I agree about the subdomains, they’re not ideal – but that’s true of any compromise.

the subdomains mean that a new site can be added without having to secure the separate domains (many of which have been bought by individuals) so i think its a good idea.

i think envato are still hoping to secure tuts.com from the current owners, but i guess that these things take time.
