too much for a student. teamtreehouse.com is introducing student package of $9 in new year.

i hope that tutplus will also introduce something cheaper for students.

Last month, it was the first time I purchased a premium account. I was not disappointed because there are lot of nice tuts. But now the price is 19$… it’s not so high because here in Europe, all you can get for 19$ (=15€) is a webdesign mag with 70 pages of crap or tuts you can see everywhere in the internet.
But, I think I will wait like 4 or 5 months depending on the future tuts before rebuy one.
By the way nice redesign, and keep doing nice tuts

    • Preston Davis

So, the quarterly membership (@ $22.00) is gone?

Please advise as it nearly time for me to re-up!

I think you are too harsh with the new premium program. I actually like it better than the previous one.

I was an on/off premium member before. I usually took the 4-month subscription just because it was so cheap but usually canceled it after the 4 months, just because i didn’t really find much value on what was offered (i realized that i hadn’t read more than 1-2 premium tuts after those 4 months). It seemsed like the premium tuts were not much different than the free ones.

But now, i am really excited especially with 1. Cources and 2. Ebooks

      1. The “Cources” idea is simply excellent. I have watched almost 2 of them and i have to say i am impressed. I like the fact that they don’t try to teach you everything but they are long enough and to the point. It’s very nice to see a series of sort screencasts for a certain subject that can get you up to speed without having to read a whole book. They are easy to digest, full of “little” tips&tricks, informative and yet not bloated. Again, i cannot praise cources enough.

      2. Ebooks are also very nice. You get a very large collection of ebooks for a topic you are clearly interested (web developement that is). Did you also know that many ebooks come with many hours of screencasts? It’s awesome to have a screencast get you up to speed but also have an ebook for the subject for easy reference!

Now for the price. Yes 19$ per month is not trivial but if you have a little patience you can get a monthly subscription every other month or every four months and download the new content localy so you can study it with your pace. I am also considering this, although i have my reservetions that it maybe is not very ethical, but it’s up to envato to “force” us to want to pay every month by realeasing engaging and interesting content. And if they achieve this, i will sincerely not regret to pay them 19$ every month one bit :)

Oh, I see now that there was a price increase. And I’ve read the above comments.

      My $0.02 is as follows…

      1. Fish gotta swim…

This business is changing. Rapidly. The skills required to work in this medium are increasing in rapidity and complexity. Finding good training is a time-consuming process of visiting Amazon, reading reviews, following the blogs (e.g. A List Apart… which everyone should be following), buying books, reading books, re-reading books, then maybe one goes to Lynda.com and watch some more training… oh yeah and coding.

As my skills developed, it becomes harder and harder to find truly good training which addresses real-world issues. Especially in the video training field. Either the training was waaay over my head (i.e. many assumptions made on skill set) or was way to basic.

      Enter NetTuts.

Great presenters. Depth of Knowledge. Video training at MY level which is “light on the the fluff stuff” (I understand a “History of..” section, but they keep it short and relevant) and full of detailed real-world examples (i.e. “how to buld an {x} from start to finish”)… In truth, this stuff is really a gold mine. If you think this type of training has always been around, you’d be wrong. It has not. Not at this level.

My Verdict on the price increase: Justified (with a caveat).

      The Justification

I make my living working the web. Training is an important tool for growing my client base and supporting my existing clients growing/evolving needs. When I learn new skills, I put them to use in my products/services. Sometimes they are directly billable, sometimes they save me time, which saves me money. I am the client who buys the whole year package @ lynda.com. I am the person who will most likely buy the whole year here @ NetTuts. Why? Because of the convenience of not having to sweat a monthly bill, a small cost savings and because it is well worth the price (IMHO). Add to that, I I love what I do and good training helps me do it… i.e. fish gotta swim.

But that is me. Not everyone can afford to do this, hence….

      The Caveat.

Yes, NetTuts. I believe you SHOULD have a students price. With most students paying astronomical fee’s for the RIGHT to higher education and struggling under crippling student loan debt, every little bit helps.

Besides, all those students who go on to have a career in this field will likely BECOME the type of customer I have become: A grateful customer who sees training as a strategic advantage and gladly pays for a FAIR yearly price (based on the quality of the content).

That’s what you want, isn’t it?

Create a Student Price. It’s the right thing to do.

      Just one persons humble opinion.

      Preston

I strongly disagree with just lowering the prices just for Students, what about those that are on low incomes, or those that are currently not working, and want to learn new things?

Looks like I’ll have to look for other alternatives than Tuts+ until such time as the pricing structure becomes more affordable again, but I shall not hold my breath as the Staff do not seem too bothered judging by their lack of responses to this thread.
