PHP/JS Competition: Win an iPhone 3G S!
Jul 27th in Contests by Jeffrey Way
As many of you know, we recently launched two new categories on ThemeForest which feature PHP and JavaScript components. To help boost our selection, we thought that it might be fun to hold a small competition on Nettuts+.
How's it work? In a sentence: the authors of the three best submissions to these categories, between now and August 14, will receive prizes and exposure, courtesy of CSSRockstars.com.
Hi, I'm Jeff. I'm the editor of Nettuts+, and the Site Manager of Theme Forest. I spend too much time in front of the computer and find myself telling my fiance', "We'll go in 5 minutes!" far too often. I just can't go out to dinner while I'm still producing FireBug errors...drives me crazy. During my free time, I sporadically write articles for my own personal blog. If it will keep you in the good graces of the church, follow us on Twitter.
How Do I Enter?
Very easily, actually. Prepare either a JS or PHP component and submit it to ThemeForest. If it's approved by the ThemeForest reviewers, submit a link to your item through the competition entry form. Once you've done so, you'll automatically be entered!
- Entries will close at midnight, August the 14th (Pacific Standard Time).
- Anyone (worldwide) is eligible to enter, as long as you are not an Envato staff member or regular author.
- Regarding the CSS Edit prize - PC users can request an extra 6 months Plus membership instead of this prize.
Winners
A team of no less than four developers will determine the winners. The top three authors will receive the following:
1st Place Prize
- We will pay for a new iPhone 3G S ($199 USD value) - via a $200 Apple gift card.
- 1 x CSSEdit ($42 USD value, or + 6 Months Plus membership for PC Users)
- 1 x One-year Plus Membership ($117 USD value).
2nd Place Prize
3rd Place Prize
- 1 copy of CSSEdit ($42 USD value, or + 6 Months Plus membership for PC Users)
- 1 x 6 Month Plus Membership ($44 USD value).
What happens to my items if I'm not in the Top 3?
That's the wonderful thing about this competition. Even if you don't win, you'll still earn 40-70% for every sale on ThemeForest! So actually, you can't lose!
Don't forget to check back on August 14th to determine if you're a winner or not!

Oh, cool!
( )Mark Philp July 27th
Cool
p.s
( )What about people that don’t own a MAC?
Rik Girbes July 28th
Well, then you probably aren’t able to use cssedit….
But you can still enter this competition, and maby win the iphone…. (you dont need a mac for that)
Good luck!
( )Skellie July 28th
We’ve decided to allow non-Mac users to request an extra 6 months free Plus membership in place of this prize.
( )Ernie July 27th
What are the restrictions? Are Canadians (Or any non-US at that) allowed!?
( )Damien July 27th
Reading the “or equivalent cash value if outside US” in the 2nd prize implies (to me anyway) that non-US can enter.
( )Skellie July 28th
Entries are open worldwide – as with all our competitions.
( )Matt July 27th
Now to just come up with an awesome script to enter -_-”
( )Ian July 27th
What if you’re a windows user and win the first or third place prize?
( )Matt July 27th
They may cash it out to the USD value.
( )Skellie July 28th
Not sure where you got this information from, Matt – that’s incorrect
We will offer 6 months free Plus membership to non-Mac users in place of CSS Edit.
Nouman Saleem July 27th
The iPhone works on PC.
( )Ryan July 27th
CSSEdit doesn’t.
Skellie July 28th
We’ve decided to allow non-Mac users to request an extra 6 months free Plus membership in place of this prize.
( )Alex Wind July 27th
Then you need a mac
( )Ryan July 27th
slight correction to your prizes, the second place prize say a 6 month Plus membership ($117 USD). Should it be a $44 usd value as correctly stated in the 3rd place prize?
( )Skellie July 28th
Good catch Ryan – fixed!
( )Neil July 27th
So the prize is a $199 apple gift card, not an iPhone?
( )Omar Abid July 31st
ohhhhhhhhhhhh $199 = a new Iphone 3 G s, can’t you check the iphone site?
if they gave u $199 apple gift card, you’ll buy with them an iphone or just spend them on other stuff if you have it already
( )Rocky July 27th
Learn to read, it says We will pay for a new iPhone 3G S ($199 USD value)
the first place item is valued at over 199 USD.
( )Rick July 27th
Ok so…if my contract isn’t ready for renewal with AT&T….and I win…does TF pay the full iPhone price?
( )Kevin Urrutia July 27th
No, you just get the 199$ gift card which can be *use* to buy an iPhone. If you already have one then you can just buy anything else from apple.
( )Rik Girbes July 28th
Realy?? thats cool!!
So in my case: i want to buy a macbook…. but still need some money… can i use that gift card for my macbook?
(i ofcourse wont be able to buy the complete macbook with it… but i helps..)
Skellie July 28th
That’s correct.
Miles Johnson July 27th
So the script can be for anything?
( )Raj July 27th
Is this contest limited to the participants from USA?
( )Rik Girbes July 28th
Please read other comments.
( )(This question has already been asked)
jack July 27th

( )Rik Girbes July 28th

( )Tommy M July 28th
Will be entering Clivo after I am finished with Version 2.0. Woohoo!
( )Drew Douglass July 28th
I’m assuming this isn’t open to staff members?
( )James July 28th
Don’t think so
( )Skellie July 28th
That’s correct – sorry Drew!
( )Drew Douglass July 28th
No worries, just figured I’d ask, good luck all

( )nate coventry July 28th

( )Muhammad Adnan July 28th
This is a great chance for me to submit my component now .
( )what is the last date of submitting ?
techietim July 28th
“Entries will close at midnight, August the 14th”
But remember, your item first needs to be approved by the Themeforest staff, which could take a few days at the max.
( )Muhammad Adnan July 28th
ok thanks,
Jeff , i want to ask you , the component i am developing . if someone other submitted before than me , will my component still be accepted ?
Jeffrey Way July 28th
It really depends on how unique your component is.
Bill Labus July 28th
I take it we can only enter submissions that were uploaded today or later (like we can’t use an existing item of ours on the marketplace for the competition)?
( )Skellie July 28th
That’s correct – you would need to add a new item to your profile.
( )Ronny-André Bendiksen July 28th
Just added my recently added PHP class: http://themeforest.net/item/easy-image-edit/50852
( )Yoosuf July 28th
Cool, but wish to have the 3Gs
( )Diego SA July 28th

( )Shafaat July 28th
Awesome!
( )will July 28th
someone do a simple php cms
like cushycms , i bet that would make you some cash a pick up a possible iphone
( )Skellie July 28th
To answer a few questions floating around:
1. There are no geographic restrictions to entry. Enter from Antarctica if you like!
2. We’ll give you a $200 Apple gift card to buy an iPhone – or whatever you want.
Good luck everyone!
( )Skellie July 28th
Also, just added a note to the post that PC only users who would not be able to use CSS Edit can request an extra 6 months free Plus membership in place of that prize.
( )Bill Labus July 28th
Wait a minute, are there separate judging categories for PHP and Javascript, or just 3 winners out of both languages? Because if that’s the case, doesn’t that kind of disadvantage the Javascript people, since by its nature PHP is a much more powerful language?
( )Jeffrey Way July 28th
I don’t think so at all. We’re choosing 3 winners total.
( )Arafat Rahman July 28th
Nice contest I think.
( )Really Cool
Sunil Agarwal July 28th
I’m not considered a regular author right? I only wrote 1 article for NetTuts so far.
( )Joe July 29th
You said to use formspring to submit entries, then showed a picture of posting in the comments, which do we use?
Also, can we submit multiple entries?
( )Adam July 29th
Join to Joe’s question. Can se submit multple entries?
And what do we need to submit in our comments?
Thanks.
( )jem July 29th
Javascript components can use frameworks i presume?
Will there be any discrimination as to what framework is used? It would be awfully sad to see some sweet works in Prototype, dojo, mootools, etc, and then they get shot down for something inferior because they aren’t a jquery plugin.
( )Jash Sayani July 29th
Hi Jeff,
What is the last submission date??
Because I’m a bit busy right now and need to know if I need to submit mine asap…
( )Abe July 30th
Entries will close at midnight, August the 14th (Pacific Standard Time)
( )David July 29th
If this is stated above please forgive me but, how will the winners be selected? What will the judges take into account? Usability? Performance? Quantity of code? Ease of use? Luck (selecting at random)?
( )Abhin July 30th
Hi Jeff
( )It is necessary that PHP/JS component should be compatible with IE 6 for the competition or We can mention the compatible browsers.
Sunil Agarwal August 2nd
When you submit an item to Themeforest, it asks you for all the browsers the code works in. You can list untested, works, or not works.
If you haven’t tested it in IE 6, just put untested. If it genuinely doesn’t work, put “doesn’t work”.
As for is it necessary to work for the competition, I have no clue.
( )Omar Abid July 31st

You zip upload isn’t working on the submission form (JS component) – anyone else having same problem?
I have contacted Envanto a week ago, but still no fix
( )Tommy M August 7th
I just added Clivo, version 2.1 – http://themeforest.net/item/clivo/49074
Looking forward to the results!!
( )Felicity August 11th
Ok, so the zip upload is now a documented problem. Seems a little unfair as the closing date is looming, that a bug should prevent people from being able to enter.
I tried to submit my component about 2 weeks ago.
( )makfak August 12th
I have added a jQuery plugin: siteFeature.
http://themeforest.net/item/sitefeature/53896
Enjoy
( )makfak August 12th
I have added tweetGrab: a jQuery Plugin (standalone) and a jQuery-ed Wordpress Plugin.

Enjoy

I spent all day and night releasing the next version of Clivo (version 2.5) so it would be able to compete in the contest! Looking forward to the winners being announced!
