Highly Recommended Services and Apps: CodeCanyon Sponsors

As most of you know by now, we’re hosting an enormous competition to celebrate the recent launch of CodeCanyon. The $6200 worth of prizes simply wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors. Luckily, I can also say that I 100% recommend each and every one of the services/products listed below.

Media Temple

“Media Temple hosts websites. Big and Small. For years we’ve taken complex technology and simplified it for the everyday website owner. Our products are designed to be powerful, affordable and relevant. Please take a look around; perhaps (mt) is a good choice for your next project.”

They’re who I personally use for all my hosting needs.

TechSmith

I use Camtasia Mac for every weekly screencast on this site!

Wufoo

“Wufoo strives to be the easiest way to collect information over the Internet.

Once you have started collecting that data you can use the information you gathered in our online database or export it. With FormSpring anyone can build all types of web forms, collect data online and do it simply and efficiently.”

We use FormSpring for our tutorial submission forms. Visit Web.Appstorm for a full review.

“This will change the way you design websites.

Threadsy is simply, amazing, no, it’s more than amazing. What’s more than amazing? Whatever that is, it’s that.

Nice post, I’m going to look into a few of these. But FormSpring & TypeKit links are broken.

media temple? really? they don’t have good reviews

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

You sure about that? I’ve found that their customer support is insanely good.

      • thirteen

when i was shopping around for a new hosting provider last year and i read really bad reviews (especially about their grid service) on various blogs. i know a few people who had a very bad experience with their support.

      • Matt

I’ve had amazing results with their support. Though, I do agree their service is a bit pricey for what it offers. Since I route everything through an S3, the über storage they have somewhat goes to waste.

    • http://abeautifulsite.net/ Cory LaViska

We use Media Temple Dedicated Virtuals (DVs) and find that the systems and the service are both incredible. I’ve heard less fantastic things about their GS, but from personal experience I would highly recommend them (especially least for a DV).

By the way…Surreal CMS is hosted on a (mt) DV :)

      • http://crispytech.com Saad Bassi

Don’t you rememeber? At the end of last year most of the websites were hacked and the ftp passwords were even hacked. Didn’t you read the article of darrenhoyt?

    • http://they.misled.us Jeffrey

I had a terrible time with media temple. The latency on the servers was so bad I had to jump ship. And, their support is pretty slow. Do not be surprised to put in a support request and not receive a response until the next day, or later.

      • jo

and when you do receive a response, it is not something that addresses your problem. it’s just a pre-written template

    • http://www.hombrelogo.com susi

how funny it’s recommended! I use their grid service and 4 days ago i sent a support request (trouble ticket) because my email (and webmail) was (is) slow, nearly unusable. Each response takes 24 hours, meaning that if you ask a few questions, you can be days without a solution. And the solutions usually are weird, and never their guilt (“internet routing issues between Europe and the US”, when i use other US services with no problem at all). They have exhausted my patience, so i’m now (today) changing to another hosting provider.
Maybe the dedicated virtual or nitro users are delighted, but we, grid users, are treated like pariahs.

In spain we have a saying: build your fame and go to sleep

      • http://zreedee.com Luis

Solo por curiosidad susi.. que servidor tienes ahora? porque yo estoy en un GS de media temple y estoy más que satisfecho con el soporte técnico…

        Un saludo!

    • http://3dessentials.com Anton

Grid Service there is beyond horrible. A brand new install of wordpress or joomla would take about 10 to 15 seconds to display. Put in quite a few support tickets and basically their answer was that they knew about it and the solution was to upgrade to a dedicated server…

Jumped ship to HostGator and I couldn’t be happier!

  • http://abeautifulsite.net/ Cory LaViska

Good deal, and great contest, Jeffrey! I hope Code Canyon does well.

  • Meh

From personal experience, Media Temple is one of the worst host I have ever used, as far as uptime and speed is concerned. As a matter of fact uptime and speed is 2 of the 3 most important thing you should look at when considering to use a host. The other thing is Customer Service, which without doubt MT has a good customer service, I will give them that.

But what am I going to do with top notch customer service if my site is constantly down and slowed down to a crawl?

This is not even a new problem, MT always had reliability issue for as long as I can remember, before they used to give free months to people for downtime, now things have gone so bad that if you ask them (via twitter or customer service) they already have a default message for you “We are aware of the problem and working on it”. Every single time for the last six months, and they are still working on it?

Its like they don’t even care. I have used both gs and their VPS solution and both have horrible performance issues for as long as I can remember.

I am appalled that anyone would even recommend them.

    • http://mediatemple.net Scott DeSmet

      Hi,

I thank you for your nod to our Customer Service. We certainly work hard at earning our good reputation!

I’ll be the first to admit that we are not without the occasional flaw, but we do work diligently to address any issues as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, your experience wasn’t good but doesn’t sound typical.
I’d certainly like an opportunity to speak with you further to see if we can change your opinion of us.

      • http://3dessentials.com Anton

If you read the couple posts above it seems to be the typical experience unfortunately… I was really happy with your service for all my static websites but when I started using cms’ everything turned in a nightmare.

  • http://flickr.com/photos/kibondo Vegar

Good stuff, gonna have to look into Surreal CMS and Threadsy, never tried those. Also, I’ve heard good things about MediaTemple, but I prefer Eleven2 myself. Those guys are amazing.

  • Ben

Media Temple are the worst company I’ve used in a long time for hosting, I wouldn’t recommend them to anybody, this was obviously a bias plug anyway, not that I’d take any notice of what sell-out websites to say.

  • http://www.jordanwalker.net/index.php Jordan Walker

Will have to check them out.

  • Joao Aliano

I’m thinking of giving up my plus subscription in face of the repeated sponsored articles, round ups etc etc, many of them of little interest or valuable content.

In my mind the question is how does subscribers’ money compare to the cash cow these articles have become.

    Media Temple? Really?

    • thirteen

guess this articles was part of the contest sponsorship deal with Media Temple. Apart from having an ‘out of this world’ interface, Media Temple absolutely good for nothing. If support is what’s important, then Hostgator wins hands down. They have ‘real’ 24×7 support.

      • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
        Author

It’s not strange for a blog to make a posting thanking their sponsors. Many sites do it every week. The companies above donated to our CodeCanyon competition, and they 100% deserve a thank you. You don’t have to read it. :)

      • http://3dessentials.com Anton

I second the HostGator opinion! True 24×7 support with the chat which is quite amazing. Also uptime for me since august of last year was 99.9999% (I’m using aremysitesup.com and since then I got just 2 notifications that my sites were down for about 1-2 minutes at a time)

  • http://mediatemple.net Scott DeSmet

    Hello!

We are excited to contribute our services to the CodeCanyon Competition! Long live the interwebs!

  • http://www.hombrelogo.com susi

    Shame, MT… shame!

…And how can Codecanyon recommend Media Temple, when, if you search through whois, you see they use Engine Yard hosting and tutplus uses Slicehost?

    • jib

haha…it’s funny that nettuts endorses MT. i used to look at nettuts for ‘valuable’ and ‘real’ advice. guess i was wrong.

    • twang

i found MT service to be really bad. it’s sad that nettuts recommends them.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

I never said CodeCanyon or Envato endorse MT (though who knows). I said that I personally use them – and have experienced excellent service.

  • jib

just added a comment on what i think about MT and how nettuts endorses it. didn’t get published. well done nettuts…guess you know what you’re up to.

  • vsinha

i was with MT for 1 year and i can say it was HELL. their support is hopeless (and slow). i would never recommend it to anyone

  • vsinha

i would never recommend MT to anyone

  • Ben

    Sell Outs

  • ray

totally agree. nettuts shouldn’t have endorsed MT. really sad

  • james

net tuts you have just lost another visitor.
the quality of your website’s content has been dropping dramatically, and after this stunt and my horrible experience with media temple… i will no longer support a website/company that endorses dodgy products.

    • http://www.jeffrey-way.com Jeffrey Way
      Author

      Hi James?

Stunt? What stunt? Thanking our sponsors? I appreciate that you had a bad experience, but plenty of others have had the opposite.

      • http://www.crispytech.com/ saad

Jeff. You have already saw the response. Its a fact that MT has a sub standard service and most people have bad experience with them. Next time choose your sponsors with Care. Everyone trusts you and of course Nettuts.

      • james

        highly recommended services

You’re selling a dodgy product to your followers, I may have had a bad experience, but from reading this thread so has 90% of the other posters.

Just remember, your visitors are what makes your website, not these small advertising money injections…

  • http://www.crispytech.com/ saad
  • Mikey

Oh come on man! please dont be so negative about MT. You or some of you may have bad experiences with MT but a lot of people out there are very happy with them. Remember happy customers tend not to post or praise the services online like do unhappy ones.

I never use MT and may never will (bcoz they are costly) but I have bunch of good comments about them. Many high traffic websites are being hosted by MT.

Finally, this is just a recommendation, take it or not is YOUR choice. I would not trust only one source when I do my research. So rest assured many other wont because of this article will make mistake.

So calm down, we all know you are frustrated and we understand that. But don’t make it a hell of a deal about this article.

    • david

bullshit , they are terrible period. their service is unreliable and any developer with any sense would steer clear of ther overhyped bullshit platform. ooohh and iphone app. How about decent performance first. its no coincidence that NO-one has defended them. If this were an article about my host , slicehost , i would defend them tooth and nail.

      • neron-fx

Seconded! I have a $20 a month GS account and an account with Slicehost too. Slicehost wins for performance hands down even on their $20 bucks a month slice! Better speed, more control and way better support and uptime. I had a problem with my GS account and it took almost 36 hours for anybody to get back to me. Meanwhile at Slicehost I was up at some ridiculous hour setting up my server, had a problem, spoke with some slice geek the other end on live chat, 2 mins later I had an answer! Thank you Slicehost! :-)

I shall be cancelling my MT account at the end of the year and upgrading my Slice with the extra $20 a month!

  • Keegen

I commend nettuts for rounding up different ways to fund the great resources they bring to us. I don’t feel like Jeff or nettuts has tried to lead anyone anywhere with negative or self intentions. Thanks Jeff for the round up, but it does look like I’ll be passing on mt.
    Cheers

  • Lethality

Media Temple is extremely overrated. They have some cool ease-of-use tools for managing things, but their performance and reliability is poor.

  • jem

I use to get hosting through MediaTemple, really great service. The control panel is pretty unmatched from my experiences (both visually and functionally).

Left them because they charged extra if you wanted to work with Django or Rails.

If money is no concern though, excellent solution.
