Free Mac Utility App: Structurer

At the end of 2010, we released an exclusive Mac utility app, called Structurer. This app allows you to rapidly create file/folder structures for your new projects. Less than a month later, the developer, Cesar Tessarin, is back with a much improved version which now provides support for template creation, as well as assigning custom content automatically to newly created files. It’s fantastic, and, even better, 100% free to all of our readers!

Overview of Structurer

Though this is quite a simple utility app, it can be incredibly useful. We hope you enjoy it! After using, be sure to let us know, via the comments, what features you would like to see added! A huge thank you goes out to Cesar Tessarin for building this app for our Mac readers.

Is there anything like this wonderful app available for windows or linux?

  4. Sean Delaney says:

First of all what a great little App! I can’t believe I’ve not found this until now.

I have one problem to report though. In the Content Manager, I’ve setup a WordPress File Content group. I noticed that WordPress or any ZIP file doesn’t actually download.

I’m trying to download WordPress from this URL: http://wordpress.org/latest.zip – the same URL used the demo’s. I’ve watched the demo’s over and over again to make sure I’m doing everything correctly but it still isn’t working.

Can you confirm that downloading and extracting ZIP files work?

  5. Joshua Robison says:

NOWHERE, did I see that this app was for intel mac only.
Could you at least post the system requirements before we waist time, hopes and expectations.
Was it necessary to make this intel only. At least post the requirements, please.

  6. Kuzeko says:

    Loving it!!

In “Files content manager” , when you click “delete” would be nice to have a message box asking you if you are aware of what you’re doing.

Could be nice to have an “Export” function, to share you “assets”

  7. Codedninja says:

Thank you for this need program. I liked it so much I bought me a mac for first time to use the program. :)

  8. gpop says:

any chance of seeing this on the app store? so we can get notified for updates.

  9. DaftViking says:

Still no love for 10.5, I see. As others have mentioned, it would be helpful to have some mention of system requirements (10.6, I assume, and judging by the other comments, Intel-only).

  10. This is looking sweet. Grabbing CI and WP like this is great, lovely work Cesar.

  11. Gaurav Narula says:

@Jeffrey: Mailed you a Windows Version I made in C# :) Hope that would help many users here. Lacks templating as of now but I’m working on it too.

    • malaiko says:

Can you mail me your windows version please?

      • Gaurav Narula says:

@malaiko: You might want to wait for a few days, I nearly have the Content Management thing done (doesn’t get things from URL but pasted data is stored in an xml file just fine).

@Jeffrey: Will you add the Windows version to the post after its stable? The one I sent you one shouldn’t have any issues since it just creates the structures but the current build needs thorough testing :P

And to sparkle everyone’s eyes, here’s a preview:

Cesar really needs to be the one to okay a Windows app. What do you think Cesar?

      • EmpreJorge says:

I would loooove to see a windows version :D

      • Madrukus says:

Any updates on the windows version?

    • Cory says:

I also started on a Windows version in C# today.

      • Gaurav Narula says:

@Cory: Looks great! btw, I read Caesar’s comments in the previous page. We might have to change the name of the application (don’t know whether his views regarding it has changed since but still to be on a safer side). Also, why not club our sources? Lets build it robust together.

Also, sharing content and templates will be possible in my release (a click of mouse and CTRL+C would do it :P )

      • Cory says:

@Gaurav Narula Yeah combining sources sounds good, I may just th

      • Cory says:

        @Gaurav Narula I hate trackpad’s sometimes.

But as I was saying joining sources sounds good, I was thinking of just throwing this up on Github or something similar and from there we could start throwing things together from each app.

Also thinking up a new name, (The most difficult part of any project).

I also have all my content and template laid out in plain text, however instead of XML mine is laid
        out like so.

        TemplateType – 1 Line
        TemplateName – 1 Line
        Shortcut(Incase of ContentTemplate) – 1 Line
Content/Structure – The rest of the file

You can email me at cborrow03 [at] gmail [dot] com if you want to contact me about the getting together to build something awesome.

  14. Guys you’re simply amazing!

    Thanks for all this!

  15. Javier Ayala says:

Jeffrey.. I loved your update.. your app is getting cooler and cooler.. I’m pretty sure you can manage to do it even better and push it to the Mac appstore.. great app!

  16. Marko Jozic says:

Exporting Themes & Content would be awesome.
    btw.: is there a Windows-Version?

  17. [rb] says:

All I ever get is an error – The file “filname” couldn’t be saved in the folder “foldername”

  18. Stephan says:

Hey Guys,Yes i have deleted my Adobe Air Version of Structurer because it was also called Structurer. I don’t have the right to use that name. So i will give it another ;).
I also want to implement all the new features in the new version of my air app.

I will post the link to the download here when it’s done.

    Sorry for my bad englisch

  19. Rob Kritzer says:

Downloaded last night, but he version number in about still says 1.2 is that correct?

    • Cesar Tessarin says:

      Rob,

Is the about box the only place that says 1.2? It should be 1.3 . If you select the app in Finder and give a “Get Info” (⌘I), what’s the version number displayed?

      • Rob Kritzer says:

        Cesar,

It looks like the only place I seen the 1.2 was in the about, if I do a get info on the program it says 1.3. I was a little confused, just wanted to make sure I had the correct version. Looks like I am good to go.

        Thanks

  20. Cesar Tessarin says:

    Hello Everyone,

I’ve been discussing with Jeffrey two of the most commented topics: a Windows utility and pushing Structurer to the Mac App Store. Soon we’ll probably have some announcements to do.

    Best wishes

  21. Good for Mac .. Jeffry your voice very nice like SJ

  22. Duncan says:

Wow! That’s a brilliant tool, looking forward to using it, a lot.

  23. sarmen says:

i have a suggestion for a future update
if you can allow the ability to put in content into files created for example stylesheet data, php classes etc.

  24. Joshua says:

How the hell do you do nested folders.
When i start out with a client, I create a projects folder with 12months in that folder.
    How is this done?

  25. Dorset says:

Thank you so much i have been looking for a free app that helps with structure. I like to have everything in its place

  26. Jeffry: Thanks for a great little tool that appeals to my Virgo nature!

  27. David Fitzgibbon says:

This is simply great. Thank you very much for all the work that you guys have put into this wonderful tool!

  28. chris says:

I’m perplexed on how to create folders, subfolders and folders that site side by side in the same directory
    for example

    one/
    /a/
    /b/
    /c/
    two/
    three/

does not output a tree that is
    /one
    /one/a
    /one/b
    /one/c
    /two
    /three

  29. Ty Colwell says:

I had to leave a comment for such a great little utility. Very simple in form, yet extremely effective in execution. Touche and thank you for the free app. <3

  30. Nik says:

I love love love your content, especially tuts+ but please consider providing alternative text to video explanations! Especially when you release software and the only way to find out about features/how it works is to watch AND listen to a video :\

Not everyone takes in video media the best and while it allows the creators more freedoms, it can be limiting to ingest and take away from at times.

but keep up the awesome stuff! structurer sounds like a great tool.

  31. this is fantastic. thank you!

  32. Burak Erdem says:

    This is such a great app, thanks. I have a little problem with the folder structure. I use the following structure;

    :ci
    public/:boiler
    public/js/libs/jquery.js:jq
    public/css/:960

I’m trying to extract latest jQuery in /public/js/jquery.js and 960 Grid system in /public/css/ but it deletes all files in /public/css and /public/js and then extracts both jQuery and 960 Grid. I really don’t know why Structurer deletes previously extracted files. I hope there exists a solution for that.

  33. The-Di-Lab says:

    Hi

    Windows developer here.

So I am using batch file to do the same thing.

  34. peter says:

Hello I am using the Folderizer on Win7 64bit but I am experiencing some problems when I am trying to download joomla.

I am using the url http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/14659/64120/Joomla_1.6.3-Stable-Full_Package.zip with the shortcode joomla
Is there a solution for this?

  35. Venkatesh says:

It’s very good article. I just found the article for more mac apps in http://www.mebaze.com.

  36. tarek says:

    thanks this is great tool

  37. Joe says:

Just want to thank you for making my work that little bit easier once again! Excellent work, love the auto unzips from wordpress etc.

  38. Mike says:

I’m feeling a bit ‘blue’ at the moment. The Windows (XP for me) version of this tool called Blueprinter was recently announced and I eagerly paid for and downloaded it. Unfortunately the Content Manager feature – the main reason I bought it – doesn’t appear to work. Has anyone else tried it and does it work for you?

    • Jon says:

I had the exact same issue. The folder structure works like a charm, but the files are always empty, regardless or whether I use the file extension or :shortcut method. Tried in both Vista & Win7.

  39. Rob says:

I’ve been using Structurer for a while now, but am I the only one that can’t create a ‘.htaccess’ file with it? It works great for me getting a fresh installation of CodeIgniter and stuff like that, but it just won’t create a ‘.htaccess’ file for me…

  40. Kim Korte says:

The idea of this whole concept is just awesome. Tho I miss the possibility to be able to fetch content using revision handlers like Mercurial. Wouldn’t it be cool if you (just like URL-fetching) could put in “hg clone ssh://hg@….blablabla…/corefiles” and shortcut it “corefiles” and by that be able to fetch all content in “corefiles” at the same time as you are initializing Mercurial to that directory in that project?

  41. Kricir says:

Can anyone tell me something, I followed along with the tutorial and created the structure of the file system which is great, and then started creating templates to initially start off the files to fit the CMS I use (concrete5) which runs on php files.

The app worked perfectly for the .css file, the .js files (including downloading the latest copy and writing my own file), and writing the .html files.

However what it didn’t write to was my PHP files, it does do this feature right?

  42. Roj says:

I was wondering if this works with subversion aswell?

  43. pierlo says:

It would really ROCK if there was a way to pass variables to the filenames and even inside the file contents.
For example, say you wanted to create something like:

    /models/MODEL_NAME.php:base_model

with the content of base_model being

    MODEL_NAME extends Base_model {
    (…)
    }

That would be so freakingly awesome!!!

  44. Martin says:

    Awesome piece of software.

I really like the contents manager feature!

Thanks for the awesome (free) software!

    M.

  45. hatim says:

is there a source code for that… thx in advance

  46. blai says:

where are the templates saved on Mac? I want to share the template for my team
