10+ Reasons Why you Should Definitely Upgrade to Windows 7

I’m a PC, and I’ve always been one. That’s why I’m excited about the late release of Windows 7. I’ve been playing with the beta and release candidate for 10 months now, and for the last few months, I’ve been running Windows 7 exclusively. So let’s see what Microsoft’s latest offering is all about!

1. Homegroup

Homegroup is one of the most interesting new features in Windows 7. Setting up a home network has always been a rather tricky task, and Windows 7 is out to change that. Now, there’s no pain involved in setting up file and printer sharing between computers. Simply choose what you want to share from the PC, take the Homegroup password, and plug it into your other Windows 7 machines. You can choose which PCs get to use which files, give read-only access, and allows media streaming if you want (more on this below).

2. Taskbar

The taskbar has been part of Windows since Win95; but now, it better than ever. Hands up if you ever wanted to re-order the applications you have open; that’s what I thought. Now, you can pin applications to the taskbar as well; no it’s not quick launch. The quick launch toolbar has been retired because the whole taskbar is now quick-launch-like.

3. Aero

Aero was introduced in Windows Vista; you know, the transparent window borders. Windows 7 takes it all a step further. You can now hover over those taskbar thumbnail pop ups to get a view of that window only; that’s called Aero Peek. Then, you can drag individual windows to the top to maximize them, or left or right of to snap them to exactly half the screen: Aero Snap.

Aero Peek is also part of the “Show Desktop” button; forever, “Show Desktop” was part of the quick launch toolbar and could be removed if you didn’t want it. Now, it’s built into the toolbar, at the far right side.

At first you might think this was a bad move, but I would argue otherwise. Once you figure it out, you’ll know where to go for that button. And until you try, you don’t know how easy it is to throw your cursor into the corner; no eyes necessary. And you don’t even have to click it. If you just hover there, Aero Peek will show your desktop temporarily; once you slide off the button, you’re back to work.

4. Libraries

Libraries is one of my favorite features. How many people actually use the Documents folder (and only the Documents folder) to store your documents. Not me! Libraries lets you bring all your preferred folders together in one view; of course, you can choose which folder is the default save location. One of the sweetest parts is that you can add folder from other computers on the homegroup or network. Then, when you search the library, you get results from the other PCs as well. And it’s a cinch to share a library on the homegroup.

5. Jump Lists

I love jump lists too, because they’re all about saving you time. Right-clicking on a taskbar icon will bring up a small menu of options, recently / frequently used files (for that app) and tasks. To be honest, part of this has to be baked in by the program’s developer, but if you’re using the right pieces, you’ll at least get the recent / frequent files. And you can pin a file to any application, making it super easy to open regularly used files.

Bonus for Gmail users: check out Gmail Notifier Plus, a nice little app that lists your unread messages for you.

6. Enhanced Security

One of the biggest beefs with Vista was User Account Control. Yes, for the third time: I know I want to [insert action here]. Windows 7 makes this intrusive security feature much more friendly: you can choose your level of notification, from never to always.

For an extra layer of data security, Windows 7 offers BitLocker. Yes, it was there in Vista, but it’s now much improved and easier to use; simply right-click a drive to enable it. New to Windows 7 is BitLocker To Go, which allows you to easily encrypt portable devices like your easily lost USB keys; now you don’t have to worry about storing your sensitive data on a thumb drive.

For corporate situations, Windows 7 offers other security features like Domain Join, which easily connects you to your PC to your company network for easy working from home.

7. Media Streaming

This nifty feature turns your PC into a kind of media server. You can easily share media between computers on the network, deciding which computer gets to hear/see what. It’s simple to play your media on other devices, like a home stereo system, using the Play To feature. You can even play your media over the web. Simply enable internet access to to home media. You’ll need to install the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, and you’ll need a Windows Live Account, but that’s not much. It took me less than 3 minutes from start to finish to set this up (that includes downloading and installing the Assistant). Then, you can access your media from any Windows 7 PC with streaming enabled.

8. Performance Increase

Overall, Windows 7 is a leaner, meaner operating system. Memory usage is much better than in Vista. Search is speedier. USB devices are available faster than you can say “Plug and Play.” Windows 7 wakes up from sleep mode much quicker than previous versions. I definitely noticed a huge jump in the time it takes to get back on the network; it’s now almost instantaneous. I just restarted my PC to see how long it took to start up: ~40 seconds to get to the desktop and ~48 seconds for the complete boot.

9. Touch

Yes, Windows had support for touch screens before Windows 7, but now it’s bigger and better. With a better built-in keyboard, great finger gesture support, and more, using a touchscreen computer is easier than even. One example of this is jump lists: to bring up a just list on a touchscreen, simply press an icon and drag upwards. (This works with a mouse too; and give it a try if you’ve got a laptop with a touchpad!)

10. Simplicity

Sometimes the test of an OS is just as much what it doesn’t come with as what it does. No longer does Windows come with things like Movie Maker or Outlook Express. No, Microsoft has decided (at least in this area) and the customer knows best. If you want their software, you can get the Windows Live Essentials pack, or you can go for your own favourites. Also, you can now uninstall Internet Explorer if that will give you a hint of satisfaction.

Search in Windows 7 is much improved, but now you’re no longer limited to your own PC’s (or network’s) content. A new feature called Federated Search allows you to search other websites and servers. Any search engine that returns in an RSS feed can be turned into a search provider. The Windows 7 Forum offers quite a few search providers and shows you how to make a search provider for any website.

12. Perks

Windows 7 comes with many other perks:

  • Aero Shake
  • Action Center
  • Calculator (sounds lame, but it’s now pretty powerful)
  • Snipping Tool
  • Sticky Notes

Look them up and get excited!

That’s it for Now!

I hope this whirl-wind tour has excited you about Microsoft Windows 7 has revved you up! So what’s the verdict? Are you upgrading?

Meh… new iMac 27″ for 1.400 $… time to switch! xDD

    • http://inspiredbywordpress.co.uk Daniel Groves

If only I had the money…

      Going for the Quad-Core one?

    • Andrea

I don’t think so.. I prefer a configuration like this one:

INTEL CORE I5 750, 1 GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD3, WD, 500GB, SATA2, 32MB GP (WD5000AADS), ATI 4850, RAM DDR3 6GB PC1333 Kingston, PWS COOLER MASTER SILENT PRO M500W RS500-AMBAD3 and of course a nice monitor like this one DELL LCD monitor 2709WFP, and with the OS W7, you should be around 1400/1500$.. but with much more CPU/Graphic power and more RAM..

On the apple store the 27″ with dual core start from 1.700$..

      • http://jarrydcrawford.com/ Jarryd

It’s prices like this that make me wish I didn’t live in Australia. I have to pay $2800 for the above system, even though the economy has the US and AU dollar very similar (like 92c -> $1). For the i7 core and 1TB of HDD and AppleCare, yeah that’s like $3400. -_-

Either way W7 looks like it’s going to be very cool (being a Windows user for a long time).

  • http://mumptastic.com Michael

I like it, but I get more done on my Ubuntu computer than I do on windows… It’s a lame excuse but I think I am going to stick with Linux for now.

Wows, ow about price/scale benefits? I built a win7 pc that can bench more then your power mac for 500bucks (and I can upgrade the pwr supply and play l4d). i5′s are awesome

You look young and probably not very productive yet.
Switching is a trend not a necessity.

Walter…small 20 persons web agency sticking to XP for at least 3 more years.

  • Darren

“~40 seconds to get to the desktop and ~48 seconds for the complete boot” – are you kidding? My home machine running XP is by no means high-end (and one year old) and it takes 12 seconds to get to the desktop and 16 seconds for a complete boot. Looks like performacne is going backwards.

    • Travis

Mind showing some proof of this amazing 16 second boot? (From cold to desktop)

  • IgnacioRV

I’ve installed the professional version on my Dell laptop and it works great. W7 is a worthy successor of XP.

I don’t know why people are 100% fans of one OS and defend it untill death. I use windows for some works and linux for other… it’s all about discovering which one suits better for our needings.

    • http://jarrydcrawford.com/ Jarryd

You said it. Fanboys/girls need some slappin’, that goes for any OS!

    • Ibesoringola

This is the point. Use what suits your works. No more than that!

I can not afford Microsoft Windows 7′s packages, £100+ Windows or could buy a computer for the same price. Microsoft is insane! only if I could afford a Mac :(

  • http://chrisberthe.com/ chrisberthe

Although you make some valid points, I find that your article isn’t that convincing to someone who’s not sure whether or not they should upgrade. There’s so many other features that you’ve missed (and I’m sure it wasn’t your intent to list everything new) but one of the main reasons to upgrade, other than performance speed, is that 99% of the drivers will auto install. I plugged in my 2 year old printer (having no idea where the CD was) and a minute later it was ready to use. My 2nd monitor, plugged in and was fully functional. Even my prehistoric korean webcam that my friend gave me 8 years ago works.

I have both a mac and a PC. But honestly, Microsoft’s come a long way and people who seem hesitant should definitely give it a go.

  • Kat

I’ve recently converted to Mac, but still use Windows at work. I have XP there and so far it’s pretty ok, but seeing this makes me want to give Windows 7 a try, although I don’t think my machine can take it. It looks great though.

    • Nori Silverrage

You’d be surprised what Windows 7 will work on. :)

  • UlaTh

“Setting up a home network has always been a rather tricky task…” for some maybe, but this is a reason for an upgrade for most?
Win 7 performs great though, not only better then vista (not hard), but better then XP as well. Even runs on my 8 year old laptop….

  • jay

woohoo! the vista nightmare is over! now i can finally ditch my mac pro and get back on a system that isn’t so friggen limited. you have to admit, the selection of software available to the mac really sucks compared to the PC. and if you don’t, i bet you’re really caught up in all that status BS haha! i can’t wait to disassociate myself with mac blowhards!

    • Jason Wilson

I use my Mac for office work, budgeting, art, communication, entertainment, marine navigation, programming and organization. In 6 years I haven’t had a need to touch my PC, it’s just gathered dust in a corner.

Tell me again what I’m missing in software.

Macs aren’t a status symbol they’re a reliable, effective tool.

Bought new lappy. Guess what free upgrade to windows7. Gr8 article, going to upgrade soon.

    • http://jarrydcrawford.com/ Jarryd

I missed out by a couple of months on my free upgrade, now I have to pay $366 to upgrade from Vista –> Win7. What is that? What a ridiculous price. The full install is $398! Wow thanks Microsoft, you are saving me $32 for an upgrade disk.

  • viaria

    i still wonder
that how many ram we can use and similer things like that for who dont understand computer parts..

    • Darren

For the 32-bit version, you won’t get any advantage with more than 4GB of RAM. For the 64-bit version, you can use up to 16.8 million *terabytes* of RAM ;)

  • http://e-jho.com Joelson

I loved the windows 7, simply fantastic

certainly the best of all versions of Windows, Microsoft took shame in the face, and did something worthwhile

  • Michael L.

I’ve been running Windows 7 since it came out as a beta, and I’ve loved it. I haven’t tried out a Mac yet, but they seem alright. Though Apple’s products are starting to go down the drain; although this is completely unrelated, I think the Zune HD is a fresh new start from the overhyped iPod Touch.

  • Itai Ferber

I’m running Windows 7 on Bootcamp, and I’ve got to say that it’s pretty impressive. This is the first version of Windows I haven’t cringed at booting into, and I’m even keen to say that this is going to attract a lot of people, and might even keep some people from buying Macs…

That being said, Windows is still Windows, and I’d never let go of my Mac. :D

  • Brett

I really want to get it but i’m hesitant because of the fact they said an upgrade from XP to windows 7 is virtually not possible. From what i’ve read you basically can backup your system settings and files but all programs (once upgraded to 7) will have to be reinstalled because Windows 7 wasn’t designed to upgrade from XP, only from vista. That really sucks having to wipe it clean.

I’m still going to buy it though, just because i’ve heard great reviews. It’s just going to take awhile to upgrade.

    • Nori Silverrage

Yeah thats the part that kind of sucks. But doing a completely clean install does wonders for a system. Well worth the work every few years. I’ll be doing it for my XP machine, but its not too bad since I have My Documents on another hard drive and so the only thing to backup from my C: drive is app settings and maybe some game saves.

    • http://monkey-house.ca Greg

There is a 3rd-party software that will do it. I can’t remember the name offhand, but if you dig around I’m sure you’ll find it.

On the other hand, I’ll be clean-installing.

  • Brad

You talk about networking with other Win7 boxes, how well does it network with other Vista boxes and all the printer and file sharing? Do you lose all the features in the homegroup?

  • http://spotdex.com David Moreen

Personally I think a Mac is still the best for design, video editing, Ryby, Python, Java, basically anything developer-esk. Sure the new UI looks nice and all, and maybe the OS uses a little less ram, but come on; lets be realistic here.

    • http://www.zograph-studio.com Nio

WHy mac is best for design? I mean, this is stupid. If you are real designer, you will be designer even if all computers go down..you will make in the way they made the design in 1940 with no PCs….

This is just tool, it can’t make design. You can make it.

      Nothing more…

      • Ibesoringola

I guess he means Computational Art. C’mon, bro! This is all about damn computers.

      • Jason Wilson

I can cut a piece of wood with a pocket knife or a power-saw. Both will do the job but I know which I prefer with the choice.

Having a Mac simplifies a lot of my old work-flows, even standard tools like Photoshop and Illustrator work better and are organised better than their Windows equivalents.

    • Travis

Yeah, let’s be realistic here…wait I was waiting for you to actually post something after that as to WHY you think it’s better. Because…there isn’t anything you can *design* on OSX that you can’t design on a Windows machine.

    • Nori Silverrage

Why is that? My wife is a successful photographer and former Film Production student and she prefers the windows computer (she had a G4). I do web design and prefer Windows as well. Is it better? No, is it worse, no. It comes down to personal preference and what you are willing to pay for.

  • http://61dh.com/jtester Adam

someone likes it, but someone not, no matter which product from whichcompany.

  • Kris Nicolaou

The corporate world uses Windows because their personal lack of knowledge and their IT’s ignorance to learn beyond what they were taught in school. “Windows 7 runs perfect”….? When you compare week old pizza to a freshly ordered burger, obviously the burger seems better, but I will stick to apples ;)

    • http://www.pixelsoul.com pixelsoul

It is so funny how some Mac users get almost offended when someone says something good about Windows. Even funnier is if you talk to these people most of them have no idea what they are even talking about.

And by the way, this is an article about Windows 7 and it’s new features and how it might have compared to previous Windows OS… not how it compares to Mac OS, so all the elitist mac users can all calm down now. Arguing about what OS is better is like some fool trying to argue with me about Vanilla is better than Chocolate (I like them both :P).

      • Spadez

Mac fan boys need to justify the price of macs by slating windows. If they were secure with their purchase they wouldnt need to do this.

    • Nori Silverrage

lol, I hope this was a joke… Because I work in the corporate world and the reason we don’t use macs or linux is because hardly any of the business specific applications work on anything other than windows. We can’t even migrate to Windows 7 because of these applications. Another reason is that a windows server/desktop environment is very easy and simple to setup and administrate whereas a mac based one is decidedly difficult. Believe me, we’ve tried integrating macs here, and although they work it takes a lot to get them to play nice.

  • http://www.barbariancoders.com Crypto

And of course, don’t forget the hundreds of free viruses that come with it. You no longer have to pay for viruses.

I wonder when Windows will come with all the useful day-to-day apps you need (office suite, multimedia, PROPER CD burner, etc) off a fresh install… you know.. like Linux.

    • http://monkey-house.ca Greg

Not getting slapped with anti-trust lawsuits would help… if you think they get slapped for including IE, wait until they try to include other apps…

  • Bretticus

I am a true geek. I love my Windows 7 (had the beta for quite awhile. The only true gaming platform. gotta love that!), I absolutely love my Macbook Pro (‘specially for Web development b/c of the *nix stacks.) And I have been an Ubuntu Linux enthusiast for years (better, easier to install, configure *nix stack services. Can you say apt! But not as UI friendly as the Mac.) They all have pros and cons, but they are all absolutely fabulous.

  • http://www.environ.mn Batmunkh

I suggest you upgrade to it. It is the best Windows OS ever. I’m telling you it won’t disappoint like Vista.

Nettuts team please come back to the old way of developing this site!

Some people are actually interested in this stuff since… well you know, we sort of use computers with operating systems in our work and stuff…

    • Evan Jones

Dude, its Windows 7. I think they can break from spoon-feeding us tutorials for a minute :P

  • http://www.crearedesign.co.uk Stephen Webb

Finally it looks as if Windows has turned a corner. I think years of unreliable and resource hungry versions have left many people disillusioned with the operating system, so hopefully this looks like the antidote!

Looking at some of the new features, especially the new taskbar design, it seems Microsoft has taken more than a few hints out of Apples OS X book. This is not to slate them for simply copying, it’s to praise Microsoft for starting to think more innovatively and about intuitive design features.

Being a Mac person, you can probably tell, I won’t be making the switch to Windows 7. But it does look like Microsoft are finally starting to catch up on OS X’s key selling points of ease of use and “works straight out of the box” features.

  • Spadez

I was thinking about changing to apple since I am designer, but im so glad I didn’t. I cant explain it, but using windows 7 is like an orgasm, love it.

      *to upgrade

    • Nori Silverrage

P.S. Because the author likes it that way I guess. There is a option to use small icons and it halves the size.

As someone who has a Mac Pro and a PC, I prefer Windows 7 over OSX. When I was on Vista, I was using my Mac for just about everything and to be honest, I haven’t even booted it up in over a week now that my laptop is running Windows 7.

Not saying the Mac isn’t just as good…just saying Windows 7 is definitely one of the best (and most stable) OS’s I’ve ever used in my life.

  • http://tutsvalley.com Boba

I’m using Windows Seven and i must say it is THE BEST WINDOWS EVER CREATED (yea, better then XP that i like so much).

And the search is amazing, so FAST :)

  • Neil

Mac OS X has been out for 10 years, only now have Windows caught up and practically copied it, so to me Mac is 10 years in front…windows sucks.

    • Andrea

If you don’t know MAC is a closed and modified version of linux : years ago, they take the linux open source code, add some functions a new GUI and voilà, they created a “new” payable OS from free linux OS.. for me that is a shame, a lot of code was copied, closed, and they are selling it to you for gold and you believe in that.

      • hannon

        WRONG, UNIX is the base.

Linux and OSX are based in UNIX… Mac OS had an interface and Linux didn’t know what kde/gnome/windowmaker was… and Linux was made to be a “cheap” version of UNIX… Their DNA is the same.

        (linux = Linus + UNIX) ¬¬

BTW, for me Microsoft best OS was win 2000. BY FAR.

      • Neil

Ubuntu is a fantastic system, I would rather have that as my OS than Mac or Windows but unfortunalety with the mac you cant run the Adobe software without messing around using virual windows etc, so for me it’s still mac os.

      • http://twitter.com/mattkirman Matt Kirman

Mac OS X is actually derived from BSD and not Linux. Apple aren’t the only company to create a commercial product out of an open-source OS, Red Hat have been doing it for years.

  • Robot

In my opinion, Snow Leopard and Windows 7 are both great OS. It’s not about the OS, it’s about how you use it and become productive of it. Even if you own the most expensive powerful Macbook in the world but you only use it for browsing the web, emails, and watching YouTube, it really makes no sense having a machine like that.

Windows 7 is a great OS and it’s what I’m using right now. The real difference are the fanboys.

    • Nori Silverrage

Amazon is like that sometimes. Just be patient, I’m guessing that Windows 7 is going to be a very popular product.
