Quick Tip: Top 5 Awesome Features in Transmit 4

The ever-amazing Mac software company, Panic, has released the fourth version of their incredible FTP client Transmit last week. What’s packed into this version? Well, according to the release notes, “Everything is new!”

5. Brand New Interface

The biggest changes in Transmit 4 are in the interface; you almost don’t recognize it as the same software!

4. Super User-Friendly

A lot of Transmit 4’s awesomeness is in its incredibly ease-of-use. For example, when viewing a folder (both local and remote) you’ve got a “bread-crumb” trail to make navigating between folders a breeze. Then, the sync panel now gives you a nice tooltip, making it easier to see exactly what will happen.

3. Rules

The preferences panel in Transmit 4 now includes a rules panel; this makes it really easy to skip certain files, like source control files.

2. Local to Local / Server to Server

With Transmit 4, either panel can be either a server or a local folder, making it super-simple to transfer files between folders.

1. Mounting Disks

The “one more thing” about Transmit 4 is that you mount servers as disks, just like you’d mount a local hard drive.

    I love the new Transmit. One of my favorite new features is Mount as Disk. It makes dropping files into my images folder much quicker for development.

    I hope Panic carries over some of these features into a new version of Coda!!

      Windows 7 has that function out of the box and so does Ubuntu… It just works anyone?

        The Mac’s had it since OS X came out too (2002) ;) Its just not been functional for FTP until recently. Anyone serious about network storage is going to be using a more standard network filesystem protocol (which Windows only supports as of 2009).

      Actually, OSX can do this natively as well, and has since the first OSX… But like windows and other *nix versions (osx implementation is essentially a network mount, same as any other *nix core) it doesn’t have any bells and whistles…

      With transmit… your upload rules apply, etc… its just ‘nicer’

    I’ve been trying to figure out what the big deal is about Transmit 4, most or all of these features have existed in other FTP apps for awhile, namely Forklift it only seems Panic was catching up to this app in the newest release.

    Been using Forklift as my file manager/ftp client since it’s early days. I highly recommend it. The new transmit interface is very very similar to that of Forklift.

    Well…seeing as not everyone live sin a Mac world for web design I prefer Filezilla. It’s worked great for me for years and you can beat the cost (free!)

    I’ve clung to FileZilla for a lot of work because of some of the features I felt were not as optimal in Transmit, but this seals the deal. My only other concern, though, is that I can’t import my FileZilla settings into Transmit. Any suggestions? (Or is this also a new feature?)

    It seems that the uploading was slow, especially while showing us server to server. As above poster said, you can’t go wrong with Filezilla

      That’s probably my servers; according to Panic’s charts, T4 can be up to 25x faster than T3.

      And about FileZilla – you’re right: it’s great; and that’s all I use on Windows.

    If you were a big fan of the sidebar in Transmit 3, you’ll be disappointed to find that it’s now gone and you’ll have to put your folder shortcuts in the nearly unusable ‘Places’ feature.

      Yikes! That was one of my favorite features! I find it hard to believe that they castrated something so obviously useful.

      Hopefully they will fix this. I know there are lots of people missing the feature. Personally I think the new solution is nice but need improvements like list view etc.

    Is the mounted disk only available for Transmit or can it be used with other tools, like TextMate too ?

    I mean is it possible to mount my webhost server with Transmit and then access it via TextMate?

      You can, but I found it a bit slow; but that might have been the server.

        I guess it was not your server because i just tried it out and it is really a bit slow. I can see coming timeouts while saving files, annoying.

    For those that don’t use FTP a lot and don’t wanna pay for it, there’s always the good alternative CyberDuck. It’s great and free!

    Transmit already had Rules, that’s nothing new, it just used to be part of the sync thats all, shouldn’t really be on the list.

    Don’t see why people pay money for this. There are too many free or integrated FTP loaders. I guess if you are not spending your money. :)

    I actually use CyberDuck to manage my websites but i think i will buy the licence of Transmit 4 soon. I hear many people which says that it’s the best FTP client for Mac.

    Love this new update. For those who can’t understand why someone would pay for FTP client… are you using GIMP and also wonder why others would pay for Photoshop? Free alternatives can sure do many of the same things… but user experience from polished interfaces and stable software is sometimes worth the cost. I have had Cyberduck for instance…. interface was very lacking and was flaky… often crashing. I use FireFTP at work. Works, but interface is not the most effective design and rare occasion has a flaky moment. Been using Transmit for couple of years and always been solid app worth the expense.

    Not having used Transmit before it’s interesting to see what it’s capable of. Like a lot of web designers I usually use just the in-built Dreamweaver interface, but as shown here there are a lot more options for FTP clients.

    I think they key feature here is being able to mount the server as a hard drive. This provides an easy link and ability to use the server as if it was mounted inside your computer, and I can instantly see the advantages of this.

    I’d like to see what other FTP options are available. After reading this I’ll look into Transmit further, as this could be useful for downloading sites whilst simultaneously working on another site within Dreamweaver.

    I just downloaded Transmit, but I’m having trouble mounting the drive on my desktop. It shows up in the icon bar at the top, and within finder itself, but I can’t seem to mount it appearing as a drive on the desktop itself. Any advice?
