Hosting services have gotten a lot better in recent times, more storage, more bandwidth, cheaper prices. But there is only so far that regular hosting will go. When I first launched PSDTUTS, despite being on a great webhost with some big specs, we ran into both bandwidth and file serving problems when our tutorials (each containing dozens of heavy images) would land on Digg. And then a friend recommended I try using Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (aka S3).

It’s two weeks since NETTUTS launched and I’m happy to report the site is kicking along better than I ever expected! With two and a half thousand RSS readers and some eight thousand visitors a day, it’s kinda staggering for a brand new site!

Projects vary in scope and size, and the challenges they entail vary likewise. As a lone web designer, the biggest job I am responsible for is FlashDen. Along with thousands of active members all chatting, uploading and buying, the site processes large amounts of money and large amounts of traffic.

One of the biggest challenge to web designers is finding ways to place a lot of information on a page without losing usability. Tabbed content is a great way to handle this issue and has been widely used on blogs recently. Today we’re going to build a simple little tabbed information box in HTML, then make it function using some simple Javascript, and then finally we’ll achieve the same thing using the jQuery library.

Although it can have some issues, PayPal does provide a very simple way to take payments on a website. And with a little tweaking you can easily turn a PayPal “Buy Now” button into a form where the user specifies how much they’d like to pay and what they are paying for.
