Earn Fame and Fortune in the Nettuts/Screenr Screencast Competition
Sep 2nd in Contests by Jeffrey Way
We've paired with Screenr to launch our second screencast competition; but this time, it's easier than ever to participate. By using Screenr, recording your screencasts becomes laughably simple. "Just click the record button, and you'll have your ready-to-tweet screencasts in seconds!"
To enter, all you must do is hit record, and teach us something related to web development in five minutes or less. That's it! We'll then filter through the submissions, and choose the top five winners.
Hi, I'm Jeff. I'm the editor of Nettuts+, and the Site Manager of Theme Forest. I spend too much time in front of the computer and find myself telling my fiance', "We'll go in 5 minutes!" far too often. I just can't go out to dinner while I'm still producing FireBug errors...drives me crazy. During my free time, I sporadically write articles for my own personal blog. If it will keep you in the good graces of the church, follow us on Twitter.
How Do I Enter?
Easily! In fact, everyone can enter! Here's how:
Step 2: Press record!
You should consider lowering your capture size. Use one of the presets or set your own custom size with the handles - perhaps 1280x720 or 1280x800. Also, it's not required that you use a condenser mic. If you'd instead prefer to use your computer's built in mic, be sure to adjust the input levels prior to recording. It might take a few test videos to get it just right. Here's a great screencast that demonstrate how to adjust your mic levels on a Mac.
Step 3: Teach us something related to web design/development in five minutes or less.
Just remember that the tutorial should appeal to our specific audience. For instance, a Java screencast, though fantastic, isn't the best tutorial for Nettuts+.
Step 4: Make a tweet linking to your screencast, and include the "#nettuts" hash - so that we can track it! Your tweet counts as your submission - that's all you need to do.
After you finish recording your screencast, Screenr will allow you to automatically tweet a link to your video tutorial. Just be sure to add the #nettuts hash.
All submissions must be received by September 30, 2009 CT (US), 11:59 PM.

Here's a five minute screencast that I created, which would be perfect for this contest. Notice how it doesn't try to cover too much. It focuses on one helpful technique, and nothing more. Remember - Screenr limits your recording time to only five minutes.
How to Add a Drop-Shadow Across All Browsers
Thanks to our Sponsor, Screenr!
"Screenr is a web-based tool that lets you create screencasts without installing any software. You just click the record button and your screen activity is recorded along with narration from your microphone. Screenr then publishes your screencast in high-definition Flash format. Screenr makes it easy to share your screencast on Twitter, YouTube or anywhere else on the web. Even iPhone users can view your screencast."

We apply the “Don’t Repeat Yourself” (DRY) programming technique to a WordPress theme. This makes maintaining and editing your post layout MUCH quicker, as it’s all in one place as opposed to having the same layout code in several files.
( )Shane September 2nd
I like it Dan – I wonder why I haven’t seen that sort of thing in Wordpress themes before.
Dan Harper September 2nd
I only thought of it as I have been using Rails for the past month or so, but needed to code a template into WordPress. And I realised it was madness that WordPress didn’t have a “partial” system.
I learnt a lot from Rails about what makes good code

I’m doing tutorials on a digital painting app, if anyone wants to take a stab at it let me know. It’s Project Dogwaffle. I’m particularly interested in great tutorials on the use of particle brushes which carry animated custom brushes, i.e. painting with video over stills or with video over video. I know how to do this (duh, it’s our proggy:-) but I am looking for someone with a great idea of how to best show it.
