2 New Premium Tutorials: Refinery and Modernizr

Tutorial Details

This week, we have two excellent new Net Premium tutorials for our members. First, Glenn Goodrich will teach you how to work with Refinery – a Rails CMS. Next, I’ll teach you how to detect CSS3 and HTML5 support in browsers, by using the wonderful Modernizr library. Help give back to Nettuts+ by signing up for a Premium membership.

A Video Crash-Course in Modernizr

It’s a common misconception that the JavaScript library, Modernizr, miraculously upgrades all browsers to allow for HTML5 and CSS3 support. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. However, instead, it detects support, which provides us with a lot of power! I’ll show you how to get started today!

No longer available: Getting Started with Refinery: A Rails CMS

From time to time we run an audit of Tuts+ Premium tutorials to make sure they are still as relevant and useful today as the time when they were publish. Unfortunately, this tutorial has dated to the point where it is no longer useful for members. For this reason, we have removed it from the Tuts+ Premium library. If you are looking for more Rails learning, rest assured we have a number of high quality tutorials available for you!

Ooh, I don’t work in .NET, but these look cool.

Woops, I, as usual, read it wrong.

These look cool anyways, and I can use em, when I subscribe.

    No more MAC Jeffrey?

I use both. This one required the use of Internet Explorer, so I just opted for the PC.

Ai, it was so logical ;) sorry..

As a developer for years on a windows system, what would you say, did it take a lot of time to change to mac and how about the workflow speed, same, slower or faster on mac?

I consider a change, because the tools on mac seems to be much better for php/mysql

    why premium ?

What do you mean “why premium?”

Do you mean why is it a premium tutorial?

    Yippee!

I actually got the Refinery CMS up and running on my WinXP laptop with this tutorial. Ha!

That’s no small feat considering how much I detest using the console to install and update RoR files (or are they called gems? … I can never get that straight) and that whole dependency thing gives me a rash.

But I must say, I covet RoR apps so I’m forcing myself to overcome my aversion to console commands. Maybe I should play Zork for a few days?

One thing I’d point out about the last step in the Refinery CMS tutorial is that when starting the server, I have to type “ruby script/server” and not just “script/server” to get it to start.

    Thanks for this :)

Nice tutorial. I have refinery installed on my ubuntu system but when browsing the directory structure I noticed that there is no vendor directory. Did I do something wrong? I have been searching all over to find an answer with no luck.

Refinery is the most powerful CMS application that I have ever used for rails, so far. I wish that the project wasn’t a gem to make the source easier to view and edit, but still sooo powerful!
